(Cl. 156108) This invention relates to apparatus for mounting sheets of adhesive material on statistical cards and more particularly to apparatus for mounting sections of adhesive coated material in register with openings formed in statistical cards or similar information bearing sheets or cards and to remove a portion of said adhesive sections simultaneously with the mounting thereof.
Many present day information storage systems utilize statistical or record cards with information recorded thereon by either a punch system or a magnetic system. It has been found to be very useful to combine with such recorded information visual information such as a section of film negative. Such a card is shown in Langan US. Patent No. 2,587,022 and sold under the trademark Filmsor-t. In mass production, record cards having an aperture therein and an adhesive sheet extending over said aperture are produced in automatic machines such as the apparatus disclosed in the Standish US. Patent No. 2,666,543. However, there are situations where a large number of such cards "are not needed, for example, where a single card has a film section which needs replacing or where a single card is lost and a replacement has to be made. This invention is directed to a hand apparatus for utilizing a single pre-apertured card wherein a sheet of adhesive material is mounted in the recessed area surrounding the aperture and the central portion of said sheet is die-cut out so that there is left a marginal area of adhesive sheet material to which a film section may be mounted and secured thereto.
One object of the present invention is to provide an apparatus wherein an adhesive sheet is mounted over an aperture portion of a card and the central portion of said sheet is removed in a single stroke of said apparatus.
Another object is to provide an apparatus of the above character wherein the alignment and interfitting tolerances of the various parts is greatly reduced.
Another object is to provide an apparatus of the above character which is simple in construction and light weight and which is designed to be operated by hand on a single selected card.
Another object is to provide a novel method for preparing an individual apertured card in condition for receiving a film section or other record carrying material.
A still further object is to provide a novel and useful semi-finished article which can be used to receive and retain a section of film or other record carrying material.
The above and further objects and novel features of the present invention will more fully appear from the following detailed description when the same is read in connection with the accompanying drawings. It is to be expressly understood, however, that the drawings are for the purpose of illustration only and are not intended as a definition of the limits of the invention.

FIG. 4 is an end elevational view of the apparatus taken along line 44 of FIG. 3.
Referring now to the drawings, there is shown in FIG. 1 a statistical card 10 of the well known type having an aperture 11 in one end with a recessed area 12 surrounding said aperture. In FIG. 2 there is shown a card 10 having an adhesive sheet 13 mounted in the recessed area 12 and having an aperture 14 of smaller cross-sectional area than the card aperture 1 1. In this manner a marginal area of adhesive sheet extends inwardly around aperture 11 so that when a film section is mounted in aperture 11 and pressed against the adhesive sheet it Will be securely retained therein.
In FIGS. 3 and 4 there is shown an apparatus comprising a base 17 having at one end thereof an upwardly extending punch frame 18. The adhesive sheet cutting and mounting mechanism 19 comp-rises a low-er die 20 and an upper die 21-. Die 20 is secured in any suitable manner, such :as by bolts, to the upper surface of base 17. Die 21 is secured in any suitable manner to a plate 22 which is held in a spaced apart and parallel relation to the base 10 by spacers 23. Die 21 has an aperture 24 extending therethrough having the same length and width as the greatest length and width of the recessed area 12 in the card 10. Die 29 has'an aperture 25 extending therethrough and having the same width and length as the aperture 14 in the adhesive sheet 13 mounted in the recessed area of card 10. A card holding mechanism 30 is mounted between plate 22 and base 17 and is designed to retain the apertured portion of card 10 in alignment with the dies 20 and 21. The card holding means comprisesa frame 31 having an aperture therein and a pair of parallel spaced apart longitudinally extending card guide retaining means 27 positioned on either side of the aperture. A pin 28 is secured to plate 22 and is slidably received in frame 31. In the same manner pin 29 is secured to the base 17 and is slidably received in frame 31. Pins 28 and 29 thus serve to guide frame 31 in its up and down vertical movement. Recessed areas are formed into the lower surface of the frame member for receiving one end of spring members 32. One recessed area is positioned at each corner of the frame. Each of the springs 32 are retained in a slightly compressed condition between the recessed areas and the top surface of base 17 thus urging the uppermost surface of the card guide retaining means 27 into contact with the under surface of plate 22. Secured to the top of frame 31 and between guide retaining means 27 is mounted the card guide 33 having at its outer end a flared opening 34 to facilitate the insertion of cards, and card guide 33 has an integrally formed upper and lower wall portion 35 and 36, respectively. The upper wall has an aperture 37 having a length and a width greater than the length and width of aperture 24 in die 21. The lower wall 36 has an aperture 38 having the same length and width as the aperture 11 in card 10. Thus as card 10 is inserted into the card-holder 3t) and fully seated with its forward end against the rear wall of the card holder, the aperture in the card is in vertical alignment with the apertures in the upper and lower dies.
A mounting mechanism 42 is mounted for reciprocal movement into the die aperature 24, and comprises a vertically extending shaft 43 which passes through a suitable opening in the upper end of the frame 18. A horizontally extending shaft 41 is suitably mounted in hearings in the upper end of frame 18 adjacent the aperture which receives the shaft 43. A toothed gear 44 is mounted on the shaft 41 and meshes with a rack 45 formed on the surface of shaft 43. The shaft 41 extends strip is moved to one side. is caused to enter the aperture 24 by the rotation of a' hand wheel 46, the rotation of which will cause shaft 43 to be moved vertically up or down. A plunger member 47 is secured to the lower end of shaft 43 and comprises a pair of steel plates 48 with a sheet of rubber 49 sandwiched therebetween. The plates 48 and sheet of rubber 49 have the same length and width as the aperture 24 in the upper die 21.
A roll of adhesive material 59 having a protective covering 51 thereover, such as glassine, is rotatably mounted on a support 52 which, in turn, is mounted on base 17. And idler roll 53 is rotatably mounted below the roll 50 together with a glassine separator roll 54 and a glassine feed roll 55. The feed roll 55 is mounted to be in frictional contact with the separator roll 54. Thus the glassine coated strip of adhesive strip material 50 is passed under the idler roll 53 and partially around the separator roll 54 where the glassine strip is separated from the adhesive sheet and carried around roll 54 and between roll 54 and roll 55. The adhesive sheet is pulled outwardly in the direction of the arrow as shown in FIG. 3.
Mounted to the top surface of plate 22 are a pair of roll supports 56 and 57. The supports are mounted parallel to each other with one on each side of the upper die 21. Each of the supports has a recessed upper surface which extends to one side thereof so that there is formed in effect a track to support the ends of a roller and to guide the roller. The horizontal level of the recessedsurfaces of the supports are even with the top of the die 21 so that when the roller is moved along the recessed areas the circumferential surface will contact the cutting surface of the die 21. It has furthermore been determined that a diagonal cut across the sheet is more effective than a out which is parallel to a longitudinal edge or at a right angle thereto. For this reason the parallel supports are positioned at an angle to the sides of the die 21 and to the strip 59. Thus as the roller is advanced at an angle, the strip is pressed between the roller and the die starting at a corner of the die,
and in a scissor-like fashion a sheet portion 13 is cut therefrom.
In operation the strip of adhesive material is separated from the glassine strip in the manner described and the strip with the adhesive facing downwardly is laid over the upper surface of die 21. The roller is rolled over the sheet so that the pressure of the roller causes the die 21 p to cut out a sheet member 13 having the exact dimensions of the aperture 24. This sheet 13 is retained at the top of the die 21 while the unused portion of the The plunger member 47 In this manner the marginal edges of sheet 13 are securely pressed into contact with the recessed area 12 on the card. Plunger 47 and the card and adhesive sheet are moved downwardly until the upper cutting surface of die 20 cuts through the adhesive sheet. As described above, the plates 48 of the plunger have a rubber plate 49 disposed between them such that these plates are v resiliently mounted to the end of shaft 43. When the lowermost of the plates 48 contacts the die 20 the resilient mounting of the plate will permit it to be squarely seated on said die to enable the adhesive sheet to be die-cut around the entire perimeter of the die. In this manner it is not necessary that the lowermost surface of'the head of the punch and the cutting surface of the die be retained in exact parallel relationship to each other at all times. Furthermore, the resilient mounting of the punch head permits the head to yield upwardly after contact has been made with the die to prevent damage to the die. As soon as plunger 47 is moved upwardly the frame 31 is moved upwardly by the springs 32. This upward movement strips the sheet 13 from the die 20. Hand wheel 46 is preferably spring loaded (not shown) so that upon releasing the same after applying the downward movement, the wheel will rotate in the reverse direction and carry the plunger upwardly under the power of the spring. One such arrangement would be to have a spring telescopically mounted over the shaft 41 and have one end secured to frame 18 and the other to either gear 44 or hand wheel 46. Thus as the hand wheel was being rotated to lower the plunger 47 the spring would be winding up. Additionally, such a spring would hold the plunger at its uppermost position.
Although the present invention is disclosed in the embodiment of a hand operated apparatus, it is to be expressly understood that the invention is not limited to said embodiment. Such an apparatus may be embodied in an automatically operated combination without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. For a definition of the limits of the invention, reference is bad primarily to the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. Apparatus of the character described comprising a yieldably mounted card support, a support for a blank of adhesive material positioned above said card support, a fixed die positioned below said card support for dieing out the central portion of said adhesive blank and means for moving said blank of adhesive material into contact with a card in said card support and for moving said adhesive blank into contact with said fixed die whereby the central portion of said adhesive blank is removed therefrom.

Apparatus of the character described comprising a frame, a fixed die on said frame, a movably mounted card support resiliently retained in a spaced relation from said fixed die, means to retain a sheet of adhesive material spaced from said card support, means to move said adhesive sheet into contact with the surface of a card retained in said card support and to move said card support and said adhesive sheet toward said die until said adhesive moving means and said die are in contact with each other whereby the adhesive sheet is mounted to said card and the central portion thereof is removed.
3. An apparatus of the character described comprising a first female die and a second female die retained in a spaced apart relationship, a card support reciprocally mounted between said dies and for movement toward and away from said first die, and a punch member mounted for reciprocal movement through said second die and into contact with said card support whereby said card support is moved toward said first die.

In an apparatus of the character described comprising an adhesive sheet supporting means having an aperture extending therethrough, a punch mounted for reciprocal movement through said sheet support aperture, a fixed die spaced apart from said sheet support, a card support means reciprocally mounted between said die and said sheet support and movable toward and away from said die, a portion of said card support positioned in the path of movement of said punch whereby when said punch is moved the full distance of its stroke in one direction it will pass through said sheet support and contact said card support and move the same toward said die.

In an apparatus of the character described comprising an adhesive sheet supporting means having an opening of the size and shape of a sheet to be supported thereby and extending therethrough, means for moving said sheet comprising a punch having a transverse section the same as that of said support opening and mounted for reciprocal movement through the same, a fixed die spaced apart from said sheet supporting means and having a transverse section smaller than said sheet support opening, and a card retaining means reciprocally mounted between said die and said sheet support for movement toward and away from said die, an aperture in said card retaining means having a transverse section smaller than 7 said sheet support opening and larger than said die Whereby said punch will pass through said sheet support opening and move said card retaining means until said die and said punch are in abutting relationship.
6. In an apparatus as defined in claim 5 wherein said punch comprises a support and a head portion resiliently mounted to said support whereby when said head portion abuts said die it will 'yieldingly move upwardly.

In an apparatus as defined in claim 5 wherein said adhesive sheet support means comprises a cutting edge at one end of the marginal portions of the walls of said opening whereby a strip of adhesive material may be superimposed over said cutting edge and a sheet cut therefrom and retained at said cutting edge.
8. In an apparatus as defined in claim 6 wherein the resilient mounting of said punch head exceeds the strength of the resilient mounting of said card retaining means.
9. The method of producing a record card comprising the steps of positioning an apertured record card in spaced relationship to a sheet of adhesive material and aligning the card aperture with said sheet, applying a downward pressure to an entire surface of said sheet for moving said sheet to overlie the cardaperture with the marginal edges of said sheet in contact with said card surrounding said aperture, continuing the downward pressure on the entire surface of said sheet by simultaneously moving said card and said sheet downwardly for pressing the marginal edges of said sheet into contact with the card surface surrounding the aperture and thereafter punching out the relationship to a sheet of adhesive material and aligning the card aperture with said sheet, applying a downward pressure to an entire surface of said sheet for moving said sheet to overlie the card aperture with the marginal edges of said sheet in contact with the card surface surrounding said aperture, simultaneously moving said sheet and said card downwardly while continuing the applying of said downward pressure on said entire sheet surface and resisting said downward pressure only at the marginal edges of said sheet and in an area located inwardly of said sheet marginal edges wherein the sheet marginal edges are pressed onto the card surface and the central portion of said sheet is cut out.

The method of mounting a strip of adhesive material around the marginal edges of anaperture formed in a record card comprising the steps of severing a section of adhesive material from a strip of the same, aligning the aperture in the record card with the severed section of adhesive material, bringing said severed section and said record card together to position the marginal edge areas of the severed section in contact with the corresponding edge areas of the card surrounding said aperture, applying pressure to the sheet and card to securely press the marginal edges of the severed section into contact with the card and simultaneously moving said card and said secured severed section toward and into contact with means for severing the central portion of said severed section, severing and removing the central portion to form an aperture in said section of adhesive material thereby adapting the card for mounting a film in the aperture of said card.

THE METHOD OF PRODUCING A RECORD CARD COMPRISING THE STEPS OF POSITIONING AN APERTURED RECORD CARD IN SPACED RELATIONSHIP TO A SHEET OF ADHESIVE MATERIAL AND ALIGNING THE CARD APERTURE WITH SAID SHEET, APPLYING A DOWNWARD PRESSURE TO AN ENTIRE SURFACE OF SAID SHEET FOR MOVING SAID SHEET TO OVERLIE THE CARD APERTURE WITH THE MARGINAL EDGES OF SAID SHEET IN CONTACT WITH SAID SURROUNDING SAID
