SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 378,338, dated February 21. 1888.

To all whom t iii/oy conceive:
Be it known that l, ALFRED D. SHELNUTT, of Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Force-Pumps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the'letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to that class of pumps in which the piston or hollow tube is reciprocated vertically in a cylinder, and through which the water rises, and is operated by a lever having its fulcrum in a rod or bar secured to theplatform; andthe objects of my improvenient are to form a water-elevator of few and simple parts, yet combining astrong, durable, and easy means of raising water, and byso arranging the parts that I secure asingle-acting pump without resorting to the old method of suction. As the cylinder is placed on the ground in the well and is opened at the top, the water in the well will thereby keep the cylinder always iilled; and it further consists in certain details of construction and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and specifically pointed out :in the claims. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings,

In the drawings, A represents the cylinder, formed of any suitable metal, and when in operation is set or placed in the bottoni of the well. The cylinder, being open at the top, is adapted to be secured by bolts cr otherwise to the guide I3. rlhrongh the opening in the guide B is a hollow tube, C, to the lower end of which is secured a flat circular solid casting, D, having a screw-threaded central opening,by which means the tube is secured thereto,
andwhicli is provided with a suitable number of openings, d d, for the purpose of allowing the water to pass through when the piston is raised. In the under surface of the piston is secured a piece of leather, E, forming a cupsliaped bearingsurface, and liavingthe portions fitting over the holes d partially cut away to formvalves or covers e e, to close the openings when the tube and its connecting parts are forced down. The upper portion of the hollow tube is screw-threaded, by which means it is secured to a circular plate, F, to which is secured by bolts or otherwise the chamber G at the top of the hollow tube C, and secured in the chamber G is a check-valve, g, the object of which will be hereinafter described. To the upper portion of the chamber G is suitably secured a tube, H, preferably screwed into the chamber. Io the upper portion of said tube, and above the platform, is an ovalshaped water-ch amber, I, to which are secured the lugs or ears il i, between which is pivoted the operating-lever, having its fulcrum in bars L, their lower portion being secured to the platform in such a manner that it will allow the upper port-ion to have a swaying movement. To one side of the tube H, I secure an ordinary exit pipe or spout, M.
The operation is as follows: The leverK being raised, it will raise all its connecting partsi. c., the parts I H O l-I and the casting or piston head D-and when the said parts are raised the valves d d. will be forced open to allow the water to flow in the cylinder between the casting and the bottom of the cylinder, and at the same time the check-valve g will close and prevent the water in the tube H falling back. After the lever is raised to a suflcient height it will then be forced down, and as it is so operated the water in the tube C and cylinder will force the check-valve to open, and at the same time close the valves or openings d d, thus forcing the water upward and out of the spout M.
The means I employ are simple and elective and can be Operated with case, and at the same time afford an immense now of water. The several parts can be cast, so that when they become worn or broken they can be easily replaced and with but little cost.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is Y 1. The herein-described pump, consisting, essentially, in the combinationy of a cylinder having an open top, an upwardly-extending guide secured to the top edge of said cylinder and provided with a central opening, a tube working through said guide, a flat casting or piston-head carried by the lower end of said tube and operating in the cylinder and provided with openings, downwardly-swinging valves to close said openings against upward pressure, a plate or casting removably secured around the upper end of said tube, a downwardly-closing valve to close the upper end of the same, a hollow casting secured upon the upper surface of said plate to form a checkvalve chamber, an upper tube screwed into the upper end of said hollow casting, a waterchamber upon the upper end of the upper tube, a spout in the tube below said chamber, and a pivoted operating-lever, substantially as described.
2. In combination, a cylinder having an open top, a guide carried by said cylinder,an upwardly-extending tube working in said guide, a iiat solid piston-head having a central opening, in which the lower end of said tube is secured and provided with inlet ports or apertures, packing attached to the under side of said piston-head and extending downward from the lower edges of the same to tightly t the cylinder below the piston-head and form a cup` shaped bearing-surface, valves or covers to close said inlet-ports in the piston-head against upward pressure and .being formed by cutting away portions of the packing upon the lower side of the piston-head, a check-valve to close the upper end of said tube, a plate and casting to form a checlrvalve chamber at the upper end of said tube, an upper tube secured in said chamber, and an operating-lever, substantially as described. p
