Dec. 22, 1964 B. MORCHELES ETAL 3,161,922
DRAWING BOARD CONSTRUCTION Filed June '7, 1963 FIG. 3
FIG. 2
INVENTORS Bernard Morcheles Nunzio L. D'Agosfino ATTORNEY United States Patent 3,161,922; BRA? iNG BGARD (IGNSTRUCTIGN Bernard Morcheles, South @range, and Nunzio L DAgostino, Belford, NJL, assignors to Stacor Corporation, Newark, Ni, a corporation of New Eersey Filed June 7, 1953, Ser. No. 236,395 3 Claims. (Ci. 20-15) This invention relates generally to a drawing board or drafting board, and more specifically to an improved drawing board having a honeycomb core.
An object of this invention is to provide an improved drawing board that is durable, strong, light in weight, and warp free.
Another object is to provide a drawing board of improved frame construction reinforced by a honeycomb filler formed of resin impregnated paper.
Another object of this invention is to provide a drawing board constructed and arranged with means for readily accommodating various accessories, such as for example, drafting instruments, an adjustable lamp, electric pencil sharpener, and the like.
A feature of this invention resides in the provision that the drawing board can be readily fabricated of a frame of extruded structural members covered by space panels reinforced by resin impregnated honeycomb paper core for strength and likeness.
Another feature resides in the provision wherein the drawing board of the instant construction is rigid and virtually indestructible.
Other features and advantages will become more readily apparent when considered in View of the specification and drawings in which,
FIGURE 1 is a three-dimensional view of the drawing board constructed and arranged in accordance with the intsant invention.
FXGURE 2 is a fragmentary plan view of the drawing board of FIG. 1.
FIGURE 3 is an enlarged cross-section view taken along line 33 of FIG. 1.
FIGURE 4 is a cross-section view taken along line 44 of FIG. 2.
Referring to the drawings, there is shown a drawing board 1% which is durable in construction, light in weight, and positive in operation. Essentially the drawing board 19 comprises a frame 11 formed of light Weight structural members as for example of aluminum or the like. Accordingly, the frame 11 comprises oppositely disposed top and bottom structural members 12, 13 respectively to define the upper and lower longitudinal side edges of the board, and a pair of oppositely disposed similarly constructed end members 1%, 15 interconnected to and between the respective ends of the top and bottom members 12, 13 to define the transversely extending ends of the board.
As best seen in FIGS. 2 and 3, the upper longitudinal structural members 12 comprises a length of extruded aluminum having spaced front and back flange portion 12A, 12B integrally connected by a cross web 12C. Thus the upper frame member 12 define a rigid structural member that is substantially H-shaped in cross-section.
The lower member 13 disposed parallel to the upper member 12 comprises an extruded U-shaped member having oppositely disposed upper and lower flange portions 13A, 13B which are integrally connected a transverse web portion 13C. As seen in FIG. 3, the web portion 13C of the lower frame member is madesomewhat thicker in cross section than the respective flange portions 13A, 13B thereof and has formed therein a plurality of longitudinally extending dove tail grooves 16 arranged to receive corresponding dove tail tongues 17 formed along 3,161,922 Patented Dec. 22, 1954 the longitudinal edge of a pencil ledge or holder 18 as will be hereinafter described.
The respective ends 14, 15 of the frame are defined by extruded structural members which are likewise U- shaped in cross-section. Each is similar and defined by spaced front and rear flanges 19, 2t) interconnected by a web 21.
In the assembly of the drawing board 16 of the instant invention, the respective upper and lower structural members 12, 13 and the opposed end members 14, 15 are rectangularly disposed so that the ends of the upper and lower member are disposed in abutting relationship to the web portion 21 of the respective end members 14, 15. To accommodate the ends of the upper and lower members 12, 13 to effect abutment thereof with the web portion 21 of the respective end members 14, 15, it will be noted that the flanges 19, Ell of the respec tive end members 14, 15 adjacent the end portions thereof are cut away. In this manner the ends of the respective upper and lower members 12, 13 can be disposed in abutting relationship with respect to the extended web portion 21 of the respective end members 14, 15.
To secure the upper, lower and opposed end members 12, 13, 14, 15 in rectangular relationship, an upper and lower panel 22, 23 are secured to the respective flanges of the frame members.
As shown in FIGS. 3 and 4, the respective bottom flanges of the upper, lower, and opposed end members of the frame are provided with a marginal recess portion 25 adapted to receive the peripheral marginal portions of the bottom panel 23. Preferably the bottom panel 23 is made of a sheet material, as for example, aluminum or the like. As it is readily noted in FIG. 3, the accommodation of the backing member or panel 23 within the recessed portions 25 of the repsective flanges of the frame members renders the back of the board substantially smooth or flush. 1
The front panel 22, formed of sheet aluminum or the like, is secured to the upper flanges of the respective frame members. As shown, it will be. noted that the front flanges of the respective frame members are likewise provided with a recessed portion 24 arranged to accommodate the marginal portions of the front sheet or panel 22. In accordance with this invention, the front sheet or panel 22 and the backing sheet or panel 23 are secured to the respective frame members by a layer of suitable adhesive.
At a covering sheet 26 of linoleum, formica, rubber or the like is adhesively secured to the front panel 22 so as to provide a smooth drawing surface for the board. The arrangement is such that the drawing surface of the covering sheet 26 extends above the surfaces of the respective structured frame members. Thus the surface of the board is free of marginal obstruction. Thus a triangle can be moved over the surface of the drawing board during a drawing operation.
Sandwiched between the front and rear panels 22, 23 of the board is a honeycomb core 27 formed of resin impregnated paper. As shown, the honeycomb core is substantially co-extensive in area to that of the respective front and rear panel members 22, 23. The arrangement is such that the edges of the honeycomb core 27 are disposed substantially normal to the spaced panels. A suitable adhesive material 28 secures the core between the respective panel members. Accordingly the drawing board is formed as a rigid frame structure reinforced by a light weight paper honeycomb core spacer which renders the board warp free.
In accordance with this invention, a pencil ledge or holder 18 is connected along the bottom edge of the lower structural frame member 13. As shown in FIGS. 1, 2 and 3, the pencil ledge 18 or holder comprises of a sub stantially horizontally disposed C-shaped member. A flange portion 18A of the ledge is formed with a plurality of longitudinally extending dove tail lands or tongues 1'7 which are adapted to complement the dove tail grooves 16 formed in the outer edge of the lower structural frame member. The arrangement is such that the pencil holder 18 may be frictionally secured to the lower frame member by mating the dove tail tongue of the ledge with the grooves of the lower frame member as shown. In this manner, a firm frictional connection is had between the pencil ledge and the frame member of the drawing board. It will be noted that the pencil holder has less tongues than the frame member 13 has grooves. Therefore, the pencilholder 18 may be adjusted with respect to the frame member 13. With the pencil holder adjusted to its highest position, it will be noted that the outer flange or edge thereof will extend above the surface of the board, and thus functions as a stop to prohibit drafting instruments from sliding completely oif the board.
Means are secured to the upper edge of the board It to provide a base to which accessory drawing equipment, such as an adjustable lamp, pencil sharpener, and the like may be readily attached. In accordance with this invention, the base means comprises a block of wood 3% which extends substantially the length of the upper frame member 12. As shown in FIG. 3, the block of wood 3% is provided with opposed shoulder portions 30A to define a reduced portion 3013 which is adapted to be received between the flanges of the upper structural member 12. Suitable screw type fasteners 31 or the like are utilized to detachably secure the wood block 36 to the upper structural frame members 12.
If desired, the block 30 may be alternately secured by screw fastener (not shown) extended through the upper end of the wood block so as to be threaded into the web portion 12C of the upper frame member. 7
Thus, it will be noted that the wood block 30 becomes an integral part of the drawing board, and it can be readily detached therefrom by unfastening the fastener 31. Ac-
cordingly, accessory equipment can be detachably secured sively worn, that it can be replaced Without affecting the strength or rigidity of the overall board construction. The frame of the board is made of extruded metallic parts,
thus there are no edges to become frail or worn to produce slivers or splinters.
While the instant inventionhas been disclosed with" reference to a particular embodiment thereof, it is to be appreciated that the invention is not to be taken as limited to all of the details thereof as modifications and variations thereof may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of this invention.
