This invention relates to newanduseful improvements inpipe wrenches and aims Ato provide a wrench equipped with a sliding jaw that may be adj usted in a rapid and easy manner and by the employment of but one hand and while the wrench is in position upon the work. Furthermore, the invention aims to provide rapid and positive means for locking the sliding jaw in adjusted position and thisV merely by releasing the sliding jaw carrier that is equipped at its lower end with a finger piece that extends alongside of the handle of the wrench and that may be engaged by the fingers ofl the hand holding the handle so that the loc-king and adjusting operation may be performed `directly atthe work.
The invention further aims to provide a pipe wrench of this character that is of relatively simple construction and inexpensive of manufacture, the same embodying few parts, and these so corelated as to reduce the possibility of disarrangement to a minimum.
In the drawing wherein like reference characters indicate corresponding` parts of the same throughout the several views:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved pipe wrench.
Figure 2 is a view partially in longitudinal section and partially in elevation.
Figures 3 and 4 are detail horizontal sec` tions taken substantiallly on the line 33 and 4 4, respectively, of igure 1 and looking in the direction of the arrows, and
Figure 5 is a fragmentary longitudinal section taken through the upper end of the sliding jaw carrier for more clearly disclosing the manner of association of the rigid jaw with said carrier, which rigid jaw also affects a locking means for the sliding jaw.
Now having particular reference to the drawing my novel pipe wrench consists of a handle 5 of suitable length that is formed at its upper end with an inwardly curved nose portion 6, the inner end of which is of rounded contour and provided with spaced teeth 7 Said upper end of said handle 5 is arran ed within a sliding and rigid jaw carrier 8 t at comprises a pair of spaced and somewhat elongated side walls 9-9, which side walls are of greater width at the upper end of the carrier and integrally joined by a wall 1() serving to provide a guide sleeve 11 through which is slidably arranged the shank 12 of a sliding jaw 13. This jaw shank 12 is provided at one face with an elongated channel- 14 terminating within the ends `0 the shank and within which" is arraned a pin carrying set screw 15 threaded witliin an opening in one side wall of the carrier 8 at the portion thereof comprising the side wall of vsaid sleeve 11, see Figure 1. f 3
The upper edges of the side walls9-9 of said carrier 8 beneath the sliding jaw 13am inclined downwardly and bent inwardly to provide flanges 99. Arranged uponthe upper edges of said carrier side walls is a com` directly beneathfthe bottom` surface of the jaw 16 with slots for receiving the flanges 9-9 of' said carrier walls 9 9, see Fi ure `5.
This character of connection between t e sta` tionary jaw and the carrier will permit the Jaw to be slid outwardly or inwardly with respect to the shank 12 ofthe sliding jaw 13. Furthermore, the inner end of the ]aw 16 is pointed to provide a locking tongue19 adapt ed for engagement between teeth 20 formed upon the inner edge of the shank 12 of said sliding jaw 13.
At the inner nosed end of the lever 5 there is formed an oblong opening 21 that is arranged on an an le to the handle substantially equivalent to t e angle of the inwardly bent end of the handle 5 that provides said nose 6, while arranged through this hole is a pivot pin'22 afiixed at its ends to the side walls9-9 of the carrier 8. Adjacent the lower edges of the side walls 9-9 of said carrier are registering arcuate shaped openings 23-23, these openings extending at an angle to the handle reverse to the angularity of the opening 21 in the nosed end of said handle 5. The handle 5 directly adjacent its inner edge carries a pin 24, the ends of which have sliding engagement through said registering openings 23-23.
Directly inwardly of the inner edge of the sliding jaw shank 12 the lower end of the carrier 8 is formed with a1 depending and somewhat outwardly curved finger lever 25, between which and the handle 6 is an expansible coil spring 26 that serves to normally swing the carrier into the position disclosed in Figures 1 and2, in which position the teeth 7 of the lever nose 6 will have `engagement with the teeth 2O of the sliding jaw shank 12. However, a pull upon the linger lever E25 will cause the nose 6` of the lever 5 to move away from the shank 12 of the jaw 13 and thereby be released therefrom. In order to release the inner pointed end ot the stationary jaw 16 from the shank 12 oll said sliding jaw 13 the upper end of the lever 5 directly in back f the teeth 7 is provided with a lug 27 for 'engagement between the lugs 18-18 of said jaw 16, the space between sai d lu gs 18-18 being greater than the width of the lug" 27 so that the saine may have a slight movement therebetween without causing the sliding movement of the aw 1G in reverse direction. Obviously as the linger lever 25 is drawn inwardly so that the teeth 7 ot the handle will be withdrawn lfrom the teeth ot' the sliding aw shank, the lngl 27 ot the handle will engage the outermost lugl 18 ot the aw 16 and slide the same away from the shank of the stationary jaw so that said stationary jaw may be moved inwardly or outwardly. A. release of the linger lever will immediately7 cause the return of the carrier which will force the inner end of the lever to the position disclosed and then when a pull is directed toward the right, is made upon the handle the teeth 7 off the nose olf' the handle having mesh with the teeth of the sliding jaw shank will tend to pull the jaw inwardly so that t-he saine will firmly bind the work between the jaws 13 and 16.
It will thus be seen that I have provided a highly novel, simple, and extremely efficient pipe wrench that is Well adapted for all the purposes heretofore designated, even though I have herein shown and described the invention as consisting of certain detail structural elements it is nevertheless to be understood that some changes may be made therein without ailecting the spirit and scope of the ap pended claim.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let" ters Patent is In a wrench of the character described comprising a handle having a laterally disposed end portion, said end portion being provided with rack teeth, a projection on said end of the handle, a carrier pivoted to the said end portion of the handle through a slot therein, a jaw structure on said carrier, a pair of inwardly disposed and spaced protuberances on said aw structure, a slide aw provided with a shank having rack teeth, the teeth of the handle being engageable with the teeth o'f the shank for moving the slide jaw, the slotted end portion of the handle being' adapted to be moved inwardly on the pivot and swung in a direction to cause the pressing of the projection against one of the protuberances and causing' a binding action of the carrier jaw with the rack teeth of the shank.
