UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANNIE E. SAWYER, OF OHARLESTOWN, MASSACHUSETTS.
SKI RT-PROTECTO R.
$PECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent No. 318,038, dated May 19, 1885.
Application filed October 20, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom/it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANNIE E. SAWYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Charles town, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Skirt-Protectors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in means for protecting the lower portions of a lady's dress or skirt from water, mud, 8rd; and it consists of a protector composed of a single piece of rubber cloth, or other suitable material, the edges of which are turned up and provided with an elastic band or cord. In the said cloth are two holes, on the outside of. which are attached leggins for the reception of the lower ends of the legs, while the lower portion of the skirt or dress is tucked into the cloth as in a bag and held by means of the elastic, and is sustained by means of straps or strips of tape attached to a waistband.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents my invention as when worn. Fig. 2 shows the article itself, and Fig. 3 shows a single piece of cloth of which the main portion of the article is made. Fig. 4 is a section of the upper edge of the article.
A represents the body of the protector, and is made of a single piece of rubber cloth, or other suitable material, as shown in Fig. 3, two holes, a a, being made in the same, to which are to be attached leggins. The edges of the said piece A are gathered and turned over, and within the hem is placed an elastic tape or cord. (Shown in Figs. 2 and 4..)
E E are leggins which are sewed to the body A at the holes a a, and are provided with elastic cords at their lower ends to make them fit snugly over the ankles.
Straps e e are attached to the lower ends of 0 the leggins, to pass under the feet and prevent the working up of the leggins. Straps F F are also attached to the upper ends of the leggins E E, to hold them in place. It is intended that the lower pcrtion of the body A should fall over and conceal the straps F F.
To the upper edges of the body A are attached straps b b, which extend upward and are fastened to the waist-belt B, as shown.
This protector is intended to be covered by a cloak or water-proof, as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 1, so as to conceal it from view.
When in use, the lower ends of the skirts and dress are tucked into the protector A, or the skirts alone can ..be tucked in, and the dress allowed to be outside and held up out of contact with the mud and wet.
The protector is very simple and cheaply constructed, and can be folded into a small compass for carrying about when not in use.
What I claim as my invention is A dress or skirt protector composed of the body A, made from a single piece of material and gathered by an elastic cord or tape at the upper edge, the leggins E E, attached to the body A, and provided with the straps F F, and elastics at the lower ends, the straps b b, and the waistband B, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ANNIE E. SAWYER.
