Mich., assignors to 'General Motors Corporation, Dedroit, Mich., a corporation of Delaware Filed Get. 16, 1962, Ser. No. 230,917 3 Claims. (Cl. 16-142) This invention relates to a door hinge, check and hold open, and more particularly to an improved door hinge, check and hold open Vfor a vehicle body door.
One feature of the invention is that it provides an improved door hinge, check and hold open. Another feature of this'invention is that it provides a vehicle body door hinge check and hold open including a pair of pivotally interconnected hinge members engageable with each other in door open position to provide a hinge cheek, with one of the hinge members having a free end portion provided with at least one cam p rojection adapted to engage a detent member cam projection in door check position to provide a yieldable hold open, with the detent member being movably mounted on the other hinge member and having its cam projection located in the path of movement of the free end portion cam projection for engagement therewith; and a further feature of this invention is that the free end portion is provided with a pair of cam projections successively engageable with the detent member cam projection to provide a two-stage hold open. Still another feature of this invention is that it provides a vehicle body door hinge check and hold open including a pair of pivotally interconnected hinge members engageable with each other in door open position to provide a hinge check, with one of the hinge members including a free end portion provided with a cam projection engageable with a cam projection of a detent member to provide a yieldable hold open, with the detent member being pivotally mounted on the other hinge member and being urged by biasing means toward the path of movement of the free end portion of the hinge member, and with the detent member cam projection being located in the path of movement of the free end portion cam projection by engagement of the detent member with the other hinge member against the action of the biasing means.
These and other features of the invention will be readily apparent from the following specification and drawings wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a fragmentary horizontal section through a portion of a vehicle body having a door mounted thereon for movement between open and closed positions by a door hinge, check and hold open according to this invention, with the door being shown in closed position;
FIGURE 2 is a view similar to FIGURE l with the door in open position;
FIGURE 3 is a view taken generally along the plane indicated by line 3 3 of FIGURE 2;
' FIGURE 4 is an enlarged sectional view taken generally along the plane indicated by line 4-4 of FIGURE 3;
FIGURE 5 is a view similar to FIGURE 4 showing another embodiment of this invention; and
FIGURE 6 is a perspective view of a portion of the door hinge, check and hold open of this invention.
Referring particularly to FIGURE 1 of the drawings, a vehicle body designated generally at 1t) includes an irregularly shaped pillar wall or jamb face 12 juxtaposed to the jamb face or wall 14 of a door 15 when the door is in closed position as shown. Door 15 includes an outer panel 16 and an inner panel 18 which are joined adjacent one edge of the door by the wall 14 which is welded to the inner panel and hem iianged to the outer panel. A weatherstrip 22 is mounted on Wall 14 for sealing engagement with jamb face 12. Door 15 is mounted on body 10 Patented Oct. 20, 1964 for movement between open and closed positions by a. door hinge, check and hold open according to this invention.
As seen in FIGURES 1, 2 and 3, the door hinge, check and hold open includes an elongated male hinge strap 24 provided with a mounting ange 26 bolted to a support plate 28 on the wall 14 of the door. A generally L-shaped female hinge strap 30 includes a mounting portion 32 received within a generally U-shaped mounting bracket 34 which is welded to the jamb face 12 v,of body 10. Strap 30 is adjustably secured to bracket 34 by partially threaded bolts 36 which extend through slots in the bracket into partially tapped apertures provided in portion 32. Strap 30 further includes a bifurcated end 38 having apertured legs 40 and 41, FIGURE 3, which are pivotally connected to an intermediate portion of strap 24 by a hinge pin 42. An extension of strap 24 from the pivot thereof terminates in a free end portion 44 provided with a cam projection 46.
A generally U-shaped detent member 4S has the legs thereof pivoted at 50 to opposite edges of strap 30 and includes an angular flange 52 provided with a cam projection 54. Upper and lower coil tension springs 56 have one end'thereof hooked to hinge pin 42 and are inserted at their other ends through apertures provided in the intermediate portion of the detent member 48, to bias the detent member clockwise as the parts appear in FIG- URE 1. Limiting tabs 58 bent from the legs of the detent member engage legs 4t) and 41 to locate the detent member in the position shown in FIGURE 1.
As the door 15 is opened, hinge strap 24 and the free end portion 44 thereof pivot about pin 42 until one side of portion 44 abuts the portion 32 of hinge strap 30 to provide a positive door check or stop. As seen in FIG- URE 4, the flange 52 lies in the path of movement of free end portion 44 so that the free end cam projection 46 will cam over and behind the detent member cam projection 54 to hinge check position, against the action of springs 56, and will be resiliently held therein, thus achieving a yieldable hold open. As the door is closed the free end portion cam projection 46 rides over the detent member cam projection 54 to displace the detent member against the action of springs 56 and disengage therefrom to allow further unimpeded swinging movement of the door to closed position.
In a second embodiment of the invention shown in FIG- URE 5, the free end portion 44 is widened to include a pair of cam projections 60 and 62, and the portion 32 of strap 30 is slightly recessed t0 receive the edge of the free end portion in hinge check position. Movement of the door 15 to fully open position will cause successive engagement of the free end cam projections 6i) and 62 with the detent member cam projection 54 so as to provide a two-stage yieldable hold open at approximately 50 and 70 degrees of door opening movement.
Thus a new and improved door hinge, check and hold open is provided.
We claim: p
