SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters'Patent No. 315,257, dated April 7, 1885.

To all wiz/0m, it may concern,.-
Beit known that I, WILLIAM H. DILLoN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Glasgow, in the county of Barren and Stateof Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pumps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my iniproved pump. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view of the same, showing it in position for operation. Fig. 3 is a horizontal or transverse sectional view taken on the line x :v in Fig. 2. Fig. 4. is a perspective view of the plunger removed from the cylinder, and with parts broken away for the purpose of illustrating the invention more clearly. i

This invention relates to pumps; and it has for its object to produce a pump which shall possess superior advantages in point of simplicity, durability, and general efficiency.
With these ends in view the invention consists in the improved construction and arrangement of parts, which willbe hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
-In the drawings hereto annexed, A designates the cylinder or outer casing of my irnproved pump, which is provided at its lower end with an upwardly-opening valve of suitable construction, (designated by letter B.) rlhe upper end of the cylinder A is open, and in it slides vertically the plunger C. The said plunger, as will be seen in the drawings hereto annexed, consists of a cylinder, D, fitting nicely in the outer cylinder,A, between which and the said plunger suitable packing may be provided when desired. The lower end of the plunger-cylinder D is provided with an upwardly-opening valve,'E, of any suitable construction, and its upper end is provided with the tubing F, extending upwardly to the top of the well, where it may be provided with a suitable spout or goose-neck.
G is a smaller cylinder, fitted to slide in the plunger-cylinder D, and provided at its lower end with an upwardly-opening valve, H, and I at its upper end with a cross-bar, I, between which and the upper end of the plunger-cylinder a coiled spring, J, is interposed, the tendency of which is to force the cylinder G in a downward direction.
K designates a chain, rope, or the like, the lower end of which is made fast to the crossbar I of the cylinder G. Said rope or chain y i extends upward through. the pump-tubing,
through an opening at the upper end of the latter, and is made fast to the pump-frame L, only a portion of which is shown in the drawings. The operating lever or handle M, which is pivoted to the said frame, is connected pivotally with thel pump-tubing, so that by it the plunger may be reciprocated vertically, while the interior cylinder, G', remains stationary.
-From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation andadvantages of this device will be readily understood. On the downstroke of the plunger water will enter the lower end of the latter from the outer cylinder, A, through the valve E, the valve H meanwhile acting as acheck-valve. On the upstroke the plunger serves to suck water from the well intocylinder A through valve B, while the water from the lower portion of the plungerchamber passes through valve H into the upper portion of the plunger-chamber and the tubing, whence by repetition of the operation it is expelled at the top ofthe well.
The tlexible arrangement of the cylinder G, through the interposed spring, causes an even and steady iiow to be maintained, this device taking, practically, the place of an air-chamber in a force-pump.
The construction is simple, and the device may be easily and eiiectively operated.
Having thus described my invention, Iclaim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1,'In a pump, the combination, with the cylinder, the vertically-reciprocating plunger having upwardly-extending tubing, and the interior supplemental cylinder having the cross- ICQ opening valves, of a rope or chain connecting the said supplemental cylinder with the stationary pump-frame, and a coiled spring` interposed between the Cross-bar at the upper end ofthe interior supplemental cylinder and the upper end of the plunger-chamber, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
2. The combination, with the plunger consisting, essentially, of-a cylinder having an upwardly-opening valve at its lower end, and provided with the pump-tubing extending` upwardly from its upper end, of the interior supplemental cylinder having an up wardly-opening valve at its lower end and a cross-bar at its upper end, and a spring interposed between said cross-bar and the top of the plungerchamber, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
