ROLLER-SHELF BOOK-CASE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 316,241, dated April 21, 1885.

Be it known that I, WALTER N. CONANT, of Toledo, inthe county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have. invented a new and useful Improvement in Roller-Shelf Book-Cases, of which the following .is a full, clear, and exact description.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of a part of one of my improved roller-shelfbookcases. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of a part of the same,'partly in section, through the broken line 00 x m, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section of a part of the same, taken through the line 3 3 Fig. 2.

My invention relates-to improvements in book-cases; and it consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.

A represents the sides, and B the back, of a book-case. O are the vertical partitions that support the shelves. In the partitions G at each shelf are formed horizontal grooves D, in which are inserted cross-strips E, in which are formed bearings for the journals of the rollers F. The strips E hold the partitions G from warping. At the ends of the grooves D the partitions O are cut through to form recesses to receive the binding-bars G, the inner edges of which are recessed to form shoulders to fit into the end parts of the said grooves D, the recesses in the edges of the partitions G and binding-bars G being made of such' a depth that the outer edges of the bindingbars will be flush with the edges of the partitions C.

To the forward edges of the partitions G and the front binding-bars, G, are attached vertical bars H, against which the doors I, when used, shut, and to which are pivoted the front rollers, F. The rollers F F are made of a diameter-a little greater than the thickness of the strips E and binding-bars G, so that the books while being put into and removed from the bookcase will not come in contact with anything but the said rollers F F, and will thus be prevented from being rubbed or marred by coming in contact with the stationary parts of the book-case.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination, with the book-case frame A B, the rear rollers, F, and the vertical partitions O,having horizontal grooves D, of the cross-strips E, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby the said partitions are held from warping, and a firm support is provided for the roller-journals, as set forth.

2. In a roller-shelf book-case, the combination, with the casing A B, the vertical partition 0, having grooves D and edge-recesses, the cross-strips E, the rollers F, and the recessed binding-bars G, of the vertical front bars, H, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby the book-case is strengthened, and a support is provided for the front rollers, as set forth.

3. The combination, with the casing A B, the back rollers, F, the horizontal bindingbars G, and the vertical front bars, H, of the rollers F, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby the books are kept from contact with stationary parts of the bookcase, as set forth.
