Description

(No Model.)
W. QUINLAN.
TAP FOR BOOTS OR SHOES.
No. 315,068. Patented Apr. 7, 1885.
i d n UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM QUINLAN, OF OSVVEGO, NEWV YORK.
TAP FOR BOOTS OR SHOES.
SZBOIFIECATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 315,068, dated April 7, 1885.
Application filed January 16, 1585. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM QUINLAN, of Oswego, in the county of Oswego, inthe State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Taps for Boots and Shoes, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
In said drawings, Figure 1 is an isometric detached view of my improved tap, and Fig. 2 is a transverse section showing the said tap attached to a rubber shoe.
This invention is specially designed for the repairs of rubber boots or shoes; and it c011- sists of a disk or disks, at, of rubber or leather, or other elastic and suitable material, which disk is of a width to reach across the bottom and beyond the edges of the sole or shank or heel to be repaired, and has integral with it marginal beveled flanges b b, by which to cement it to the edges of the parts to whichthe tap is to be applied. lhe manner of applying the described tap to the heel of a rubber shoe is illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
It will be observed that by my invention the bottom of a rubber boot or shoe can be repaired in an expeditious and neat manner. The entrance of dirt behind the flanges is ef fectually prevented, and the tap is most securely retained in position, and, furthermore, the bottom of the boot or shoe receives a broader wearing-surface than that of the origi nal sole or shank or heel.
I do not claim, broadly, a boot or shoe tap provided with marginal flanges, as I am aware the same has been formed of metal.
'I am also aware that rubber boots and shoes have been made with the sole turned up over the upper around the whole boot or shoe, forming a protector for the upper; but it is obvious that neither of said devices is adapted to accomplish the object of my invention as hereinbefore specified.
That I claim as my invention is- As a new article of merchandise, taps for repairs of rubber boots or shoes, consisting of disks of elastic material reaching across the bottom and beyond the edges of the sole or shank or heel, and having integral with it marginal flanges by which to cement said taps to the edges of the parts to be repaired, sub stantially as described and shown.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name and affixed my sea in the presence of two attesting witnesses, at Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, this 7th day of January, 1885.
