Description

UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEIoE.
DANIEL FOREMAN, OF NAVARRE, OHIO.
CROSSCUT-SAWING MACHINE.
Specication of Letters Patent No.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL F oREMAN, of Navarre, in the county of Stark and' State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Sawing Wood; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which* Figure (1) is a side elevation, and Fig. (2) a plan view.
The nature of my invention consists in the employment and arrangement of such devices as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
- To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation.
(A) represents the frame; (B) the main or drivin wheel which is secured upon shaft (C) and operated by means of crank g(D) represents a crank shaft, and upon which is secured the drum or pulley (It) is a band which connects the driving wheel (B) with the drum (k) represents the saw frame which slides in a groove in a cross piece of frame (A). To the saw frame (lc) is securely fastened the saw (E) as fully represented in Fig.
(i) is a pitman which connects the saw frame to the crank shaft.
(e) is a roller to which is secured the holders f f.) Said holders are placed at a suitable distance apart and are for the purpose of holding the wood.
(d) represents a lever, one end of which is pivoted to the end holder. Said holder' is provided with a slot as fully shown in Fig.
(b) is a claw which is pivoted at its bottom to the lever (d) and near its top to holder (f) through the slot just referred to.
31,537, dated February 26, 1861.
It will thus be seen that as the lever is elevated or depresssed the claw will likewise rise and fall. The object of this claw is to hold the stick of wood firmly in its place while the machine is in operation.
(a) isa weight attached to the Iend of lever (d) for the purpose of forcing the wood against the saw.
is a guard for the lever and is provided on its inner side with a short pin for the lever to rest upon when not in motion.
The operation of my machine is as follows: Motion being given the saw by means of the crank, a stick of wood is placed in the forks of the holders, the weight (a) instantly forces the lever down thus drawing the wood in Contact with the saw, the claw (b) is forced down upon the stick of wood and effectually prevents it from rocking or otherwise moving in the holders. Then the stick is severed, the lever is elevated and the wood again adjusted, when the same operation is repeated.,V
This machine may be worked either'by hand or other' power, but it is especially designed for that of the former.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by with the rocking axle (e) for the purpose DANIEL FOREMAN.
