E lr Y v y v v v y v v NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN WESLEY HUGHES, OF OSKALOOSA, IOWA.
c'AR-couPLlNc.
SPECIFICATIONOIming part of Letters Patent No. 317,363, dated May 5, 1885,
Application tiled March 19, 1885.
To @ZZ whom, it may concern.-
Beit known Ythat I, JOHN W. HUGHEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oskaloosa, in the county of Mahaska and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Iniprovement in Car-Couplings, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to car-couplings; and it has for its obj ect to provide improved means for guiding thelink to the chamber of the draw-head, and to support the pin in a raised position in such manner that it will be lowered when the cars come together.
A further object of the invention is to provide a car-coupling which shall be positive and effective in its operation, and one that will be strong and durable.
With these ends in view the invention consists in the improved construction and detailed arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described, `and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a car-coupling constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same. Eig. 3-is a bottom View.
In the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the gures, A represents the drawbars, which are designed to be rigidly secured to the under side of the car. The said drawbars A are arranged a sufficient distance apart to admit of a draw-head, B, sliding therein. The rear ends of the draw-bars A are connected by a block, a, having a hole or opening, and secured to the rear end of the draw-head and extending through the opening in the said block a is a head-bar, b, on which is a spring, c, bearing against the rear end of the drawhead at one end, and against the inner side of the block a at its other end, whereby the front end of the draw-head is normally held in a position beyond the front end of the car. The draw-head is held against downward movement near its front end by a metal strap, e, which connects the draw-bars A at their forward ends.
Upon the under side of the draw-head B is secured a plate, C, having its rear end turned downwardly to form a bracket, b', and provided with a hole or opening. At the forward (No model.)
end of this plate C is hinged a link-guide, D, the forward end of which extends outwardly beyond the draw-head, and is provided with a front face which inclines upwardly from its lower end to the lower end of the mouth of the draw-head.
E represents the pin-support, which consists of two upwardly-extending arms, E', located 6c on opposite sides of the draw-head, and having rearwardly-extendin g extensions e' at their upper end. These arms E extend outwardly, then forwardly, and then upwardly from opposite sides of a plate, F, located on the under side of the draw-head B, said plate being held in place u`pon the plate C by flanges G,formed integral with the plate G, and turned inwardly to form guides. The rear end of the plate F is reduced, thus forming a shoulder, f, upon 7o which is a spring, g, bearing against said shoulder at one end, and against the bracket b at its other end, the extremity of said plate working in the hole or opening in the bracket b.
Formed integral with or secured to the arms E are outwardly-extending arms H, having their ends turned inwardly, as shown at li, and secured to the under side of the link-guide D is a plate, I, having its ends turned upwardly, 8o as shown at z, and formed with holes or openings.
Connecting the plate I and the short arms H are links J, the ends of which are turned to form hooks, which fit the holes or openings in 8 5 the said short arms and in the upturned ends of the plate I. Upon the front of the car are levers J', the inner ends of which are pivotally connected by a bolt, j, carrying a hook, 7c,which is adapted to fit a hole or opening,- Z, in a coup- 9o ling-pin, m, and said coupling-pin is adapted to engage holes or openings n in the drawhead. The said levers J are pivoted to the front of the car by means of pivoted links o.
Upon the upper side of the draw-head are arranged looped guides K, which inclose the inner ends of the pivoted levers and limit the upward movement of the same, thus preventing the coupling-pin from becoming detached.
Having fully described my inventoin, what roc I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a car-coupling, the combination, with a draw-head, of pivoted levers carrying a pivoted coupling-pin, guides K upon the upper side of the draw-head, a longitudinally-sliding plate carrying a hinged link-guide, arms eX- tending upwardly from said plate, andl'having rearwardly-extending short arms for supporting the link in a raised position, as set forth.
2. In a ear-coupling, the combination,witl1 a draw-head, of a spring-aetuated plate located 0n the under side thereof, a hinged link-guide at the forward end of said plate, pivoted levers carrying a pivoted pin, arms 'for supporting the same, arms H, having inturned ends, and links J, connecting the spring-actuated plate, and the link-guide, as set forth.
3. In a ear-coupling, the combination,with a longitudinally-sliding draw-head, and a ERVIN D. AYLswoRTH, Y' W HENRIE L. THATCHER.
