UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIC OHRISTOPH F. MOELLER AND-JULIUS w. MANGER, or NEWARK, N. J.
TORCH.
ESPECIPICATIQN forming part of Letters Patent No. 315,317,dated April '7, 1885.
Application t lled June 27, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, CHRIs'rOPH F. MoEL- LER and J ULIUs W. MANGER, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Torches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to an improved torch for processions and celebrations of all kinds, which can be conveniently reduced in size for shipping, and in which the dripping of oil from the wick is prevented.
This invention consists of a torch composed of two telescoping main tubes, the outer one of which is provided with a handle at the lower end and a collar at the upper end, while the inner tube containing the oil reservoir is guided in the outer tube by said collar and a packing at its lower end. The wick-tube is provided at its lower end with an inwardlybent tooth or serration, by which the wick is securely held in position.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation; Fig. 2, a vertical central section, both figures showing the torch extended and ready for use. Fig. 3 is a vertical central section of the torch, .showing the main tubes telescoped one into the other. Fig. 4 is a detail vertical central section of the wicktube and its drip-cup.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A A in the drawings represent the two hollow main tubes of which our improved torch is composed. The tubes A A are preferably made of sheet metal, so as to bestrong and durable. The inner tube, A, forms the fount or reservoir for the oil. The outer tube, A, is made of asomewhat larger diameter than the inner tube, A, so that the latter can slide or telescope readily in the outer tube, A. A handle, A", is attached to the lower end of the outer tube, A, by which the torch is conveniently held and carried. The inner tube, A, is guided in the outer tube by means of a col: lar, a, at the upper end of the tube A, and by means of a packing, b, that is placed around the lower end of the. inner telescoping tube,
.A, and retained between fixed wire shoulders or collars b, as shown clearly in Figs. 2 and 3. The collara and packing I; serve to steady the motion of the inner tube, A, and to support it rigidly in position when drawn out of the main tube A. When the inner tube, A, is pushed into the outer tube, A, it is stopped by the lower edge, a, of a cap, A
which is soldered or otherwise attached to. the
upper end of the inner tube, A. A is attached awick-tube, O, which is screwed into a threaded socket at the upper end of the cap A. The wick-tube G is provided at the To the cap lower end with one or more inwardly-bent" teeth or serrations, d, which engage the wick' D, so as to hold the same in position and prevent itfrom sliding downin the wick-tube when thetorch is dropped on the floor. For adjusting the wick the wick-tube G is removed from its socket, after which the wick can be read ily adjusted by releasing the wick from the in- H wardly-bent tooth or serration d. The wickt-nbe G is further provided with an exterior drip-cup, E, which communicates bya small opening, 6, at'its lower end with the interior of the oilfonnt that is arranged in the sliding tube A. The drip-cup E takes up the oil,
that would otherwise run down along the wick-tube and inner tube, A, and conducts'it back to the oil-fount, so as to prevent the soil-,
ing of the clothes by the drip of oil from the 8 wick-tube.
The torch can be conveniently shipped by telescoping the tubes together, and forms a clean and handy torch for campaign-clubs and other purposes.
Having thus described our invention, we claim'as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination of an outer tube, A,
having a handle, A, at the lower end and a collar, (4, at the upper end, a telescoping in ner tube, A, containingthe oil-reservoir, and
having a packing, b, at the lower end, and a cap, A at the upper end, substantially as set In testimony that we claim the foregoing as l our invention we have signed our names in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
