BOX FASTENER.
No. 818,598. Patented Apr. 28, 1885,.
Nrrnn Freres 'i FRANK WILLIAM BEOKWITH, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO HENRY W. FAIRBANKS, OF SAME PLACE.
BOXmFASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 316,598, dated April 28, 1885.
Application filed February 5, 17885. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK W. BEoKwiTI-I, of Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvelnentsin Trunk-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specication.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in the construction of trunk clasps or fasteners.
The invention consists in the. peculiar construction and arrangement of a spring-ring secured to the trunk-lid, the top adapted to engage with and be retained in a locked position upon the casting secured to the body of the trunk, all as more fully hereinafter set forth.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a corner of a trunk provided with my improved fastener. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section on the line y y in Fig. l with the fastener closed. Fig. 3 is a cross-section on the line worin Fig. 2. Figs. 4, 5, 6, and 7 are details of the parts in perspective.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, A represents a suitable casting or hasp-iron, which is designed tov be secured to the trunk-top, upon the front side thereof, at any suitable point between the lock and the ends of the trunk.
Thishasp-ironAhas looselysecured init,in any convenient manner, a circular spring bail, B,` preferably formed of steel wire bent into the form of a ring with its ends free.
O is a casing designed to be rigidly secured in any convenient manner to the body of the trunk immediately below the casting A, as
4o shown in Fig. l. This casing O has formed upon it, at its upper end,.an outwardly-projecting boss or stud, D, which is circular in form, and ateach side of this boss D there is formed on the face of the casing an ear, c, slightly hook-shaped in cross-section. In the upper portion of the boss D there is formed a recess, b, which is designed to receive, when the trunk is closed, the hasp-stud d of the casing A. In the lower portion of the boss .D is formed another recess, e, which termi- 5o nates in a slot in the casing, and in this recess e is properly fulcrumed, in any convenient manner, the head of a hook locking-lever, E, the free end of which, when the device is in its locked position, lies between the flanged sidesf of the casing G.
In practice, when the top of the trunk is closed down and it is desired to lock it, the lever E is raised, so that the spring-bail B may be engaged freely with the hook of such 6o lever, as is shown in Fig l. By then depressing the lever, its fulcrum being above the lower portion of the bail, down between the side flanges of the casing O the ring is necessarily drawn around the stud D and between it and the hook-ears a, the construction of the ring and the manner in which it is secured in its casing being such that the ring is free to be compressed in this operation. The end ofthe lever being partially inclosed with- 7o in the case, as shown. it is not liable to be loosened or disengaged accidentally.
What I claim as my invention is# l. In a trunk-fastener, the bail-iron A, provided with a spring-bail, B, in combination with the casing C, and the hook-lever F, fulcrumed in said casing and adapted to draw the spring-bail down and around a stud projecting from the face of said casing, substantially as described.
2. Inatrunlr-fastener, the combination of the bail-iron A, provided with the springbail B, and bail-stud d, with the casing O, provided with the hook-lever E, and stud D, constructed, arranged, and operating substantially in the manner and for the purposes set forth.
3. In a trunk-fastener, the combination o the bail A, provided with the spring-bail B, and bail-stud d, with the casing C, provided 9o with the stud D, recesses b and e and ears a and j', and the hook-lever E, all constructed, arranged, and operating substantially in the. manner and for the purposes set forth.
