V Urrrrnn STATES v PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH G. ONEILD, OF NEVADA CITY, CALIFORNIA.
WINDOW-SHELF.
. SPECEFECATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 318,200, dated May 19, 1885.
Application filed October 24, 1884.
To all whom it may concern.-
Nevada City, in the county of Nevada and State of California, have invented a new and Improved Window-Shelf,of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved window-shelf which can easily be adjusted on the inside or outside of the window and in different positions.
The invention consists in a flower-shelf provided with hinged brackets and latches for locking the bracket in place on the shelf parallel with the ends of the same. Apertured lugs are secured on the standards of the window-frame, and into the said lugs pins are passed which project from the inner ends of the brackets.
Referenceis to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is an inside elevation of a window provided with my improved shelf. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view of the frame, the shelf being on the outside of the window. Fig. 3 is a like view, the shelf being diagonal in the opening. Fig. 4 is a like View showing the shelf held on the inside.
On the inner side of each upright A of the window-frame three horizontally-projecting lugs, B, are secured, each of which is provided with an aperture, a. The lugs on the two standards are arranged at like elevations.
To the under side of a flower-shelf, O, a bracket, D, is pivoted at each end on the longitudinal central line, which brackets are each provided with downwardly-projecting pins or studs d at the inner ends of the top pieces, D, and the inner lower ends of the braces D A stud, F, projects from each side edge of the shelf at each end. Latches G, adapted to lock the pivoted brackets D in place on the shelf, are pivoted to opposite side edges at opposite ends. A bail or brace-frame, J, having hooks at the ends, is adapted to be hooked on two corresponding studs, F, and is supported by a hook-lever, K, held near its hook end on the bail, and passed into a top bracket, thus supporting the shelf.
(Model) three lugs, B, are secured in the same manner Be it known that I, J OSEPH G. ONEILL, of
as 011 the inside.
WVhen the brackets D are parallel with the ends of the shelf 0, they can be locked in place by means of the latches G.
The pins (1 of one bracket D are passed into the apertures of two corresponding lugs, B, on one post, and the free end of the shelf can be supported from the top lug B by means of the frame J and the lever K; or the shelf can be supported on the inside by two brackets.
If the shelf is to beheld at an inclination in the window, one bracket D is held on the outer lug B of one standard, and the other on the inner lugs B of the opposite standard.
If the shelf is to be swung out of the window, the right-hand bracket is hung on the right-hand standard A, the left-hand end of the shelf is swung out of the window and hung on the outside lugs, and then the righthand end of the shelf is swung out of the window, and can be supported by the frame or bail J, or in any other suitable manner.
WVhen the shelf is on the outside, one end is supported, but the outside lugs B and the free end is supported by the bail J and le ver K.
When the shelf is on the inside, one end is supported by the inner lugs B, and the other end by the bail J and lever K.
The free end of the shelf can easily be raised to prevent swinging the bracket by means of the lever K,which, if swung upward, slightly raises the shelf.
The shelf can easily be swung in or out with all the flowers, &c., on it.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters I Patent, is-
1. The combination, with the shelf 0, of the brackets D, the bail J, the hook-lever K, and the lugs B on the standards of the win- (low-frame, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination, with a windowshelflof a bracket pivoted centrally on the bottom of thesame at each end, and supports for said brackets, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. The combination, with a window-shelf,
ICO
of a bracket pivoted to the under side of the d, and 0f the apertured lugs B on the window same at each end, and of latches for holding frame, substantially as herein shown and dethe brackets parallel with the ends of the scribed.
shelf, and supports for said brackets, substan- JOSEPH G. ONEIL'L. 5 tially as herein shown and described. Witnesses:
4. The combination,with the shelf 0, of the n. H. GAYLORD, J brackets D, pivoted thereto, and having pins J. M. VVALLING.
