UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM P. COLE, OF MONTREAL, QUEBEC, CANADA.
STOVE-BOARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 317,512, dated May 12, 1885.
' Application filed November 13, 1883. (No model.)
*0 alt whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WM. P. OoLE, of Mentreal, Province of Quebec, Dominion of Canada, have invented a new and Improved StoveBoard, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to an improvement in stove-boards, having for its object the protection of floors and carpets; and the invention consists of an upper external layer of asbestus and a board or frame with an intermediate layer of woven fabric, edge-binders, and corner-caps, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which the same letters of reference indicate the same parts in both figures.
Figure l is a plan view of my improved stove-board; and Fig. 2 is a cross section of the same on the line as w of Fig. 1.
I arrange upon a backing of cotton or other woven fabric, 0, a layer, a, of asbestus felt, paper, or plastic asbestus, cementing or gluin g said layer of asbestus to said backing, and secure said backing upon a board or frame, I), and then properly bind the edges of the material together with thin sheet-metal e to protect the same and prevent the different parts from separating and tearing apart, thus making a stove-board adapted to protect floors and carpets. I use the board or frame mainly as a foundation upon which to secure the as bestus, backed as set forth, to prevent the same bodily breaking apart, while the cotton or fabric forms an elastic support for the asbestus to prevent its cracking, and effects a more perfect union between the latter and the board.
In addition to protecting the edges of the material as above described, I also protect the corners with metal caps f.
The asbestus layer, together with the cotton or fabric, may be extended around the edges of the board, as represented in Fig. 2.
I propose to paint the upper surface of the asbestus, or otherwise impart thereto a smooth and artistic finish, so as to be decorated in figures wrought in the surface or produced with colors.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The described stove-board, consisting of the upper external layer of asbestus, the board or frame, the intermediate layer of woven fabric, the metallic edge-binders, and the cornercaps, substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
