(Cl. 197153) This invention relates to a supplemental ribbon attachment for typewriters and the like for producing a plurality of inked copies to thereby avoid the necessity of using conventional carbon paper.

The invention comprehends a supplementary ribbon attachment which is adapted to be expeditiously attached to the bail rod of a typewriter and the like for disposing the supplemental ribbon in longitudinal relation with the typewriter ribbon for producing a plurality of inked copies of the type impressions produced by the type striking the typewriter ribbon and which attachment may be conveniently removed from the bail rod.

Another object of the invention is to provide a supplemental ribbon attachment which may be reversed in end to end relation for disposing different portions of the ribbon in position for producing the inked impressions on the copies.

Another object of the invention is to provide a supplemental ribbon mounting means which permits of the use of a relatively wide supplemental ribbon.

Still another object of the invention is to provide a supplemental ribbon mounting means which may be swung from an operative position to an out of the way inoperative position whereby the typewriter may be used in the usual manner with carbon papers for producing copies without interference by the supplemental ribbon or the mounting means.

Still another feature of the invention is the provision of a supplemental ribbon mounting means having arms with interengageable means carried by the arms and the supplemental ribbon for releasably mounting the ribbon thereon and which arms include spring means adapted to releasably mount the arms on the bail rod and on a cross bar for maintaining the supplemental ribbon in taut condition.

With the foregoing and other objects in view, reference is now made to the following specification and accom panying drawings in which the preferred embodiments of the invention are illustrated.

FIG. 1 is a perspective view of the upper portion of a typewriter showing an embodiment of the supplemental ribbon attachment mounted on the bail rod thereof and showing in broken lines the bail rod and attachment swung to the position for removing the paper.

FIG. 2 is a fragmentary perspective view of the sheets of paper with indicia indicating the arrangement thereof in the typewriter for receiving the inked impressions thereon.

The supplemental ribbon attachment is adapted to be 3,159,264 Patented Dec. 1, 1964 attached to the bail rod S of a standard typewriter T as shown in FIG. 1 of the drawings for producing a plurality of inked copies of the type impressions produced by the type striking the usual typewriter ribbon R. As illustrated in FIGS. 1 and 3 of the drawings, the first sheet A receives the type impressions from the typewriter ribbon R, the second sheet B is disposed against the back of the first sheet A and receives the type impressions on the back thereof from the supplemental ribbon 10, while the third sheet C receives the type impressions on the forward face thereof from the supplemental ribbon. This is shown by the indicia 1st Sheet, 2nd Sheet and 3rd Sheet on the sheets respectively illustrated in FIG. 2 of the drawings.

The attachment includes a supplemental ribbon holder or mounting means for removably disposing the supplemental ribbon in longitudinal relation with the typewriter platen N and at the rear of the typewriter ribbon R. The mounting means consists of oppositely disposed side arms 11 which are slidably and removably mounted at their upper ends on a cross bar 12 and at their lower ends removably mount the supplemental ribbon 16. The side arms 11 are of similar formation and each consists of a spring metal strip which is bent to provide an arcuate shaped loop 13 and a spring tongue 14 which is cut from the body of the strip and forms with the loop 13 a constricted throat 15 through which .the bar 12 is forced into engagement within the loop for slidably and removably mounting the side arms thereon. The tongue 14 is biased against the bar 12 and grippingly retains the bar therein but permits of the sliding of the side arms along the bar for maintaining the supplemental ribbon it) in taut condition.

Each of the side arms 11 is also bent centrally thereof to provide a loop 18 and a spring tongue 19 which is cut from the body of the strip and forms with the loop 18 a restricted throat 20 through which the bail rod S is forced to dispose the same within the loop 18 to thereby mount the ribbon holder or mounting means therefor into engagement with the bail rod. The spring tongue 19 is biased against the bail rod for releasably retaining the mounting means in set position thereon. The side arms 11 and the supplemental ribbon 10 are provided with interengageable fastening means such as the stud and socket means 21 and 22 for releasably mounting the supplemental ribbon thereon. For this purpose, the side arms are punched to provide the upstanding studs 21, while the ends of the ribbon are provided with the socket member 22 having spring lips 23 in the upper portion thereof which extends through a central opening in the lower portion 24 with the spring lips forming the socket opening for the stud and with the end of the ribbon secured between said upper and lower portions.

The socket members 22 are adapted to be snapped onto the studs 2]. at either end of the side arms 11 whereby the supplemental ribbon may be reversed in end to end relation so as to present different portions thereof in position for producing the inked impressions on the copies. As illustrated in FIG. 3 of the drawings the bottom edge of the supplemental ribbon is disposed slightly above the bottom edge of the typewriter ribbon R. Thus the lower portion of the supplemental ribbon is utilized in one arrangement thereof and when the same is reversed in end to end relation the upper portion thereof is utilized for producing the inked impressions on the copies.

It will be understood that the ribbon is impregnated with ink which will flow by capillary attraction into the used portions of the ribbon and by reversing the ribbon from end to end the same may be used for a long period of time with substantially the same degree of blackness in the inked impressions imparted to the copies.

As illustrated in FIGS. 7 and 8 of the drawings, a supplementary ribbon 30 may be employed which is relatively wider than the supplemental ribbon and when so employed the side arms 31 are provided with two studs 32, while the ribbon 30 is provided with two socket members 33 similar to the stud and

21 and 22 in the previously described form. The supplemental ribbon 30 is reversible in end to end relation so as to present different portions of the ribbon'for producing the inked impressions on the copies. 1

The bail rod S slidably mounts the usual rubber rollers P and at its ends the bail rod is afiixed to side bars M which are pivoted in the usual manner to the reciprocatory' carriage of the typewriter for swinging movement of the hail from the operative position shown in full lines in FIG. 1 of the drawings to the out of the way position shown in broken lines therein. The bail rod and supplemental ribbon moves with the reciproeatory movement of the carnage.

The sheets A, B and C are inserted in the typewriter in the usual manner about the platen N with the bail elevated. The upper portions of the sheets are spread apart and the bail moved downwardly to dispose the supplemental ribbon between the sheets B and C. The sheets are then inserted under the rubber rollers P of the bail rod. The first sheet A receives the type impressions from the type- .writer ribbon R, while the second sheet B is of onion skin or the like and receives the type impressions from the sheet C receives the type impressions from the supplemental ribbon on the forward face thereof. The thinness of the second sheet B permits the type impressions to be visible through the paper by osmosis of the ink. In this manner, the supplemental ribbon may be utilized for a large number of second and third sheet copies and when desired a new ribbon may be readily snapped onto the side arms or the supplemental ribbon may be removed and the arms swung to the out of the way position shown in FIG. 4 of the drawings for use of the typewriter in the usual manner with carbon paper. 7

, The invention has been illustrated in its application to a typewriter and the like but it is to he understood that the invention is applicable to all types of printing machines having a reciprocatory carriage and a pivotally mounted bail and while the preferred embodiment of the invention has been shown and described herein, the invention is not so limited but shall cover and include any and all modifications thereof which fall within the purview of the invention.

What is claimed is:

1. In a device of the character described having a reciprocatory carriage and a bail rod swingably connected with the carriage, the combination therewith of a supplemental ribbon mounting means including side arms, a cross rod, each of said arms having loops at its upper end disposed in engagement about said cross rod at the ends thereof and said arms having tongues biased against said cross rod releasably retaining said arms on said rod, a supplemental ribbon, a stud formed at the lower end of each arm, a ribbon holder secured to each end of said supplemental ribbon and having a socket receiving said stud for releasably mounting said supplemental ribbon on said arms, and said arms having loops intermediate the ends thereof disposed in engagement about said bail rod, and said arms having spring tongues biased against said bail rod releasably retaining said arms on said bail rod and disposing the supplemental ribbon rearwardly of the typewriter ribbon when the bail rod is in operative position. 4

'In a device of the character described having a reciprocatory carriage and a bail rod swingably connected with the carriage, the combination therewith of a supplemental ribbon mounting means including side arms, a cross rod, each of said arms having loops at its upper end disposed in engagement about said cross rod at the ends thereof and said arms having tongues biased against said cross rod releasably retaining said arms on said rod, a supplemental ribbon, a stud formed at the lower end of each arm, a ribbon holder secured to each end of said supplemental ribbon and having spring lips forming a socket receiving said stud for releasably mounting said supplemental ribbon on said arms, and said arms having loops intermediate the ends thereof disposed in engagement about said hail rod, and said arms having spring tongues biased against said bail rod releasably retaining said arms on said bail rod and disposing the supplemental ribbon rearwardly of the typewriter ribbon when the bail rod is in operative position.

Claims

1.
