SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 317,670, dated May 12, 1885.

T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LGEORGE FRANK POTTLE, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of w renches which are called self-gripping77 wrenches, and has for its object to make the wrench more automatic in its action and of increased strength and durability. These objects I attain by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 shows my invention in elevation. Fig. 2 shows the same in section. Fig. 3 shows in detail a spiral spring and a protectingthimble.
The shank A A and the fixed jaw B, together with the handle C of my wrench, are made in the usual manner. The screw-nut D works on the shank A', as shown, and is provided with a groove, K, near one end, into which ts a projection, H, of the housing E. The movable jaw M is connected to the hous ing E by the pivot V, Figs. 1 and 2, so that it may swing down and toward the jaw B as the strain is applied to it.
