SIMEON S. GROVES, OF GRIGGSVILLE, ILLINOIS.
KITCHEN-CABINET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 317,766, dated May 12, 1885.
Application filed January 9, 1885. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, SIMEON S. Gaovns, a citizen of the United States, andaresident of Griggsville, in the county of Pike and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Kitchen-Cabinets, and I do hereby declare ,that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains tomake and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a perspective view of akitchencabinetprovided with my improvement, showing the latter in position ready for use. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the cabinet, showing the device folded or closed, as when not in use; and Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the cabinet.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to so called kitchcn-cabinetsg7 and it consists in the combination, with the cabinct,of a peculiarly-constructed dish-drainer and dish rack or support, substantially as Will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Reference being had to the accompanying drawings, A represents the body of the cabinet, which has a dat top, B, and a falling or extension leaf, C. At one end of the cabinet is a sink, D, having an opening in the bottom closed with a plug or cork, so that when the plug is removed the water in the sink will flow down into a suitable vessel or receptacle, E, placed upon a rest or extension, F.
Arranged underneath the xed top B is a sliding dough-board, G, which, when not in use, is pushed back into the cabinet, so as to be out of the Way and protect its surface from dirt.
The top of the cabinet is constructed with a fixed back-piece, I, at opposite ends of which are two narrow vertical slots or recesses, t' 'i'. In the corner between the horizontal top B and fixed back I is hinged a narrow trough, J, having a hole, K, at one end, which registers with a channel or gutter, L, in the top of the cabinet leading to the sink D. When this trough is in a vertical position, folded up against the fixed back I, the recesses fi in the latter afford room for the end flanges, j,of the trough,so that thelatter may be folded up close against the fixed back. That end ofthe trough. which is farthest from the opening K should be a little higher than the end having the opening, so that Water which accumulates in the trough will drain in the direction of the opening and the gutter L.
M is the adjustable dish rack or support, which consists of a stout wire or slender rod of metal, bent at opposite ends to form arms N, having elbows O, the ends of which are pivoted in the ends ofthe fixed back-piece I. When the rack is not in use,it is folded down behind the cabinet, in whichV position it is entirely out of the way; but when it is desired for use it is turned up into the position shown in Fig. 1 in full lines and indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 3, with its elbows resting upon the top of the table or cabinet. 'Vhen in this position, it forms a support or rest for the plates or dishes, which are placed edgewise in the trough J, so that the water may readily drain from them down into the sink, and when the rack is not in use it may be used as a towelrack for the towels or dish-cloths used in washing the dishes.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The combination of the table or kitchencabinet having the flat top B, fixed back I, sink D, and gutter L, hinged trough J, adapted to be folded up against the fixed back, and having an aperture, K, at one end, registering with the gutter L, and hinged dish rack or support M N, having the elbows O, adapted to hold the rack in an upright position when in use, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SIIVIEON S. GROVES.
