Description
,y UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEVI- W. HAYDEN, OF IVILKES-BARRE, PENNSYLVANIA.
MACHINE FOR CRIMPING BOOTS.
Specification of.Lette1s Patent No. 31,664, dated March 12, 1861.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEvi IV. HAYDEN, of IVilkes-Barre, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boot- Crimping Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The naturel of my invention consists in constructing and arranging the several parts of this machine in the manner hereinafter set forth.
In the annexed drawings Figures 1 and 3 represent side elevations. Fig. 2 is a view of a part which will be described.
In the figures A represents the stand or body of the machine. Upon and to this stand are secured and hinged two bars or arms D, D, the upper ends of said bars being formed to correspond with the shape of the torni of the crimp, the insides of said ends being made flat soas to tit snugly against the form F. The lower ends of the bai-s D D are hinged as shown at az, to the stand or frame.
Gr represents a rack bar which is so constructed upon its top F as to receive the form F. The top 'is provided with a groove in which the form rests. A variety of forms may be used upon the top F, any size being used at the will of the operator. L represents a pinion which gears into the rack upon the lower portion of the bar G, and which serves to operate said bar. The pinion L is secured upon a shaft which lies across the stand A. Upon the shaft of this pinion is secured a ratchet wheel H. I represents a lever connected loosely to the shaft just spoken of and which has attached to it a pawl J, which catches into the teeth upon the ratchet wheel H, as. seen in Fig. 1. The lever I and pawl J serve to move the ratchet wheel H in one direction while the ratchet or pawl c, secured to the frame or stand A,
nected to a treadle e, by means of the straps d, d. These clamps consist of two aws pivoted together and regulated by means of set screws la., 7L. Then the leather to be crimped is placed upon the form F the clamps a, a, catch it upon each side, and draw, and secure it down to the form.
P represents a plate with ratchet teeth which teeth serve to catch the treadle and hold it down when desirable.
E represents a clamp consisting of a bar with two arms which embrace the bars D, D, being pivoted to one of said bars at 2'..
N represents a set screw which passes into t-he end of the bar E and presses against a chuck R which intervenes between it and the bar D. IVhen the screw N presses against the chuck R it draws the two bars D, D, together and causes them to press at their upper ends against the leather upon the form. Then the screw N is loosened the chuck R may be raised and then the two arms or bars D, D, may be opened.
In using this machine the leather to be crimped is placed upon the form F. The clamps a, a, then take hold upon it on each side. and draw it down tight upon t-he form by the use of the treadle. The treadle is then secured down by the teeth on plate P. The bars D, D, are then brought up against the leather upon each side of the form and are pressed against it by means of the screw N. The leather is allowed to remain in this position as long as desirable. A tack or two may then secure it to the form and it may be removed to make room for another.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is* The employment of the rack bar G and the bars D, D, as constructed, the clamps a, a, the straps CZ, (Z, the treadle e, clamp E, chuck R and set screw N, arranged and connected to form a machine for crimping leather substantially as specified.
