The present invention is related to lock key cutting devices and is more particularly concerned with a portable device for cutting keys from tubular blanks.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a portable device of a simplified and economically producible structure which can be held in the hands of a user for producing cuts in a key blank after the device has been set from a completed or master key, and which device will firmly hold the master key during the setting and then the key to be completed during the cutting operation.
Further objects of the invention will be in part obvious and in part pointed out in the following description of the accompanying drawing, in which FIG. 1 is an exploded perspective View of the present combination of elements comprising the invention.
FIG. 2 is a top view of the present device without a key mounted thereon.
FIG. 3 is a cross-sectional View taken on line 3 3 of FIG. 2, but with a key mounted thereon.
FIG. 4 is a lateral cross-sectional view taken on line 4-4 of FIG. 3.
FIG. 5 is a perspective View of a completed or master barrel key for use with the present device.
And FIG. 6 is a similar perspective View of a barrel key blank to be completed by the present device.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawing in which like and corresponding parts are designated by similar reference characters, numeral 1 indicates an annular support having a flat top and bottom faces 1a and 1b respectively. Said support has a threaded bore 2 extending therethrough from said top to said bottom face. A tube 3 has a threaded end 4 in threaded engagement with said suppo-rt bore 2 and an axial bore 5.
A rod 6 slideably extends through bore 5 and has a threaded end 7 extending above face 1a and in threaded engagement with the threaded bore 9 of nut 8. The opposite end of rod 6 has a lateral nger 10 ixedly connected and extending normal thereto with a raised free end projection 11. A coil spring 10a encircles rod 6 between tube 3 and finger 10.
Said support 1 further has a central bore 12 extending therethrough with a restricted medial portion 13. A screw 14 is mounted in said bore 12 and restricted portion 13 Whose head is larger than restricted portion 13.
A cylindrical grooved locater 15 has a threaded recessed extension 16 seated in central bore 12 with screw 14 in threaded engagement therewith retaining said locater on and normal to face 1b of said support. Said locater has a series of peripheral longitudinal grooves 17 formed therein.
Support 1 also has a bore 18 parallel to bores 4 and 12, extending therethrough from face 1a to face 1b and alongside of bore 12. A tube 19 is slideably positioned in bore 13 and has a head 20 and axial bore 21. A coil spring 22 encircles tube 19 between head 20 and support 1 tending to withdraw tube 19 from bore 18.
Support 1 has a side threaded bore 23 extending from the periphery of said support to bore 18. A screw 24 having head 25, is in threaded engagement with bore 23 and extends in said bore to tube 19 for at times retaining said tube in desired positions.
Support face 1b has an annular series of numerals 26 provided thereon with each numeral radially opposite one of the grooves 17 in locater 15.

A guage rod 27 having a knurled head 28, is slideably insertable in bore 21 of tube 19 as shown in dotted lines in FIG. 3.
Alternating with rod 27 in tube 19 is a cutter 29 having slightly spiralled cutting flutes 30. Flat end chuck or socket 31 has cutter 29 inserted therein and retained by set screw 32 engaging said cutter. Chuck 31 in turn is connected to handle 33 by pins 34 extending through said handle and a portion (not shown) of said chuck inserted therein. A cross-bar 35 extends laterally through said handle for aiding in turning the same about its axis.
For use in setting the present device a conventional completed or master barrel key as shown in FIG. 5 is used and which consists of flat head 36 and a tubular end 37 iixedly connected to said head. Tubular end 37 has an internal rib 3S and external rib 39 both provided by an extension 36a of head 36 extending through said tubular end 37. A series of grooves 40 are provided in and around the periphery of said tubular end 3'7 with each groove being of a dilferent length as measured longitudinally from the at mouth of said tubular end.
FIG. 6 shows the barrel key blank to he worked on to provide a duplicate of the master key of FIG. 5 and includes a similar flat head 41 and tubular end 42 with extension 41a of said head providing internal rib 43 and external rib 44 similar to ribs 38 and 39 respectively of said master key.
To set the present device to form a duplicate key, master key 36 as shown in FIG. 3 is mounted on locater 15 by inserting rib 38 in the one of said grooves 17 opposite numeral 1 on said support until face 1b is contacted. Projection 11 of linger 10 is then placed on the end of head 36 and nut 8 rotated drawing rod 6 therein compressing spring 10a and pulling projection 11 against head 36 firmly retaining said master key on the locater 15.
Screw 25 is rotated away from tube 19 to allow the free movement of said tube. Guage rod 27 is then inserted into tube 19 until head 28 is seated on head 20 and then said guage rod is pushed in moving tube 19 therewith until the free end of said guage rod extends completely in the one of said grooves 40 of said master key :alongside bore 18. Screw 24 is then tightened against tube 19 xing the same in its resulting position in said support and guage rod 27 is then withdrawn from tube 19.
Nut 8 is rotated letting spring 10a move projection 11 from key head 36 whereupon the master key is withdrawn from locater 15. The key blank of FIG. 6 is then mounted by inserting rib 43 in the one of said grooves 17 opposite numeral 1 on said face 1b. Nut 8 is tightened drawing projection 11 against head 41 retaining the key blank on said support.
Cutter 29 is then inserted in tube 19 and given a rotation with flutes 30 biting into tubular end 42 of said key blank cutting a groove such as groove 45 therein. This cutting is continued until the Iflat end of chuck 31 abuts head 20 of tube 19 at which time groove 45 will be of the same length as the corresponding groove 40 on the master key.
Cutter 29 is then withdrawn from tube 19, nut 8 loosened releasing finger 10 from head 41 and the key removed from locater 15.
The foregoing steps are repeated only with master key and key blank positioned in turn on locator 15 opposite the remaining numbers 2 to 7 on face 1b or such of them as there are grooves 40 corresponding thereto and until the key blank has grooves 45 therearound corresponding to the grooves 40 on the master key.
It is to be appreciated that the length of guage rod 27 exclusive of head 28 is the same as the exposed length of cutter 29. As an example only the length of both can be 11/s inches. Also the location of bore 2 relative to locator 15 is such that projection 11 engages the medial portion of heads 36 and 4l and the location of bore 1S relative to said locater is such that the tubular ends 37 and 42 extend a distance equal to their thickness over said bore 18 so that guage rod 27 slideably extends into grooves 40 and cutter utes 30 bites a corresponding distance into tubular end 42 to form grooves 45.
The present device is capable of considerable modification and such changes thereto as come within the scope of the appended claims are deemed a part of the invention.
I claim:
1. A portable device for producing duplicate keys from barrel type completed keys each having a corresponding internal rib comprising in combination a support having at opposite faces, a longitudinally grooved locater extending from one of said faces capable of receiving a barrel type key with its internal rib in one of the grooves of said locater, said support having an opening therethrough adjacent said locator means for detachably retaining a key on said locater, a tube slideably extending into said support opening from the other face of said support, means for at times retaining said tube in given positions relative to said support, a guage rod detachably insertable through said tube for engaging a groove of a barrel type completed key on said locater and positioning said tube for being retained therein by said retaining means and a cutter of the same length as said guage rod detachably insertable through said tube, when said guage rod is removed therefrom, for cutting a groove in barrel type key blank on said locater, corresponding to said completed key groove. A device for producing duplicate keys as claimed in claim 1 wherein said key retaining means comprises a second tube xedly extending through and from said support, a rod slideably positioned through said tube and having a threaded end, a nut in threaded engagement with said rod threaded end externally of said tube, a finger xedly connected to and extending laterally from the other end of said rod and capable of engaging the end of a head of a key on said locater and resilient means positioned between said tube and said nger tending to move said rod from said tube.
3. A device for producing duplicate keys as claimed in claim 1 wherein said tube retaining means comprises a threaded bore in said support extending laterally of and to said tube and a screw in threaded engagement within said support threaded bore and capable of engaging said tube for retaining the same against sliding.
4. A device for producing duplicate keys as claimed in claim 1 wherein said one of said support faces has indicia thereon extending in a series around said locater with each indicia positioned radially of one of said locater grooves.
5. A device for producing duplicate keys as claimed in claim 1 wherein said slideable tube is positioned parallel to said locater and with the periphery of said locater overlapping the periphery of said tube for positioning a barrel type key on said locater extending partially over the bore of said tube.

Claims (1)

1. A PORTABLE DEVICE FOR PRODUCING DUPLICATE KEYS FROM BARREL TYPE COMPLETED KEYS EACH HAVING A CORRESPONDING INTERNAL RIB COMPRISING IN COMBINATION A SUPPORT HAVING FLAT OPPOSITE FACES, A LONGITUDINALLY GROOVED LOCATER EXTENDING FROM ONE OF SAID FACES CAPABLE OF RECEIVING A BARREL TYPE KEY WITH ITS INTERNAL RIB IN ONE OF THE GROOVES OF SAID LOCATER, SAID SUPPORT HAVING AN OPENING THERETHROUGH ADJACENT SAID LOCATOR MEANS FOR DETACHABLY RETAINING A KEY ON SAID LOCATER, A TUBE SLIDEABLY EXTENDING INTO SAID SUPPORT OPENING FROM THE OTHER FACE OF SAID SUPPORT, MEANS FOR AT TIMES RETAINING SAID TUBE IN GIVEN POSITIONS RELATIVE TO SAID SUPPORT, A GUAGE ROD DETACHABLY INSERTABLE THROUGH SAID TUBE FOR ENGAGING A GROOVE OF A BARREL TYPE COMPLETED KEY ON SAID LOCATER AND POSITIONING SAID TUBE FOR BEING RETAINED THEREIN BY SAID RETAINING MEANS AND A CUTTER OF THE SAME LENGTH AS SAID GUAGE ROD DETACHABLY INSERTABLE THROUGH SAID TUBE, WHEN SAID GUAGE ROD IS REMOVED THEREFROM, FOR CUTTING A GROOVE IN BARREL TYPE KEY BLANK ON SAID LOCATER, CORRESPONDING TO SAID COMPLETED KEY GROOVE.
