HOOPER B. STRAUT, OF OULBERTSON, NEBRASKA.
CALF-WEANER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 3l7,88l, dated May 12, 1885.
(N0 model.)
.To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that l, HOOPER B. STRAUT, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Culbertson, in the county of Hitchcock and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Calf- W eaners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in calf-weaners, the same being designed more especially as an improvement upon the device described in my Patent No. 297,870, said patent being dated April 29, 1884, my present invention consisting in certain improvements, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front view showing the same applied to the nose of an animal. Fig. 2 is a perspective view. Fig. 3 is a sectional view.
A represents a metallic plate, which is provided with teeth I), which are formed integral therewith, said teeth being formed of a part of the plate, which is bent at right angles with the main body portion. The upper edge of the plate A is bent upon itself, as shown at 0, so as to provide a loop for the securing-pin G, the upset portion of the metal being secured to the main portion of the plate by rivets d d. The lower end of the plate A is also upset or turned upon itself, so as to embrace a stiffening-wire, d. The pointed rod G has a portion, 0, bent upon itself, as shown, and said bent portion is adapted to enter an opening, D, which is formed near the end of the plate A, between the two portions of the sheet of metal. This rod, after being inserted through the cartilage of the animals nose, is forced into the space between the pieces of the plate A, and this corner is upset upon the curved portion 0 of the rod, so as to preventthesame being displaced.
I find this to be a much more convenient means of securing the parts to each other than that shown in my prior patent, as it is difficult to bend the parts into a position and unbend them when it is desired to remove the plate after the calf has been weaned.
Having thus described an improvement upon the device described in my Patent No. 297,870, dated April 29, 1884, what I claim 1s A cal f-weaner consisting of a plate having integral teeth, as described, and loop portions at its upper edge, one of said loop portions being so bent as to form a pocket, D, and the pointed securingrod having a bend, 0, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth. 9
In testimony whereofI affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HOOPER B. S lRAUT.
