(Cl. 156530) This invention relates to apparatus for mounting sections of films on statistical cards and more particularly to apparatus for severing a section of film from a strip thereof and mounting the severed portion in register with an opening formed in a statistical card or similar informa tion bearing sheets or cards.
Many information storage systems presently in use utilize record cards having information recorded thereon either with a punched hole system or a magnetic system. It has been found to be very useful to combine with cards hearing such recorded information visual information such as embodied in a section of film negative. Such a card structure is shown in Langan U.S. Patent No. 2,587,022. These cards are produced in large quantities by utilizing automatic machinery such as that disclosed in the Standish U.S. Patent No. 2,666,543. There arise occasions, however, where only a single card needed to be produced. This invention is directed to a hand apparatus wherein a section of film is severed from a strip of film and is mounted in a pre-apertured card.
One object of the present invention is to provide an apparatus for severing and mounting a section of film in registry with an aperture in a card which is light in weight and operable on one card at a time.
Another object is to provide an apparatus of the above character having a novel die mechanism wherein the necessity for accurate alignment of the parts and manufacturing tolerances is greatly reduced.
A still further object is to provide an apparatus of the above character wherein the film strip is accurately aligned prior to the severing movement of the dies and wherein said stop moves to allow the unused portion of the strip to be removed.
The above and further objects and novel features of the present invention will more fully appear from the following detailed description when the same is read in connection with the accompanying drawings. It is to be expressly understood, however, that the drawings are for the purpose of illustration only and are not intended as a definition of the limits of the invention.
In the drawings, wherein like reference characters refer to like parts throughout the several views.
FIG. 1 is a side elevational view with certain parts broken away for purposes of clearer illustration;
FIG. 2 is a top plan view; and
FIG. 3 is an end elevational view of the apparatus with certain parts broken away for purposes of clearer illustration.
Referring now to the drawings, there is shown in FIG. 1 a base 10, a pair of upwardly extending supports 11, and a cover member 12. A female die member 13 has a lower blade 14 secured between supports 11 and a resiliently mounted parallel upper blade 15. A male die member 16 having a aperture extending therethrough is mounted for reciprocal movement between blades 14 and 15. Slots l7 and 18 in blades and 14, respectively, have a sufiicient width to permit the passage of the strip of film 19. After the strip 19 has been extended across blades 14 and 15 the forward movement of die 16 will sever the strip in two places and carry the severed film portion forward. A card-receiving slot 24 is positioned on the ill forward portion of the cover 12 and comprises a plate 20 spaced from the cover and having an aperture 21 in alignrnent with the aperture in die 16. A card stop 22 holds a card with its aperture in registry with the die 16. A guide 23 is positioned just above the slot 17 in blade 15 to guide the strip of film into the slots in the blades. The strip of film is generally rolled and the roll is mounted to any suitable support (not shown) on the top of cover 12. The film strip may be fed from the roll by hand into the guide 23 or by suitable feed rolls (not shown) which may be operated by hand.
The blade 15 is resiliently mounted at each corner by a bolt having its lower end secured to the die frame and its upper portion freely passing through blade 14. A spring is compressed and telescopically mounted between the head of the bolt and the upper surface of blade 14. In this manner blade 14 is constantly urged downwardly into contact with the upper surface of die 16. The force of the downward movement of blade 14 can be controlled by screwing each bolt into or out of the die frame.
The reciprocal movement of die 16 is effected through a mechanism comprising a yoke 30 pivotally mounted at 31 to supports 11 and having each arm of the yoke extending upwardly on each side of die 16. A pin 32 extends through die 16 and the upper ends of the yoke. A lever 33 is connected at one end to the bottom of the yoke and has its other end extending outwardly through the casing 12. Thus a downward movement of the lever will cause the die 16 to move forwardly. A spring 34 under tension has one end secured to the casing 12 and the other end to the bottom of the yoke so that the die 16 is retained in a rearward position.
A film strip stop plate 38 is positioned adjacent the lower surface of blade 14, extends over the slot 18 therein and serves as a stop for the forward edge of the film strip introduced into the slots in blades 14 and 15. Plate 38 is pivoted at 39 and is held in closed position over slot 18 by spring 40. A pin 41 has one end secured ot the side of the plate opposite from pivot 39 and has its other end freely passing through an aperture in the lever 33. The lower end of pin 41 has a head portion or similar obstruction to prevent it from passing through the aperture in lever '33.
A lamp 45 is connected to a switch and a source of electricity (not shown) and throws a beam of light through the aperture in die 16, a film extended over said die, and the aperture 21 in the card holding plate 20. In operation a card having an aperture therein and an adhesive sheet extending over at least a portion of the aperture is inserted into slot 24 with the adhesive surface facing the die 16. A film strip is advanced through slots 17 and 18 until the forward end strikes stop 38. The lever 33 is then depressed which, in turn, drives die 16 forward first severing the film strip in two places and then advancing the severed portion into contact with the adhesive surface in the card aperture. The forward surfaces of die 16 seat all four edges of the film section firmly against the adhesive sheet. The aperture in the plate 20 has a width and length equal to the width and length of the aperture in die 16. Thus as the end of die 16 is moved completely forward, the plate 2.0 backs up the adhesive sheet in the card while the film is being seated thereon. After the film section has been severed the continued downward movement of lever 33, as the die 16 advances the severed film to the card, will cause the stop 38 to be pivotally moved to release the small chip of film remaining in the slot 18.
Although the present invention is disclosed in the embodiment of a hand operated apparatus, it is expressly understood that the invention is not limited to said embodiment. Such an apparatus may be embodied into an automatically operated combination without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. For a defin tion of the limits of the invention, reference is bad primarily to the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. Apparatus for cutting a section of a predetermined length from a supply strip of material and mounting the same in an aperture in a card member, a fixed die and a spaced apart movable die, a reciprocable punch arranged for movement between said fixed and movable dies and corresponding in cross-section to the size and shape of the severed section, means to resiliently urge said movable die toward said punch whereby said dies are retained in contact with said punch, cutting edges formed on said fixed and movable dies and spaced cutting edges on said punch cooperating with the cutting edges on said dies, means to guide said strip of material over the cutting edges of said dies, means arranged in the path of movement of said punch for supporting a card against facewise displacement away from said punch and with the aperture in said card aligned with said punch, means for operating said punch toward the strip to sever a section therefrom and move the same into the aperture in the card.
2. Apparatus for cutting a section of a predetermlned length from an endless strip of material and mounting the same in an aperture in a card member, a fixed die and a spaced apart movable die, a reciprocable punch arranged for movement between said fixed and movable dies and corresponding in cross-section to the size and shape of the severed section, means to resiliently urge said movable die toward said punch whereby said dies are retained in contact with said punch, a slot having a length and width substantially equal to the width and thickness of said strip in each of said die members and in alignment with each other, a cutting surface on one edge of each slot and on spaced surfaces of said punch cooperating with the cutting edges of said slots, means to guide said strip material through said slots, means arranged in the path of movement of said punch for supporting a card against facewise displacement away from said punch and with the aperture in said card aligned with said punch, means for operating said punch toward the strip to sever a section therefrom and move the same into the aperture in the card.
3. Apparatus for cutting a section from an endless strip of material and mounting the same in an aperture in a card member, a die comprising a fixed blade and a mo-vable blade, a reciprocable punch having a transverse section the same as that of said severed section and arranged for movement between said fixed and movable blades, aligned transverse strip-receiving passages through said fixed and movable dies, means to resiliently urge said die members toward each other whereby said dies are maintained in contact with said punch, cutting surfaces formed on the edge of said fixed and movable blades and on spaced edges on said punch wherein said punch cutting surfaces cooperate with the cutting edges on said blades, means arranged in the path of movement of said punch for supporting a card against facewise displacement away from said punch and with the card aperture aligned with said punch, means to reciprocate said punch from a retracted position in which its cutting surfaces lie beyond said blade cutting surfaces to an advanced position in which the forward end of said cutting surfaces presses the severed section against a surface of a card.
4. Apparatus for cutting a section from an endless strip of material and mounting the same in an aperture in a card member, a die comprising a fixed blade and a parallel and spaced apart movable blade and having aligned transverse strip-receiving passages extending through said blades, a reciprocable punch having a transverse section the same as that of said severed section,
means to resiliently urge said blade members toward each other whereby said blades are maintained in contact with said punch, means arranged in the path of movement of said punch for supporting a card against displacement away from said punch and with the card aperture aligned with said punch, means to reciprocate said punch from a retracted position in which the forward end of said punch is spaced from the strip-receiving passages in said blades to an advanced position in which the severed section is pressed between the forward end of the punch and the card support and means to limit the movement of the strip into said strip-receiving passages.
5. Apparatus as defined in claim 4 wherein said means for reciprocating said punch comprises a yoke having one end yieldably secured to said punch, a frame, mcans rotatably mounted in said frame and securely receiving the other end of said yoke, means to actuate the rotatable movement of said last mentioned means, resilient means to rctain said punch in its retarded position.
6. Apparatus as defined in claim 4 wherein said means to limit the movement of the strip comprises a plate ex.- tcnding over the strip-receiving passage in said fixed blade.
7. Apparatus as defined in claim 4 wherein said means to limit the movement of the strip comprises a plate pivotally mounted to the outer surface of said fixed blade and resilient means to retain said plate over the stripreceiving passage therein.
8. Apparatus as defined in claim 7 comprising means to pivotally move said plate from said strip-receiving passage after said punch has been advanced beyond said passages whereby the unused portion of said strip is removed from said passage.
9. Apparatus for cutting a section from an endless strip of material and mounting the same in an aperture in a card, a die comprising a fixed blade and a spaced apart movable blade, each of said blades having aligned transverse strip-receiving passages extending therethrough, a reciprocable punch having a transverse section the same as that of said severed section, means to resiliently urge said movable blade toward said fixed blade and into contact with said punch, means to support a card against facewise displacement and with the card aperture aligned with said punch, means to reciprocate punch comprising a yoke having one end yieldably secured to said punch, a frame, means rotatably mounted in said frame and securely receiving the other end of said yoke, means to actuate the rotatable movement of said last mentioned means, and means to retain the forward end of said punch removed from said blade passages.
10. Apparatus as defined in claim 9 comprising means extending over said passages to limit the movement of said strip in said passages and means responsive to the movement of said punch to render said strip-limiting means inoperative.
1 Apparatus for severing a section from an endless strip of material and mounting the same in an aperture in a card member, a hollow die, aligned strip-receiving passages extending through opposing walls of said die, a punch mounted for reciprocal movement through said die, means positioned in the path of movement of said punch for supporting a card against displacement away from said punch and with the card aperture aligned with said punch, means to reciprocate said punch from a retracted position in which the forward end of said punch is spaced from the strip-receiving passages to an advanced position adjacent said card support means, and means to limit the movement of the strip into said strip-receiving passages.
12. Apparatus for severing a section from an endless strip of material and mounting the same in an aperture in a card member, a hollow die, aligned strip-receiving passages extending through opposing walls of said die, a punch mounted for reciprocal movement through said die, means positioned in the path of movement of said punch for supporting a card against displacement away from said punch and with the card aperture aligned with said punch, means to reciprocate said punch from a retracted position in which the forward end of said punch is spaced from the strip receiving passages to an advanced position adjacent said card support means to limit the movement of the strip into said strip-receiving passages, and means responsive to the movement of said punch into said position adjacent said card support to render said strip limiting means inoperative.

Claims (1)

1. APPARATUS FOR CUTTING A SECTION OF A PREDETERMINED LENGTH FROM A SUPPLY STRIP OF MATERIAL AND MOUNTING THE SAME IN AN APERTURE IN A CARD MEMBER, A FIXED DIE AND A SPACED APART MOVABLE DIE, A RECIPROCABLE PUNCH ARRANGED FOR MOVEMENT BETWEEN SAID FIXED AND MOVABLE DIES AND CORRESPONDING IN CROSS-SECTION TO THE SIZE AND SHAPE OF THE SEVERED SECTION, MEANS TO RESILIENTLY URGE SAID MOVABLE DIE TOWARD SAID PUNCH WHEREBY SAID DIES ARE RETAINED IN CONTACT WITH SAID PUNCH, CUTTING EDGES FORMED ON SAID FIXED AND MOVABLE DIES AND SPACED CUTTING EDGES ON SAID PUNCH COOPERATING WITH THE CUTTING EDGES ON SAID DIES, MEANS TO GUIDE SAID STRIP OF MATERIAL OVER THE CUTTING EDGES OF SAID DIES, MEANS ARRANGED IN THE PATH OF MOVEMENT OF SAID PUNCH FOR SUPPORTING A CARD AGAINST FACEWISE DISPLACEMENT AWAY FROM SAID PUNCH AND
