Description
U N ITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENJ. F. HOOPER, OF ALBANY, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND RANSOM BALLOU, JR., OF SAME PLAGE.
PRESS FOR SHEARING .AND PUNCHING.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 17,996, dated August 11, `1857'.
To all whom t may concer/n:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. HooPER, of the city of Albany, State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Arrangement and Combination of Mechanical Powers in a Press for Operating Punches or Shears; and I declare the following specication, with the drawings hereto annexed as part thereof, to be a full and complete description of my invention.
A, A is a heavy base or standard prolonged upward and outward into four parallel arms B B B B. Secured between these arms at each end, project downward two brackets C, C, the one for supporting and directing the movements of the punch P and the other of the shears S. The stems of these tools pass up through these brackets and above the top thereof each is divided into two ears a, a, across which lies a roller or pin at r, 1^.
Lying on the top of the brackets C, C, between B, B, is a strong square bar D, whose ends project through and beyond the ears, a, a. In each end of this bar a slot .7), b, is made of a size to admit the roller 1'. This slot is of any determinate length and is inclined downward at such an angle that its inner end at w (see diagram Figure 2) shall be as much lower than y its outer end from the line of motion y z, of the bar as the intended movement of the punches or shears is to be, e, being the measure of that movement.
The beam D is kept in its place by the rollers R R ,placed in the extremev upper corners of the arms B, B, as near to the ears a, c, of the punch and shears as may be, in order to relieve the strain upon the beam, when pressed upward by strain on the tools.
The beam D is moved backward and forward in this way: To its lower side are attached at right angles to it two cross pieces E, E, parallel with each other and having a space between them into which the pin G can move freely as in a slot. The pin G is attached near the periphery of a horizontal disk or wheel W fixed upon a shaft H passing downward through the center of the base. This pin must be so adjusted that its extreme diametrical motion shall be equal to the space to be traversed by the roller r in the slot le of beam D, to which shaft the driving power is applied.
The operation of the machine is simple. The revolution of the disk (or crank) W by its pin Gr operating upon the cross pieces E E impels the beam D backward and forward which motion by the operation of the slot 7c upon pin r propels the punch and shears vertically with' a power proportional to the difference between the circuit of the pin Gr and the distance e, w.
rIhe advantages of this arrangement of machinery are that it permits the punch and shears to be placed at convenient working distances by the proportioning of the beam without the use of additional gearing. It further gives the tools a vertical movement so that they can be operated on the same plane. Also it permits the communication in the simplest way of the motive power, by means of the vertical shaft and bevel gear under the floor of the workshop, removing all inconvenient appendages from the scene of operations.
I claim- The employment of the beam D having an inclined slot in its extremities carrying the pins on which the punch and shears are suspended, as described, and operated in the manner substantially as set forth in the within specification.
BENJ. F. I-IOOPER.
