(Ci. 263-33) particular apparatus may depend on whether it is collected from ageographic area predominantly commercial, industrial or residential, and it may also depend upon 'local`practices, as for example, the practice of collecting certain types of rubbish separately of food wastes. It is,
1 therefore, a primary object of the present invention to provide an incinerator'kiln assembly of Components that may be assembled in a variety of arrangements each providing a somewhat different approach to burning in order to achieve eflicient and complete combustion of any particulartype of refuse material.
It is another object of the present invention to provide an incinerator kiln assembly which can be changed after initial erection, as for example, when there is a change in v the nature of refuse to be burned, to seek improved and more complete burning. v
'It is still another object of the present invention to provide an incinerator kiln assembly in which standardized Components of a limited number of types may be easily and i quickly removed or 'replaced for maintenance and repair purposes.
Incorporated in the description to follow will be a description of incinerating methods andincinerator kilrs having impervio'us zones and zones that admit air to excite burning as well as particular arrangements of such zones, such as are disclosed andclaimed in the United States patent application of Ervin J. Klovers and Heinz W. Winter, Serial No. 278324, filed May 6, 1963, which along with the present invention, have been assigned to a common assignee. However, the aforesaid invention of Klovers and Winter did not provide for achieving the aforementioned objects of this invention and features of the present invention directed to achieving such objects are intended to be pointed out in the appended claims. However, a preferred Construction for a kiln embodying the present invention may be assembled from two types of Components that will now be briefly described. One type of component is an open end cylinder With an impervious cylindrcal wall. The other type has a plurality of louvers arranged in a ring to define a cylindrcal section with radial openings extending along substantially the 'entire length. Each Component (of both types) has an annular ring on each end of the Component. Each such ring on the upstream end of a section (i.e., the end intended to be nearest the kiln feed end) is provided with a configuration that is compatible to mate With a ring on the downstream end of any section of either type. (The downstream end is the end intended to be nearest the kiln discharged end.) For example, one configuration in- ,United States Patent O 3,15Z,796 i Patented Oct. 13, 1964 a recess and a ridge along the inner edge of a ring fits into the recess to form the desired joint.
With the features so far described, sections can be arranged and assembled in various manners which will be described with reference to the drawings, in which: t

` Kiln 1 is itself an assembly of five sections of two types. One type is labeled A anda second type is labeled B. Sections labeled A, which in FIG. l are the first, third and 'fifth sections from the feed end, each have an impervious cylindrcal wall 10 lined with heat reflectors 11, which may be refractory brick or tile.
Sections labeled B may best be described with additional reference to FIG. 2. These sections have a plurality of louvers 14 arranged in a ring 15 between a pair of annular rings 16, 17. Defined between each of the louvers 14 i a radial opening 18 extending for substantially the full aXial length'of the section. Surrounding'the' ring 1'5 is' 'a windbox Zt).
Windbox 20 comprise's outer wall structure'zl, which defines an inlet passage 22for admitting air, internal wall structure 23, and a plurality of dampers 24-31. Wall structures 21, 23, along with dampers 24, 27 and 26, define an area 35. Wall -structures 21,23 along with dampers 24, 25 and 28 define an area 36. And wall structure 21 and the sides of dampers 25 and 26 opposite areas 35 and 36 define an area 37. Manipulation of these dampers will vary the openings and therefore the flow of air through each of these areas and into ring 15 from such locations. A screw 40 is provided in the bottom of each windbox 20 for removing rany refuse material or ashes that fall through openings 18 in ring 15.
Referring to FIG. 3, each component (of both type A and type B) has an annular ring 50 or 51 on each end of the component. Each such ring 50 on the upstream end of a section (.e., the end intended to be nearest the kiln feed end) is provided with a configuration that is compatible to mate with a ring 51 on the downstream end of any section of either type. (The downstream end is the end intended to be nearest the kiln discharge end.) The configuration of ring 50 includes an annular ridge 52 proi jecting axally along the radially nner edge of the ring 50.
cludes an annular ridge projecting axially along the ra- The mating ring 51 has the same sort of an annular ridge 53 but ridge 53 projects axially along the radially outer edge of the ring 51. The ring 51 having the ridge 53 along its outer edge therefore defines a recess 54, and ridge 52 along the inner edge of a ring 50 fits into the recess 54 to form the desired joint.
It is important to note in FIG. 3 that if the section B, shown between two A sections, were removed, the downstream ring 51 of the section A on the far left would be A power operated force feeder (not' shown) may be used to ram material from chute 7 into r i 3,152,79e
compatible with and mate with the upstream ringstl of the section A on the right. Likewise, the section A on the right, shown between two B sections, could be removed and downstream ring 51 of the section B on the right wouldbe compatible with and mate with the upstream ring 50 of the section B on the far right.
Thus with the construction described for the A and B sections, it is possible to arrange and assemble three A sections and two B sections in the sequence A-B-A-B-A, as shown in FIG. 1. This particular sequence is known to the present inventor as being disclosed and claimed in the aforementioned application of Klovers 'and Winter. However, for types of refuse material that do not burn satisfactorily with that sequence, the present invention provides flexibility that provides for the arrangements shown 'in FIGS. 4 and 5. According to FIG. 4, a central B section substitutes for the central A section shown in FIG. 1,

A conversion from the arrangement of FIG. 1 to the arrangement of FIG. 5 does not'- change the overall length of kiln 1, but for this arrangement the support for roller assembly 3 must, of course, be relocated according to the illustration. o
From the foregoing it will be understood that the present invention is possessed of unique advantages that achieve the objects of the invention. Modifications and equivalents of the disclosed concepts such as readily occur to those skilled in this art are intended to be included within the scope of this invention andthus the scope of this invention is intended to be limited only by the scope of appendedclaims. e
The embodiments of the invention in which an exclusive property or privilege is claimed are defined as follows:`
' ,1. A generally horizontal rotary kiln assembly comprising a plurality of components of a first type and at least one component of a second type, said first type being cy- 4 lindrical with open ends and `an impervious cylindrical wall, said second type having a plurality of louvers arranged in a complete ring to define a cylindrical section with radialopenings around, the entire periphery thereof and along the entire length thereof, said components being all provided with compatible annular end fiange members which each define a circle transverse to the central axis of said kiln assembly, and said components being arranged in aXial alignment and assembled with adjacent joints 'being detachably connected together to define a kiln having said plurality of said components of said first type and said at least one said component of said second type connected together in a predetermined axally extending order of occurrence.
2. A generally horizontal rotary kiln assembly comprising a plurality of components of a first type and at least one Component of a second type, said first type being cylindrical with open ends and an impervious cylindrical wall, said second type having a plurality of louvers arranged in a complete ring to define a cylindrical section with radial openings around the entire periphery thereof and along the entire length thereof, each of said components having on a first end thereof a first annular ring transverse to the central axis of said kiln assembly, said first ring having a first annular ridge projecting axially' along the radially outeredge of said first ring to define a recess and a first pair. of annular radially projecting surfaces, each of said components having on the end opposite said first end a second annular ring parallel to said first ring, said second ring having 'a second annular ridge projecting axially along the radially inner edge of said secondring in aXial alignment .with said recess in said `first ring, said 'second ridge defiring a second pair of annular radially projecting surfaces parallel to said first pair of surfaces, and said components being arranged in axial alignrnent and detachably assembled with each adjacent pair of said components having a said second ridge fitted into a said recess and both of a said first pair of annular surfaces in surface contact with both of a said second pair of annular surfaces'.

Claims (1)

1. A GENERALLY HORIZONTAL ROTARY KILN ASSEMBLY COMPRISING A PLURALITY OF COMPONENTS OF A FIRST TYPE AND AT LEAST ONE COMPONENT OF A SECOND TYPE, SAID FIRST TYPE BEING CYLINDRICAL WITH OPEN ENDS AND AN IMPERVIOUS CYLINDRICAL WALL, SAID SECOND TYPE HAVING A PLURALITY OF LOUVERS ARRANGED IN A COMPLETE RING TO DEFINE A CYLINDRICAL SECTION WITH RADIAL OPENINGS AROUND THE ENTIRE PERIPHERY THEREOF AND ALONG THE ENTIRE LENGTH THEREOF, SAID COMPONENTS BEING ALL PROVIDED WITH COMPATIBLE ANNULAR END FLANGE MEMBERS WHICH EACH DEFINE A CIRCLE TRANSVERSE TO THE CENTRAL AXIS OF SAID KILN ASSEMBLY, AND SAID COMPONENTS BEING ARRANGED IN AXIAL ALIGNMENT AND ASSEMBLED WITH ADJACENT JOINTS BEING DETACHABLY CONNECTED TOGETHER TO DEFINE A KILN HAVING SAID PLURALITY OF SAID COMPONENTS OF SAID FIRST TYPE AND SAID AT LEAST ONE SAID COMPONENT OF SAID SECOND TYPE CONNECTED TOGETHER IN A PREDETERMINED AXIALLY EXTENDING ORDER OF OCCURRENCE.
