SNAP-HOOK.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 318,545, dated May 26,1885.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, .TAMEs O. COVERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at the village of -West Troy, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Snap-Hooks, of which the following is a specification.

This invention consists in the construction of a snap-hook with the usual rear end ring or loop expanded trausversely,so as to form more properly a sleeve having convexinterior surfaces and flaring upturned edges, and considerably resembling a saddle externally, my object being to adapt snap-hooks more perfectly for special use upon ropes or chains, in whichitis desirable the same should slide freely thereon without the liability of pinching, binding, or cutting through, all as hereinafter more fully described.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved device with a rope inserted through sleeve, and Fig. 2 is a modification of same.

Similar letters of reference in each indicate corresponding parts.

A represents the snap-hook, which may be of any suitable construction, my preference, however, being the improved. form shown in Fig. l of the drawings, the same being previously patented and manufactured by me, and known as the Covert Snap-Hook.

By B is represented the saddle-shaped sleeve or rear end loop, extending from the shank or body 0 of snap-hook, and having the convex interior aforesaid and the flaring upturned edges or lips I) b, so that the orifice is much larger at said outer edges than in the central portion of sleeve, the sides of same being narrowest at its intersection with snapbody, and gradually expanding transversely toward the top, so as represent a broad bearing-surface for the rope or chain that may be inserted therein.

The operation of deviceis as follows: Vhen suspended from a rope or chain, and more especially when hung in the center of a short length secured at either end, or in the bight of a rope, as usual in rigging of vessels, the convex interior and flaring edges of sleeve will admit of the same sliding readily to and fro, and of considerable oscillation or swaying from side to side upon such rope or chain as subjected to tension in either direction, the formation of said edges preventing their contact therewith, and consequently the pinching, binding, or cutting through liable with snaphooks having the ordinary end loop.

As shown in Fig. 2, the device may be modified so that, if found desirable, the same may be secured at any particular point along said rope or chain by forming a projection or boss on the upper surface of sleeve having a suitably-threaded orifice, and provided with a correspondingly threaded set screw, which feature, however, is not essential, but may be dispensed with and not affect the general operation of my invention.
