COMBINED MATCH-SAFE AND CIGAR-CLIPPER SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 816,466, dated April 28, 1885.

To whom it may concern.-

Be it known that we, EVERETT L. LAKE and LUOIEN S. GRANDALL, of the city of Syracuse, county of Onondaga, and State of New York,

have invented a new Combined Match-Safe and Cigar-Clipper, of which the following is a specification.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side view of our combined matchsafe and cigar-clipper, showing the safe closed. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same, showing the safe open and exposing more clearly the elements of the cigar clipper or shears. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section on the line 0001:, Fig. 1, and is designed to further expose the elements of the cigar-clipper, with the matchsafe both open and shut. Figs. 4 and 5 are detail views designed more especially to show the hinge and hinge-spring which are (30111- bined to form a locking device.

In the various figures similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

The object of our invention is to produce a combined match-safe and cigarclipper of comparatively few parts, symmetrical in form, and convenient of operation.

In its general features this match'safe and cigar-clipper consists of three pieces, which are, first, a safe or receptacle for matches, drawn up from one piece ofmetaLand so formed as to provide the cutting element of the cigarclipper and the hinge-spring of the locking de vice; second, a cover to said safe or receptacle, drawn up in like manner, and so formed as to provide the carrying element of the cigarclipper, the hinge, and the cam-faces of the hinge, which, in conjunction with the hingespring, form the locking device; third, a piece of wire so formed as to brace and strengthen the safe above mentioned, and also constitute the pintle of the hinge.

To enable one skilled in the art to manufacture our combined match-safe and cigarclipper, we will state more particularly that the safe or body of the receptacle B is drawn up by Well-known methods, preferably of brass. We do not confine ourselves to it, however, as it is practical to use other alloys and metals, and also to mold the parts of the safe in vul- 50 canite, celluloid, 820. as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and countersunk,

as shown at b, Fig. 3, so as to bring theinner face of the hole to an edge,,c. I This countersunk hole, brought to an edge, as described, constitutes the knife or cutting element of the cigar-clipper.

The cover 0 is made by being drawn up as suggested above, and then swaged or de pressed, as shown at a, Fig. 2, so as to partially inclose cars a and render the general lines of the safe symmetrical. A conical depression, d, is swaged in depression a, thus forming the carrying element of the cigar-clipper.

WVhen the safe is closed, the countersunk hole 12 and the conical depression d correspond, so that the small end of a cigar may be thrust through 1) into 61. The act of opening the safe causes at to carry the cigar against the thin edge 0 of the countersunk hole I) .in ears a, whereby the end of the cigar is clipped or sheared off. The conical pocket or depression d carries the cigar-clippings past ears (0, and then ejects them, they falling outside of the safe, as a matter of course.

WVhen the piece from which cover G is formed is trimmed, a rectangular strip or projection extending downward is formed at the back, and afterward so bent as to constitute theloop g of the hinge. This loop is formed over a mandrel having two flattened sides at right angles to each other, so that when finished and placed in position its inner sides, h h, constitute the two cam-faces upon which thespring- 8 tongue 6 impinges and operates to lock the safe when open and also when shut.

- It should here be stated that the upper edge of the back of the receptacle Bis slotted a short distance-downward in two parallel lines, e e, thereby forming the spring-tongue c. This tongue is formed at its end f so as to conform to the camfaces h h of the hinge-loop, as explained above. The operation of this springtongue upon the hinge loop, whereby the 5 cover of the safe is locked when open and also when shut, is manifest.

It should perhaps be stated that when the receptacle B is drawn up of brass or metal its texture is so solidified or compressed by the operation as to give sufficient temper to the spring-tongue e'; but if the safe were molded it would perhaps be necessary to provide a separate piece for e.

The cover 0 is serrated or roughened at s, so as to provide a convenient place on which to scratch matches. These serrations also aid in opening the safe, which operation is best accomplished by grasping the safe in the palm of the hand and pressing upward with the thumb at s.

The safe is provided with a clipper on both sides for two reasons: First, the operator is thereby enabled to use it either right-handed or left-handed; second, whenever a cigar is clipped in either shears the knife of the opposite shears serves to steady and support the cover of the safe, thereby holding the carrier rigidly to-its work and relieving the hinge from lateral strain.

It is'of course clear that the knife and carrier of the clipper maybe so transposed as to placetheforrner on the cover and the latter onthe pouch of the safe.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters'Patent, is-.

1. Ina combined match-safe and cigar-clipper, a receptacle having upwardly-extending ears provided with countersunk holes, as described, in combination with amovable cover provided with conical pockets or depressions arranged to con form to said countersunk holes and, in conjunction therewith, operate to shear provided witha cam-face, f, and a hinge-loop provided with the cam-iacesh h, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
