UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELIJAH CARPENTER, OF LAFAYETTE, OREGON.
CAN DLESTICK.
BPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 316,740, dated April 281, 1885.
Application filed December 8, 1884.
,To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ELIJAH CARPENTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lafayette, in the county of Yam Hill and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Candlesticks, of which the following is a description.
This invention relates to that class of devices which are used for supporting tallow, sperm, or Wax candles in an upright position while burning, and to serve as a handle by which the same may be conveniently carried while in use.
The object of the invention is to carry acandle with its lower end at a distance above the base of the Candlestick, and to burn the candle entirely away without in any way moving it relatively to the candlestick to free it from its holding-socket, thereby using the candle economically, and without danger of flirting melted grease about, as is frequently done with such Candlesticks as raise the candle end when stuck in the socket to permit it to burn.
To this end my invention consists in abroad base, a post lined thereon, a sleeve to slide on the post, and a spring to hold ithe sleeve, as hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 is a central vertical section, of a Candlestick according to my invention.
A represents the base of the candlestick, which may be of any form to suit the fancy. B is a common handle therefor. O is a post,
of the size of a candle, rigidly fixed to the base A. D is a tube or sleeve fitted to slide freely up and down upon the post C, and to project above the top of the post enough to (No model.)
receive the lower end of the candle, as shown in dotted lines, to hold the candle erect on top of the post. E is a spring within the post, having a nib, F, projecting through a hole in the post to bear against the inner face of the sleeveV to hold the same steadily at any height where it may be set. By grasping the raised sleeve and the post below it in one hand the sleeve may be easily held raised while pushing a Close-fitting candle. Whenthe candle is consumed nearly down to the sleeve, the latter may be easily slid down a little with one hand. This is done Without any danger of upsetting the candle or flirting melted tallow, because the pressure, being downward, has no tendency to move the Candlestick. The top of the sleeve may be provided with the usual saucershaped flange; but I think this retaining a pool of melted grease around the candle tends to melt away the body of the candle and Waste it, and I think that the saucer itself tends to confine and reflect the heat back, and thereby to melt the candle where it is not burning. I therefore prefer to dispense with the saucer or iange at the top of the Candlestick.
Vhat I claim as my inventiomand desireto secure by Letters Patent, is-
' The combination, with a Candlestick having a stationary post and a sleeve to slide vertically thereon, of a spring within the post, having a nib projecting through a hole in the post to bear against theinner face of the sleeve, substantially as shown and described, for the purpose set forth.
