Description

W. T. WOOD March 2, 1965 ADJUSTABLE SHEET GUIDES FOR TAPE DELIVERY PRESSES Filed June 13, 1963 INVENTOR VV/ALM/V/ 7. W000 MN MN ATTORNEY United States Patent 3,171,648 ADJUSTABLE SHEET GUlDES FOR TAPE DELIVERY PRESSES William T. Wood, Rte. 2, Box 1396, Peoria, Ariz. Filed June 13, 1963, Ser. No. 287,607 2 Claims. (Cl. 271-49) This invention pertains to improvements in printing presses and is particularly directed to an improved adjustable sheet guide for tape delivery printing presses.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide an easily installed attachment for tape delivery printing presses to eliect accurate positioning and delivery of the printed sheets to jogger boX.
A further object is to provide a sheet guide attachment for a tape delivery printing press which prevents misalignment of the delivered sheets and consequent interruption of the normal high speed operation of the press.
A still further object is to provide a sheet guide attachment adapted to be mounted on the tape delivery apparatus of a printing press which is easily and quickly arranged to handle any size sheets being operated upon by the press.
Further features and advantages of this invention will appear from a detailed description of the drawings in which:
FIG. 1 is a plan view of the adjustable sheet guide incorporating the features of this invention.
FIG. 2 is a sectional view on the line 22 of FIG. 1.
FIG. 3 is a sectional view on the line 33 of FIG. 1.
FIG. 4 is a sectional view on the line 44 of FIG. 2.
FIG. 5 is a fragmentary end view of an offset sheet guide plate.
As an example of one embodiment of this invention there is shown a tape delivery printing press having the usual side frames upon which is mounted the usual sheet turner cylinder 11 and the delivery tapes 12 operating over the delivery tape rolls 13 appropriately journaled and driven on the frame 10 so that the tapes move in the direction indicated by the arrows 14. As the printed sheet 15 drops from the sheet turner cylinder onto the delivery tapes, the sheets are carried along and discharged over the usual Bunsen burners 16 for heating and drying and floating of the sheet as it enters the jogger box 17 to form the accurately piled stack of completed sheets 18.
It has been found that as the sheet 15 drops to the tapes 12 it does not necessarily remain in accurate squared position but may become cooked or turned due to the uneven tension and friction of the various tapes 12. As a result, the sheets 15, after passing over the burners 16, are cocked and do not fall properly in the jogger box 17 and get hung up on the sides thereof with the resulting damage to the sheets and jamming of the jogger box and delivery mechanism of the print ing press.
To the end of overcoming the aforementioned difiiculties there has been provided a sheet guide apparatus associated with the delivery tapes comprising a pair of laterally spaced support brackets 19 and 29 having base portions 21 fixed to the side frames 10 by suitable bolts 22 and integral upright plates 23. A pair of spaced support rods 24 have their ends passing through suitable perforations in the upright plates 23 and are located within the upper and lower portions of tapes 12 and are securely locked thereto by appropriate nuts 25. Intermediate the support rods 25 and parallel thereto is the adjustment rod 26 threaded throughout its entire length and received at its ends suitable perforations in the upright plates 23 and securely locked thereto by appropriate nuts 27.
3,171,648 Patented Mar. 2, 1965 Straight sheet guide plates 28, FIG. 3, have downwardly extending slots 29 located in the spaces 33 between the tapes adapted to receive guide rods 24 and a clearance slot 30 to accommodate the adjustment rod 26. Adjustable wing nuts 31 mounted on the threaded adjustment rod 26 are adapted to be tightened against the side faces 32 of the straight sheet guide plates 28 to lock them in any desirable spaced positions between the tapes 12 longitudinally of the support rods 24. The clamping up of the Wing nuts 31 align the plates 28 in parallel relationship at right angles to the rods 24. Engagement of the bottom of the slots 29 with the rods 24 maintains horizontal alignment of the plates 28. Thus, as the sheet 15 drops from the sheet turner cylinder it is dropped between the properly set plates 28 and onto the tapes 12 so that the sheets are positively held in proper alignment as the tapes move the sheets out over the burners 16 into the jogger box 17.
In certain instances the spacing 33 between the sheet guides may not coincide with the width of the sheets to be guided by the straight sheet guide plates 28. To overcome this situation there is provided otfset sheet guide plates 34 such as shown in FIG. 5 wherein the upper edge 35 of the sheet guide plate is oifset from the main portion 34 so as to provide a vertical guide surface 36 to engage the edge of the sheet 15 located over and above a tape 12. In this arrangement the bottom surface of the printed sheet 15 adjacent its side edges actually slides on the horizontal surface 37 as it is being moved along by the tapes 12 between the surfaces 36 of the otfset sheet guide plates 34.
While the apparatus herein disclosed and described constitutes a preferred form of the invention, it is also to be understood that the apparatus is capable of mechanical alteration without departing from the spirit of the invention and that such mechanical arrangement and commercial adaptation as fall within the scope of the appendent claims are intended to be included herein.
Having thus fully set forth and described this invention what is claimed and desired to be obtained by United States Letters Patent is:
