Be it known that I, JOHN N. Snaees, a citizen of the United States, residmg at Lewellen, in the county of Garden and State vide an extremely simple and inexpensive,

yet an efiicient and desirable device for weaning calves, colts, etc., and with this object in view the invention resides in the novel construction shown, described and claimed.

In the drawing above briefly described, the numeral 1 designates a front plate and the characters 2 have reference to a pair of side plates, the three being preferably bent from a single sheet metal plate as shown. The plate 1 is of rectangular formation while the side plates 2 preferably decrease in width toward their upper ends and diverge rearwardly.

Secured by brazing, riveting, or otherwise to the side plates 2 are two hanger rods 3 which curve upwardly and inwardly and are provided at their ends with knobs A to receive therebetween the nose cartilage. In some instances, the resiliency of the metal may be relied upon to permit spreading of the knobs 4 suiiiciently to apply the device and to then retain them yieldably in place on the nose cartilage. In most cases, however, a spring metal strip 5 extends between the front edges of the side plates 2 and has its ends bent rearwardly and secured at 6 to said plates. This arrangement insures proper retention of the weaner in place by augmenting the resiliency of the metal.

From the foregoing it will be seen that although the invention is of simple and inexpensive nature, it will be very efiicient as a weaner for numerous kinds of young animals. The device is eifectively held in place, yet is humane and in no manner hinders grazing and eating in other ways than nursing. Since excellent results have been obtained by the arrangement shown, it is preferable, but within the scope of the invention as claimed numerous minor changes may well be made.

I claim 1. A weaner comprising a front plate, side plates extending rearwardly from said front plate, a pair of hanger rods joined to and rising from said side plates in rearwardly spaced relation to said front plate, said rods having knobs on their upper ends, and a spring extending between and connected at its ends to said side plates for drawing them inwardly toward each other, whereby to cause said knobs to grip the animals nose cartilage.

2. A weaner comprising a front plate, side plates integrally joined to and extending rearwardly from said frontplate, hanger rods secured to and rising from said side plates in rearwardly spaced relation to said front plate, said rods having knobs on their upper ends to yieldably grip the animals nose cartilage, and a strip of resilient metal extending between the front ends of said side plates adjacent said front plate, said strip having its ends bent rearwardly and secured to said side plates.
