ROBERT BOGARDUS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
FRESH-MEAT-SHIPPING CAN, BOX, OR PACKAGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 317,615, dated May 12, 1885.
Application filed January 12, 1885. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT BOGARDUS, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city, county, and State of New York, have in vented a new and useful Fresh-Meat-Shippiug Gan, Box, or Package.
My invention relates to improvements in boxes, cans, or packages used for preserving, transporting, or storing fresh-meat cuts. This class of meats is very susceptible to the decomposing elements of the atmosphere, from which my invention provides a more perfect protection, and of which the following is a specification.
The objects of my invention are, first, to provide for compressing the meats in the package and limiting the inclosed capacity of the box or can to the quantity of meat packed therein; second, to provide a packing for cancover that will more perfectly protect the meats from atmospheric contact; and, third,
to regulate the temperature of the meat as.
circumstances require. I attain these objects by the devices illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 shows a central vertical sectional View of an apparatus combining my improve- 1nents,wherein reference to the different parts are made by the following letters: The meatcan (or box) A, its piston head or cover B, rod for adjusting the cover 0, flexible packing D, packing-rim E, packing groove G, jacket H, its top F, spacing-strips S, space for regulating temperature T, nut a, hole for adjusting rod to pass through cover h, universal joint 6, and meat-chamber c. Fig. 2 is a modification of the invention shownin Fig. 1.
Similar letters refer to similar parts on all the figures.
To accomplish the first object, I provide an open-top box, vessel, or can, (of the latter a cylindrical shape is preferred,) A, having parallel vertical sides. To this can, box, or
vessel A is fitted a piston head or cover, B, so
arranged as to slide into the can, box, or vessel A, and thus contract the inclosed space 0 of the can, box, or vessel A indefinitely.
To compress the meats and reduce and retain the chamber 0 to the limit of space the meats thus occupy, I force the follower B inward. Then, by means of a lever or screw arranged to act on the head B, and react on the can, box, or vessel A through a yoke or collar attached to the can A, or by means of a rod, 0, which is attached to the bottom of can or box A, and passes up through the chamber O, and out through a hole, It, in the cover B,where a key or nut, n, is attached, as shown in Fig. 1, for the purpose of holding follower B in position, and I use nails or straps for the same purpose on boxes.
To accomplish the second object, I bevel the edge of the follower B, so as to form a V- shaped annular groove, 9, between the edge of the follower B and the sides of the can, box, or vessel A. In the groove 9, I place a packing, D, that is flexible and of sufficient bulk to fill the groove g. I also place upon this packing 9 a metallic or wooden rim, E, that W111, when forced upon the packing D, press it (D) into the groove 9 until it is wedged between the bevel edge on follower B and the sides of can A, and thus further protect the meats from atmospheric pollution.
The third object I accomplish by providing a water-tight jacket, H, in which I incase the fresh-meat can A. In combining the jacket H with the can A, I provide a space, T, of fixed and suitable proportions, to meet the requirements for which this space is designed viz., for a confined air-space, for sawdust, or any suitable non-conducting material, for ice when required as a refrigerator, and also for water or steam to be used as a means of raising the temperature in the meat-chamber 0. These provisions are all essential to meet the requirements for which this package is designed.
To retain the can A in its proper central position in the case H, I provide three or more spacing blocks or strips, S, which I rigidly attach longitudinally to the inside of the case H at about equal distances from each other. The width of the strips S nearly equal the distance between the can A and case H. The top F of jacket H can be easily removed when required.
Having described and illustrated my inven tion, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent and claim to be novel and useful improvements in the construction of packages or apparatus for preserving and shipping freshmeat cuts is- 1. The can, box, or vessel A, combined with ICO piston-head cover B, all being constructed and with rod 0, substantially as and for the purarranged substantially as illustrated and depose described. scribed, and to operate as and for the purpose 4. The vessel A, follower B, and rod 0, coinspecified. bined with jacket or case H, all constructed 5 5 2. In a freshmeat package, the piston-head and arranged substantially as and for the pur cover B, (when beveled so as to form the anpose described. nular groove 9,) combined with a flexible packing, D, packing-rim E, and can or Vessel A, all being constructed and arranged sub- 10 stantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. The vessel A and follower B, combined ROBT. BOGARDUS.
