JESSE A. B. SMITH, or s'rAMFoRnooNNEcTIc-UT, assieitoa 'rojunminwooi) TYPE- WRITER COMPANY, or NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION or DE A E,
TYPEWBITING MACHINE.
Application filed December 9, 1921. Serial No. 521,089.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JEssn A. B. SMITH,
a' citizen of the United States, residing in Stamford, in the county of Faii'field and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Typewriting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to means for holding cards or labels on the platen of a typewriting machine to permit of iiiscriptions being printed thereon. More particularly, the invent-ion relates to a holder for this purpose, mounted sufliciently far toward one or the other end of the platen as to permit of a work-sheet being positioned on the platen alongside of the card or label in the holder.
In certain uses of a typewriting machine it is desirableto print inscriptions upon a card or label in conjunction with the print-- ing of matter on a work-sheet to which the matter inscribed upon the label has some relation. For example, a typewriting machine operator for a telephone company may be engaged in writing subscribers requisitions either upon separate worksheets, or upon individual forms detachable one after another'from a continuous web. At the same time that the requisition-sheets or form-blanks are filled in, it is desirable to have the subscribers" telephone-numbers written upon the tabs or cards which are to be attached to the mouth-pieces of the telephone-instruments. In order that such tabs, cards or labels may have the telephone numbers inscribed thereon, concurrently with the writing of the requisition-sheets, and more especially where the requisition sheets comprise detachable blanks forming a continuous web which it is inconvenient to remove, it is desirable to have the card or label holder so mounted that the cards or labels may be inserted into and removed from the same without disturbing the web or work-sheet at the'side thereof.
Card or label holders variously mounted oneither the main frame, carriage or platen are old in the art. Such holders, when not on the platen, have heretofore required a feed of the card or label, leading-end first, around the platen in line-space direction from the rear thereof, or, if permitting insertion of the card or label from the front of the machine, have ordinarily called for an insertion of the card or label, bottomend first, and'a subsequent feed of the card or label to printing position; in the use of both of which general forms of card or label,- holding devices certain auxiliary guiding and feeding mechanisms and parts are required; or, no provision is made foruse in conjunction therewith of means for hold-Q ing and feeding on theplatenwork-sheets or webs related to the cards or labels. IVhen directly mounted 011 the platen, the holder has heretofore not ordinarily'beensuscep tible of use in conjunction with the typewriting of sheets or websrequiring a complete revolution of the platen.
An object of the invention is the provisionof a card or label holder such that the cards or labels may be inserted therein, leading-end first, from the front of the machine. Another object of the invention is the provision of a card or label holder such that, without turning the" platen, or dis turbing the position of any work-sheet or web thereon, the card or label maybe inserted from the front of the machine and brought to correct printing position in the holder.
' A feature of the invention is the provision of a card or label holder, for use in the platen in conjun'ctionwith means for holding a Work-sheet or web on the platen alongside the card or label, and so designed and mounted that, by shifting the carriage, the card or label holder may be made to clear the mainframe of the machine, to permit the cards'or labels to be inserted into the machine, and directly into the holder, leading-end first, from the front of the machine.
Another feature of theinvention is the provision of a card or label holder mounted on the carriage, and such that, without a feeding movement of the-holder, or a feed Lit of the card or label by turning the platen,
the card or label may be positioned at the printing line in the holder.
tion beside the web, and gearing arranged which is subsequently affixed to the telephone 1nouth-piece. It will be noted (see Figure 1) that the web 10 is sufficiently narrow to permit of space to the right thereof on the platen for the card 50.
In positioning the card or label, the platen carriage is drawn to the right, so that card holder at? lies to the right of the right-hand side 52 of the machine frame. The card is then slipped from the right, underneath the carriage frame, and up under the fingers or clips 48 of the card holder H, the upturned ends 49 of the clips guiding the card upward.
I'Vhen the worksheet and label have been completed, the platen is displaced to permit straightening of the work-web preparatory to the usual carbon-withdrawing, webgaging and tearing-off operations. The pinions 31 and 32 are operatively engaged with each other throughout the displacing movement, the latter pinion remaining stationary. This causes the pinion 31, and consequently the platen, to be rotated in an anti-line-feed direction to automatically eject the card from its holder, at the lower end thereof, during the displacing movement.
Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions of the improvements may be used without others.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a front-strike typewriting machine,
a revoluble platen, a platen-frame, and a onepiece card-holder consisting of a U- shaped member curved to conform to the periphery of said platen and being selfacting to hold a card firmly against the front face of said platen, said member being inverted and extending below the printing line on said platen and being secured to said platen-frame at one end thereof, to be wholly outside of the bounds of the typewriter frame when the platen is in a position corresponding to its limit of travel, to eliminate interference to movement accompanying an upward thrust of the card to printing position from a point below the printing line on said platen.
2. In a typewriting machine, a revoluble platen, a platen-frame having a rear paper shelf at the delivery side of the platen, and a card-holder consisting of a Ushapedmember inverted and connected at its closed end to the paper-shelf to be suspended therefrom, said member being curved to conform to the periphery of said platen, also selfacting, to hold a card firmly against the front face of said platen, and yielding of itself to permit insertion of the card between it and said platen, said curvature of said member extending below the printing line on said platen at which point insertion of the card is effected, followed by an upward thrust of the card to printing position on said platen.
3. In a typewriting machine, a revoluble platen, a platen-frame having a rear papershelf at the delivery side of said platen, a
screw to attach said paper-shelf to said 7 platen-frame, and a one-piece U-shaped cardholder inverted and connected at its closed end to said paper-shelf by said screw, said card-holder curving around said platen, to'
hold a card firmly against the front faceof said platen at the printing line and above I placement of the card on the printing line I by an upward thrust, and a metal strip connected to said holder at its closed end, extending upwardly therefrom and being attached to said paper-shelf by said screw, to support said card-holder in said depending position.
5. In a typewriting machine, a revoluble platen, a platen-frame having a rear papershelf at the delivery side of said platen, means to attach said paper-shelf to said platen-frame, a one-piece U-shaped cardholder having a curve to conform to the curvature of said platen, said holder being inverted and depending from said papershelf at the right-hand side thereof, across the front face of said platen and acting of itself to hold a card firmly against said 1 platen at the printing line and above and,
below said line, and being flared outwardly at its lower end to facilitate placement of the card to printing position by the upward thrust of the card, and an arm extending upwardly from the closed end of the cardholder and being attached to said papershelf.
