NAPPING MACHINE Filed May 8, 1962 III I I YVEIVTOG c/Aeass .95497724410 United States Patent O 3,l74,205 NAPPWG MACHINE Charles Bertrand, Ver-Viera, Belgium, assignor, by masne assignments, to Beacon Mannfactu'ing Company, Swannanoa, N .C., a Corporation of Deiaware Filed May 8, 1962, Ser. No. 193,213 Claims priority, application Belgium, May 18, 1961, 603391 2 Clains. (Ci. 26-33) This invention relates to machines for the napping of clothes and blanket material, and further to bring to these machines certain improvements so as to give the material a very dense nap, With a minimal loss of material.
One of the objects of the present invention is to provide the drum of the napping machine with working rollers of diiierent diameters.
According to another object of the invention, the exit roller of the napping machine is movably mounted on a bearing partly surrounding the drum.
According to a further object of the invention, said bearing is movably mounted on the frame of the machine.
Further features of the invention will be understood from a consideration of the following more detailed description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, in which:
The figure presented is a side elevation View of the machine of this invention.
The napping machine of the drawing consists of frame 1, on which is mountcd a drum 2 having a horizontal axle 3. Around drum 2 are placed, on bearings 4, little cylinders, whi h are called workers, in the present case twenty-four of them. These workers are divided in two series, twelve pile workers 5 and twelve counterpile workers 6, each series having a special power source, not represented, and workers 5 alternate with workers 6.
in contrast to known napping machines, rollers or workers 5 and 6 have different diameters. Thus, one may see from the drawing that pile workers 5 have a larger diameter than counterpile workers 6.
On the front, the frame 1 is provided with an entry roll 7, the position of which is stationary, whereas on the back it is provided with an exit roll 8, the position of which may be altered. To this end, said roll 8 is mounted on a bearing 9 partially surrounding the drum 2 and its axle 10 can be moved in a groove 9' in the said bearing.
Further, the exit roll 8 can also be moved nearer or removed to a greater distance from the workers due to the fact that its bearing 9 is adjustably mounted on the frame. The base of the bearing has a groove 9" in &374205 Patented Mar. 23, 1965 which a protruding bolt 11 is utilized to fix the bearing to the hame. The bearing is kept in the desired position by the application of a screwnut to the bolt 11.
In a napping machine according to the invention, the fabric passing over the working rollers of different diameters is not so harshly attacked and, in combination with the movable exit roller, the amount of nap developed may be very easily controlled. Such a napping machine allows for a great saving of material and reduces the time required for the work to 50%. It also reduces breakage of threads.
The adaptation of the new characteristics of this napping machine is made according to the material processed and the required result.
It is to be mentioned that the improvements as described above and related to the present invention may be applied to existing and conventional napping machines.
I claim:
1. A machine for napping Clothes and blanket material comprising a frame, a cylindrical drum rotatably mounted on said frame, a plurality of sets of cylindrical working rollers of different diameters alternately and rotatably mounted around the circumference of said drum, an exit roller bearing adjustably mounted on said frame for radal adjustment relative to said drum, and a rotatable exit roller adjustably mounted on said exit roller bearing for circumferential adjustrnent relative to said drum, whereby the length of the path of the material through the machine may be altered to vary the amount of nap obtained thereon.
2. A machine as set forth in claim 1, in which said exit roller bearing forms a circular arc partially surrounding said drum and having a groove in which said exit roller may be moved to change the position of said roller with respect to circumference of said drum.
