(Cl. 156-530) This invention relates to apparatus for mounting sections of films to record cards and more particularly to apparatus for severing a section of lm from a strip of film and mounting the same in an aperture in a record card.
Many of the present day business machines utilize record cards wherein information is stored on the cards either by a series of punched holes or by magnetic material selectively space-d thereon. It has been found useful to combine visual information on such cards in the form of lm or other photographic representations. Such a card structure is shown in the U.S. patent issued to Langen, No. 2,587,022. These cards are produced in large quantities by machines such as shown in the U.S. patent issued to Standish, No. 2,666,543. There are many instances, however, where it is desired to prepare only one card at a time. This invention is directed to such an apparatus.
One object of this invention is to provide an apparatus for severing a section of film and mounting the severed portion in an aperture of a card which is simple in construction and light in weight.
Another object is to provide an apparatus of the above character wherein the dies are of a novel construction.
Another object is to provide an apparatus of the above character having a novel card supporting structure.
A still further object is to provide an apparatus of the above character having a novel film strip holding means.
The above and further objects and novel features of the present invention will more fully appear from the followdetailed description when the same is read in connection with the 4accompanying drawings. It is to be expressly understood, however, that the drawings are for the purpose of illustration only and are not intended as a definition of the limits of the invention.

Referring now to the drawings, there is shown in FIGS. 1 and 2 a base 1t) supported at each corner by suitable legs. A pair of lower cutting blades 11 and 12 extend across the upper surface of base and are spaced apart a distance substantially equal to the width of the upper cutting blade 13. A spacer plate 14 having a thickness substantially equal to the thickness of a card 15, to which a iilm section 16 is secured, is positioned beneath the rear portion of each blade. -In this manner the forward portions of the blades are spaced from the base 10 and from a card receiving slot 17. The rear section of blade `11 is secured to `base 10 in any suitable manner such as by bolts. Blade 12 is pivotally mounted to base 10 by the eccentric adjustment 18. A blade spacer 19 having a length slightly less than the wide of upper blade 13 is positioned between the forward ends of the blades. An aperture extends through said spacer and through the forward end of blade 11. A pin 20 is secured at one end to the forward end of blade 12 and extends through the apertures and beyond blade 11. A spring 21 is telescopically mounted over the extending end of the pin and is held in a compressed condition between blade 11 and a transversely extending pin in the end of pin 20. Spring 21 through pin 20 constantly pulls the forward end of Iblade 12 toward blade 11 and spacer 19. Upper blade 13 is pivotally mounted at its rear end by a transversely extending pin, the ends of which are mounted in the sides of blades 11 and 12. A spring 22 has one end secured to the undersurface of base 10 andthe other end secured to the end of blade 13 so that the blade is constantly urged into an upwardly extending position. The blade 13 at its pivot point is always positioned between blades 11 and 12. By adjustment of the eccentric pivot point blade 12 can be moved toward blade 11 thereby moving blades 11, 12, and 13 together so that there is always a tight fit between cutting surfaces of these blades. As blade 13 is lowered it will gradually push the forward end of blade 12 away from blade 11 about the pivot point 1S so that there is a constant tension on the cutting edges between blade 13 and blades 11 and 12 during the downward stroke of blade 13. Blade 12 is retained from vertical movement by a spring clamp 25 which is secured to base 10 by a pair of bolts which pass through slotted openings in blade 12 and through apertures in clamp 25. Each bolt has an enlarged head to prevent it from passing through the apertures in clamp 25. Each lbolt also has a spring member telescopically mounted over the bolt and are compressed between clamp 25 and the upper surface of blade 12.
A plate 26 is secured to the upper surface of base 10 adjacent an edge of blade 11 and has its upper surface ilush with the upper surface of blade 11. The edge of plate 26 serves as a stop for the forward end of card slot 17. A plate 27 is `secured to the base 10 and adjacent the slot 17 and one edge of the plate serves as a guide for one longitudinal edge of a card inserted in the slot. Another card guide 28 having a surface positioned in operational alignment with the card guide edge of plate 27 and comprising -a right angle plate is secured to the underside of base 1t) and extending upwardly through a slot in said base. Guide 28 is secured in such a manner that it will be depressed into the slot upon the lowering of blade 13. Both card guides 27 and 28 are secured to jbase 10 in such a manner as to permit them to be adjusted toward or away from the card slot 17. A film guide 30 is secured to the top surfaces of blades 11 and plate 26 and extends in a parallel horizontal plane with the card slot 17.
A film clamp 31 is mounted to the top surface of blade 12 and in horizontal alignment with the lm guide 30. The iilm clamp comprises a lever 32, having a head 33, which is pivotally mounted on a shaft 34 which extends through the lever and has its ends rotatably mounted in blocks 35 on each side thereof. A resilient rod 36 has one end passing through the rear portion of lever 32 and its other end secured to the surface of base 10. Rod 36 constantly urges the head 33 of clamp 31 into contact with the upper surface of blade 12. This clamp serves to hold the last frame of a strip of film in proper position for severing the portion thereof carrying the image.
A recessed area 40 in the upper surface of base 10 is positioned in relation to the card plate 26 and guide 28 so that the apertured portion of card 15 will be in registry with said recess. A pressure pad 41 is pivotally mounted in said recess at the pivot point 42. The pivot point 42 is the end of a bolt which is threadedly mounted to the base 10 so that by turning the bolt the pressure pad can be lowered or raised to effect the most satisfactory contact for a card and lm section as it is compressed between blade 13 and pressure pad.
A card retaining member is mounted at one corner of card slot 17 and comprises an aperture in the base 10 and a ball 43 positioned therein. A leaf spring 44 overlies one end of the ball 43 and is secured at its other end to base 10. Ball 43 is constantly urged upwardly against the blade 11.
In operation a card having an aperture and an adhesive marginal area extending into said aperture is inserted into slot 17 with the adhesive surface `facing upwardly. One edge of the card is aligned into contact with the guides 27 and 28 and the end of the card abuts the end of plate 26. At the same time one corner of the card is inserted between ball 43 and the undersurface of blade 11 so that the card is frictionally retained in slot 17. A strip of film is unwound from a roll of film (not shown) and fed through film guide 30 until the desired portion of the film extends between blades 11 and 12 and the very `forward end of the strip is gripped between head portion 33 of film clamp 31 and the upper surface of blade 12. The blade 13 is then manually lowered until it is pressing against the pressure pad thereby severing the section of film and moving it into Contact with the adhesive sheet in the card aperture.
While my invention has been illustrated and described in detail, it is to be understood that various changes may be made therein by those skilled in the art without departing from the invention as defined in the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. Apparatus for severing a section from a strip of endless material and mounting the same in an aperture in a card comprising a base, a pair of spaced apart blade members each secured at one end to the base and having their other ends spaced from said base a distance greater than the thickness of said card a cutter blade pivotally mounted between said first mentioned blade members, a pressure pad positioned in alignment with said cutter blade and pivotally mounted to said base and having a surface dimension greater than the surface dimension of the aperture in said card, and means to position the card in said card slot wherein the card aperture is aligned with said pressure pad.
2. Apparatus as defined in claim l wherein said blade members comprise one blade being fixedly secured to said base and the other said blade pivotally secured at said one end to said base and means at said other end thereof to resiliently urge said blade toward the fixed blade whereby said cutter blade will move said movable blade away from the fixed blade as the same is pivotally moved toward the base.
3. Apparatus as defined in claim 2 wherein said cutter blade has a flat lower surface which is positioned in contact with the upper surface of said base at one end of its pivotal movement and wherein said card positioning means comprises a guide for engaging one edge of said card which is resiliently mounted whereby the same is moved out of card engaging position by said cutter blade.
4. Apparatus for severing a section from a strip of endless material and mounting the same in an aperture in a card comprising a base, a fixed blade and a movable blade spaced apart from said fixed blade and a cutter blade pivotally mounted between said fixed and movable blades, the lower surface of one end of said fixed and movable blades being spaced from said base a distance greater than the thickness of a card and forming a card receiving slot, a pressure pad positioned in alignment with said cutter blade and pivotally mounted to said base and having a surface area greater than the surface area of the aperture in said card, means in said card slot to position the card aperture in alignment with said pressure pad, and strip guide means for guiding said strip over the upper surface of said one end of said fixed and movable blades and in alignment with said card aperture and pressure pad.
5. Apparatus as defined in claim 4 comprising means to frictionally retain a card positioned within said card receiving slot. x
6. Apparatus as defined in claim 5 wherein said friction retaining means within said slot comprises a spherical member resiliently urged against the lower surface of one of said blade members whereby a corner portion of said card is retained between said blade and the spherical member.
7. Apparatus for severing a section from a strip of endless material and mounting the same in an aperture in a card comprising a base, a pair of spaced apart blade members and a cutter blade operatively associated with said blade members and pivotally mounted between said spaced apart blade members whereby said strip is transversely severed at two spaced apart locations, a card receiving slot positioned adjacent the lower surfaces of one end of said blade members, a guide means for guiding said strip means to a position extending over the upper surfaces of said one end of the blade members, and a strip holding means for holding the leading end of said strip against the upper surface of one of said blade members.
8. Apparatus as set forth in claim 7, wherein said strip holding `means comprises a lever pivotally mounted to the upper surface of one of said blade members, a film engaging lmember integrally formed at one end of said lever and a spring member secured to the other end of said lever whereby said lever is retained at either end of its pivotal path of movement.
9. In an apparatus for severing a section from a strip of endless material and mounting the same in an aperture in a card the combination of a base, a pair of spaced apart blade members and a cutter blade pivotally mounted therebetween, one end of said blades spaced from said base a distance greater than the thickness of a card thereby forming a card receiving slot, a pivotally mounted raised portion forming a portion of said card slot having a surface area greater than the surface area of the aperture in said card and in alignment with said cutter blade whereby the area of the card surrounding the aperture is supported against downward movement of said cutter blade, card guide means within said slot whereby the card aperture is aligned with said raised base portion, and strip guide means for guiding said strip over the top surfaces of the blade members and in alignment with a card aperture properly seated in said card receiving slot.

In an apparatus for severing a section from a strip of material and mounting the same on the surface of a card, the combination of a base, a pair of spaced apart blade members each of which has one end spaced from said base to form a card receiving slot, a cutter blade pivotally mounted between said spaced apart blades and movable toward and away from said card slot, and a pressure pad pivotally mounted to said base and positioned in alignment with the path of movement of said cutter blade.

Apparatus to sever a section from a strip of material and to mount the same on the surface of a card, the combination of a base, a pair of spaced apart blade members each of which has one end spaced from said base to form a card receiving slot and lwherein each of said blades has a longitudinally extending cutting edge thereon, a cutting blade pivotally mounted between said spaced apart blades for movement toward and away from said card slot and having cutting edges operatively engaging the cutting edges on said spaced apart blades, and a pressured pad pivotally mounted in the path of movement of said cutter blade.

Apparatus to sever a section from a strip of material and to mount the same on the surface of a card, the combination of a base, a pair of spaced apart blade members each of which has one end spaced from said base to form `a card receiving slot and wherein each of said blades has a longitudinally extending cutting edge thereon, a cutting blade pivotally mounted between said spaced apart blades for movement toward and away from said card slot, said cutting blade having a bottom surface transversely extending between said spaced apart blades References Cited in the file of this patent and a cutting edge extending along each longitudinal edge UNITED STATES PATENTS to operatively engage the cutting edges of said spaced and forming a portion of the card slot and positioned in 5 2,302,561 Libby et 31- N0V- 17, 1942 Connor et a1.
