HAIR RETAINER AND HEAT SHIELD Filed Sept. 4, 1962 H If I I rtlkao 24 50 F I \l i I: i v l U 30 i; F/G. 3
\ 34 INVENTOR FRANCES E. UHL F IG. 2 BY ATTORNE YS 3,167,785 HAIR RETAINER AND HEAT SHIELD Frances E. Uhl, 610 Pierce Ave, Columbus, Ohio Filed'Sept. 4, 1962, Ser. No. 221,085 1 Claim. (Cl. 2-174 This invention relates to a combined hair retainer and heat shield for use by cosmetologists to protect the wearer from heated air from hair drying machines.
In general, the device of the present invention comprises a sheet of soft pliable disposable material that includes a lower portion for overlying the neck of the wearer and right and left upper portions provided with car receiving apertures.
The device is positioned and retained in a heat shielding position over the ears and back of the neck of the wearer by curving the sheet around the back of the neck and suspending the sheet from the ears by means of the above mentioned apertures into which the upper portions of the ears are extended.
The sheet is further retained in close conformity with the back of the neck and ears by a flexible netting placed over the hair with the lower edge of the netting in overlying retained relationship with the upper edge portion of the sheet.
permitting disposal after use.
It is, therefore, an object of the present invention to provide a hair retaining heat shield of simple and inexpensive construction that is retained in conformity with the head in a novel and inexpensive manner.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a hair retaining heat shield of the type described that requires no shaping frame or stiffening means.
Further objects and advantages of the present invention will be apparent from the following description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings wherein preferred forms of embodiments of the invention are clearly shown.
In the drawings:
FIG. 1 is a plan view partially in perspective of a sheet member that forms the heat shield portion of the device of the present invention;
FIG. 2 is a perspectiveview of the device of the present invention in place on the head of the wearer; and
FIG. 3 is a partial plan view of a hair retaining portion of a modified heat shield comprising a portion of the device of the present invention.
Referring indetail to the drawings, a hair retaining heat shield device constructed in accordance with the present invention is indicated generally at 20 in FIG. 2 and includes a heat shield portion indicated generally at .22, the upper edge portions 24, 26, and 28 of which underlie the lower edge portion 30 of a net indicated gen erally at 32.
Referring next to FIG. 1, heat shield portion 22 comprises a lower neck protecting portion 34 and right and left upper portions 36 anud 38 the latter being provided with ear receiving slots 40.
Patented Feb. 1965 Heat shield portion 22 is preferably formed of soft pliable paper material of multiple layer construction such as is assembled by the three layers 42, 44, and 46 as seen in the upper right corner of FIG. 1. It will be noted that only the inner layer 46 is slotted at 48 and unsecured to layers 42 and 44 at the upper ends thereof FIGURE 1 whereby intermediate layer 44 and outer layer 42 overlie the wearers ears and provide heat shielding protection.
Reference is next made to FIG. 3 which illustrates a portion of a modified heat shield portion 22-A that includes patch portions 50 on the upper sheet portions I 36-38, said patch portions being secured to the main sheet at a bonded junction 52 that extends around three sides of patch portions St}, the fourth side of the patch being free to form an ear receiving slot- 54.
In operation, one of the heat shield portions 22 or 22-A is curved around the rear of the wearers neck and the upper portion of the ears are inserted into the slots 49 or 54.
Net portion32 is then placed over the wearers head with the lower edge portion 30 of the net overlying the upper edge portions 24, 26, and 28 of the shield portion such that the soft flexible shield portion is retained in conformity with the neck and ears by the overlying lower part of the net portion.
While the forms of embodiments of the present invention as herein disclosed constitute preferred forms, it is to be understood that other forms might be adopted, all coming within the scope of the claim which follows.
I claim:
In combination with a hair retainer a heat shield comprising of:
(a) a generally U-shaped pliable disposable sheet portion,
(b) said sheet portion composed of a plurality of layers including an inner layer and an outer layer,
(0) said sheet portion having a lower portion for shielding the neck and right and left upper portions extending from'said lower portion,
(d) said right and left upper portions being provided with ear receiving apertures in only said inner layer,
(e) said plurality of layers being secured together at said lower portion and unsecured adjacent said apertures in said upper portions, whereby the ears of a wearer are shielded,
(f) the inner side edges of said U-shaped sheet portion being curved inwardly to conform with the shape of the base of the wearers neck,
(g) and a separate net portion for covering the hair including a lower rear portion overlying the upper edge of said sheet portion for retaining said sheet portion in a stable position in close conformity with v the shape of the wearers head;
