UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IVES LYND, OFTROY, NEW YORK.
LAMP-WTICK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 315,429, dated April '7, 1885.
Application filed April 5, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IVES LYND, of Troy, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented a new and Improyed Lamp-Wick, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention consists in a wick constructed as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a front 'View of a ribbed knit lamp-wick. Fig. 2is a section thereof.
The wick a is knit in an ordinary knittingmachine, so as to form the straight longitudinal ribs 1) upon the sides of the wick. The forming of the ribs 1) forms also the intermediate passages, c,which extend the whole length of the wick and are entirely unobstructed, so that they form continuous duct-s or small tubes upon both sides of the wick, through which vWicks formed in this manner are very cheap,
and their capillary action is almost entirely free, always furnishing a copious supply of oil to the blaze; and although Ihave shown only flat narrow wicks in the drawings, it will be understood that the wicks may be knit in y i any formround or fiatand of any desired length'and width, and it will be understood, also, that these wicks may be used in oil-reservoirs for conducting the oil from the reservoir.
to the funnel to be lubricated. v
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The lamp-wick a, knit with the ribs b and passages 0, substantially as described.
' IVES LYND.
