1 Claim. (Cl. 148-123) This invention relates to wire forming pliers and more particularly to a pair of pliers provided with a jaw structure whereby the free end of a wire may be bent to a U shape.
It is the object of the present invention to provide a simple wire bending tool for forming the free end of a wire to facilitate its attachment to a terminal or other device.
In accordance with one embodiment of the invention, a pair of wire forming pliers comprises two jaws one of which has a bending projection formed on it and the other of which has a wire receiving groove and a die slot formed in it for cooperation with the bending projection on the first mentioned jaw to bend the free end of a wire placed in the groove in the second mentioned aw.
A better understanding of the invention may be had by reference to the drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of a pair of pliers of the type where the jaws themselves travel in a straight line toward each other upon actuation, showing a length of wire having its end bent in solid lines and a length of wire placed in the groove prior to bending it in dot and dash lines;
Fig. 2 is a top view of the pliers shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is an enlar ed sectional view taken longitudinally through the jaws of the pliers shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary plan view looking upwardly at the lower jaw; and
Fig. 5 is a view of the usual pivotal type long nose pliers with the jaws thereof modified in accordance with the present invention and constitutes a showing of another embodiment of the invention.
Referring now to the drawings particular reference being made to Fig. 1 wherein there is shown what are known as parallel jaw pliers 11) which comprise a pair of cooperating handles 11 and 12 having pins 13 and 14 for entering slots 15 and 16 in a pair of jaws 17 and 18. The handles 11 and 12 are pivoted on a pin 19 and jaw 17 is pivotally mounted on handle 12 by means of a pin 20 whereas jaw 18 is pivotally mounted on the handle 11 by means of a pin 21. The jaws 17 and 18 are normally held in the position, shown in Fig. 1, by a contractile spring 22 connected to the handle 12 and the jaw 18 and serving to pull the jaw 18 to a position where the pin 14 will rest in the inner end of the slot 16 thus to draw the pins 14 and 21 toward each other, rocking the handles about the pivot pin 19 and holding the jaws open.
The upper jaw 17 has a slightly tapered slot 25 formed in it which extends a short distance from the free end of the jaw inwardly and is adapted to receive an intermediate portion of wire 26 which has been bent in the 2,828,780 Patented Apr. 1, 1958 pliers. The upper jaw has a forming projection or punch 27 formed on it which extends as shown in Fig. 3 downwardly an appreciable distance beyond the normal working face of jaw 17. The forward side of this projection which is closest the free end of jaw 17 is aligned with the inner end of the slot 25. The upper jaw 17 also has a notch 28 formed in it for receiving an aligning abutment or wire stop 29 formed on the lower jaw 18 when the jaws are closed. The stop 29 limits the length of wire inserted within the jaws to the amount required to obtain the wire bend desired. The lower jaw 13 also has a wire receiving groove 30 formed in it which terminates at the front face of the abutment 29.
Formed in the lower jaw 18 is a die slot 31 which is of a length slightly more than twice the diameter of the wire to be bent plus the width of the forming projection 27 and which has its edges rounded as clearly shown at 32 and 33 (Fig. 3) so that as the forming projection 27 forces a wire down into the die slot 31, the free end of the wire 26 will be bent as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. This die slot 31 is positioned inwardly from the free end of the jaw 18 and intermediate the ends of the whereceiving slot 30.
The construction of the free ends of the jaws 37 and 38 of the pliers as disclosed in Fig. 5 is the same as the construction of the jaws 17 and 18 shown in the other figures.- However, in the construction shown in Fig. 5, jaw 37 is formed integrally with handle 39 and jaw 38 is formed integrally with handle 41), the jaws and handles being pivoted at 41 as is usual in what are known as long nose pliers.
It will be understood that the embodiments described herein are merely illustrative of the invention and that modifications thereof may be made without departing from the scope of the invention.
What is claimed is:
A wire forming pliers comprising a first jaw, a second jaw for cooperation with said first jaw, a bending projection on said first jaw, said projection having a rounded end for engagement with a wire to be bent, a wire receiving groove extending longitudinally from the free end of said second jaw, an abutment at the inner end of said wire receiving groove to serve as a gauge against which the free end of a wire to be formed may be placed, a die slot formed in said second jaw and extending normal to said groove, said die slot being positioned intermediate the ends of the groove and having front and rear edges rounded to serve as forming surfaces against which a wire to be formed will be pressed by the rounded end of the bending projection of said first jaw, and a tapered slot in the free end of said first jaw having its inner end in alignment with the outer end of the bending projection to receive a portion of the wire adjacent to the portion thereof being bent.
