April 27, 1965 D. Osage St, Sedalia, Mo. Filed .iuly 5, 1963, Ser. No. 293,595 2 Gain 1s. (Cl. 17181} This invention relates to the correction of typing errors and has as its object the provision of a device which may be quickly and easily attached to and detached from the paper-hold-down bar of a typewriter and which is adapted to hold a piece of conventional typewriter correction tape.
This and other objects and advantages of my invention will more fully appear from the following description and from the drawing in which:
FIGURE 1 is a view showing the device of my invention mounted on the paper-hold-down' bar of a typewriter and in a position to correct a typing error.
FIGURE 2 is a view showing the device of my invention mounted on the paper-hold-down bar of a typewriter and in a raised position to which it can be moved when not in use and in which it does not interfere with the normal operation of the typewriter.
The device of my invention, as shown in FIGURES 1 and 2, is adapted to be mounted on the paper-hold-down bar 2 of a conventional typewriter. It is made of a flexible plastic material and consists of a substantially cylindrical lmuckle portion 1 which has a slit and a bore (FIG. 2) extending its entire length. The slit is parallel to the axis of the bore and enables the flexible lips of the knuckle 1 to resiliently spread so that the device may be easily attached to or removed from the paperhold-down bar 2 of a typewriter. T he bore is so dimensioned that when the device is attached to the typewriter the knuckle 1 will frictionally grip the paper-hold-down bar 2 so that the device, when moved to its FIGURE 2 position or slipped along the bar 2, will remain in the position in which it is placed. Extending from the knuckle 1 in a direction perpendicular to the axis of the bore is an integral curved tapered arm having an integral enlarged rectangular end 6 with a rectangular opening therein. The curved arm is of such a length that the rectangular opening 5 may be placed between the ribbon 7 of the typewriter and the paper 3 upon which the correction is to be made. The paper 3 is supported by the platen 4 of the typewriter. The correction tape is placed over the rectangular opening 5 and can be held in place by adhesive means such as Scotch tape so that when one square of correction tape becomes unusable, it may easily be replaced by another.
In use, the device of the invention is attached to the paper-hold-down bar of the typewriter and a piece of correction tape is secured over opening 5. The device is then raised to the FIGURE 2 position until needed. When an error has occurred, the device is slid along 3,l@, l?4 i atentedi Apr. 2?, 1 2
the bar 2 to the position of the error and lowered and the carriage is then moved to its FIGURE 1 position wherein the error is at the printing position of the typewriter and the device is between the ribbon 7 and the paper 3. The letter constituting the error is then repeated causing the typewriter correction tape to oblitcrate the error leaving a blank space in which the proper letter may be typed. When the error has been obliterated, the device is moved to its FIGURE 2 position where it remains until needed again.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. An attachment device to be used with typewriters for holding typewriter correction tape to obliterate errors comprising, a substantially cylindrical knuckle por tion having an axial cylindrical bore and a slit extending the entire length thereof, said slit being parallel to the axis of said bore whereby said device can be mounted on the paper-hold-down bar of a typewriter; an integral tapered curved arm extending from said knuckle portion in a direction perpendicular to the axis of said bore, said curved arm having an integral enlarged rectangular portion at the end opposite said knuckle, said rectangular portion having a rectangular opening therein adapted to receive a piece of typewriter correction tape, said curved arm being of such a length that said rectangular opening can be placed at the printing point of a typewriter when said knuckle portion is mounted on the paper-hold-down bar of a typewriter, said attachment device being constructed of a flexible resilient plastic.
2. An attachment device to be used with typewriters for holding type writer correction tape to obliterate errors comprising, a substantially cylindrical knuckle portion having an axial cylindrical bore and a slit extending the entire length thereof, said slit being parallel to the axis of said bore whereby said device can be mounted on the paper-hold-down bar of a typewriter; a tapered curved arm extending from said knuckle portion in a direction perpendicular to the axis of said bore, said curved arm having an enlarged generally rectangular portion at the end opposite said knuckle, said rectangular portion having a generally rectangular opening therein adapted to receive a piece of typewriter correction tape, said curved arm being of such a length that said rectangular opening can be placed at the printing point of a typewriter when said knuckle portion is mounted on the paper-hold-down bar of a typewriter, said attachment device being constructed of a flexible resilient plastic.
