Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN A. TAPLIN, OF FISHKILL, NEW YORK.
sAWMII-.L-Doe.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 16,8238,` dated March 24, 1857.
To all 'whom t may concern Be it known that I, JOHN A. TAPLIN, of
Fishkill, in the county of Dutchess and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sawmill-Dogs; and
I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, refer ence being had to the annexed drawing, l0 forming part of this specication, in which- Figure l is a top view, showing dogs in operation. Fig. 2 is a side view. Fig. 3 is an end elevation.
Similar characters of reference in the several gures denote the same part.
The nature of my invention consists in forming t-he dogs of two arms upon a rock shaft attached to the head block; so that the inner arms may hold the log by being driven into its end, and the outer arms be .made to hold the log by embracing it, as will be hereinafter described, the object being the holding of long timber in short portable saw mills.
My invention further consists in placing the traversing rollers under the head and tail block of the mill in order to enable the carriage to conform to any inequality of the ways.
In the drawing D is the dog made up of the rock shaft a and arms b and c, the shaft a being attached to the block by straps CZ, so as to turn therein. In sawing long timber the arms b are driven into the end of the log and held by wedges f. The log L passes through arms c on the other block and is held by wedges between these arms and the sides of the log. When the portion of the log exposed to the action of the saw is cut, it is secured between arms c on the head block, and a new portion of the log placed in position for the cut.
R R are the traversing rollers placed direct under the head and tail blocks H H, serving to permit the carriage to conform to inequalities of the traversing ways.
I claim- The double arm rocking dogs, constructed, arranged and operating in connection with wedges as, and for the purpose set forth, in combination with the traversing carriage as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name before two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN A. TAPLIN.
