B. KOTKOVSKY. MACHINE FOR CUTTING KEY BITS. APPLICATION FILED AUG. 1, 19 10.

IBENJAMEN KorKovsKfz, or PARIS, FRANCE.
MACHINE FOR CUTTING KEY-BITS.
To all whom, z't may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMEN Korkov- SKY, a subject of the Emperor of Russia, and resident of Paris, France, have invented cer- 5 tain new and useful Improvements in Ma- Cit chines for Cutting Key-Bits, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a machine for cutting key bits and more particularly those of keys for safety looks.
The machine is constructed so that any number of keys can be cut simultaneously after the same pattern.
In the accompanying drawings the improved machine is shown by way of example.
Figure l is a plan view of the machine. Fig. 2 is a vertical. section taken partly through the axis of the machine. Fig. 3 is a side view of the cutters in the radial positions shown in plan in Fig. 1. Fig. 4; shows a key bit corresponding to the cutters (Fig. 3). Fig. 5 is a plan view of the toothed disk. Fig. 6.,shows in side elevation and in plan view the nut for holding the lower ends of the uncut keys. Fig. 7 shows in plan view and in side elevation the sleeve with hooks for gripping the bows of the keys.
The machine comprises the cylindrical frame a with the horizontal table I) and a horizontal flange 0 which serves for fixing the cylindrical frame upon a convenient support by means of screws, rivets, or the like. In the center of the cylindrical frame a the vertical shaft (Z is mounted which carries at its lower end the driving pulley e. The upper part of said vertical shaft CZ which proj sets from the table 5 has two threaded parts f and g of different diameter. Upon the part f a nut 7b is screwed (Fig. 6) which has notches 2' designed to receive the lower end of the uncut key. These notches can either be circular as i or with parallel sides as a, Fig. 6, according to the shape of the key to be out. There are as many notches as keys are to be cut simultaneously; in the example shown four notches are provided. The keys to be cut are mounted in. said notches of the nut 72. so that they stand parallel with the central shaft (Z and they are maintained in their position by means of a sleeve 70 (Fig. 7) which is mounted upon the upper end of the central shaft cl so that it can be adjusted in vertical direction according to the height of the keys and that it is further free to be turned on said shaft. This sleeve 70 has as Specification of Letters Patent.

many hooks m projecting from its periphery as there are notches in the nut 71.. Said hooks m are made to grip the bows of the keys by slightly turning the sleeve 72 on the shaft d. The sleeve is secured in its position by means of a locking nut n screwed upon the upper threaded part 9 of the shaft. The four keys are thus securely fixed to the central shaft (Z so that they turn with the same if said shaft is made to revolve.
The table I) has a certain number of radial slots 0 (eight in the example shown) which serve for guiding the slides p. The slides 22 form racks on their lower surfaces and mesh with the upper toothed surface of a disk (1 (Fig. 5). This disk 9 can revolve around the central shaft (Z and it is driven by a bevel wheel 1" keyed upon a horizontal shaft 8. This horizontal shaft receives its motion from a crank handle not shown in the drawing. By turning said handle in a certain direction the disk 9 is made to revolve in the same direction and causes by means of its spiral-shaped toothed crown the slides 79 to move simultaneously toward or away from the central shaft d. In the slides 79 the tool supports t are mounted so that they can be adjusted in said slides. With this object in view a screw-spindle a having a hand wheel 2; at its outer end, is located in the slide 10 so that it can freely turn in its bearings. The tool support t is screwed upon the front end of said screw spindle so that it goes forward or backward according to the direction in which said screw spindle is being turned. Each tool support t carries a vertical screw bolt w, parallel with the central shaft d upon which the circular saw as or any other cutting tool is mounted. The distance between the cutting tool m and the table 6 is regulated by means of the washer y. The cutting tool an is secured in its position by means of a nut a screwed upon the upper end of the screw bolt w.
It is easy to understand that the position of the cutting tools a: above the table Z) can be regulated according to the height at which the incision in the key bit has to be made and that their position with regard to the central shaft 6, can be regulated accord ing to the depth of the incision to be made. After the position of all the cutting tools has been regulated by the adjustment of the various cutters to the pattern key held in the workholder the slides 22 are withdrawn from the central shaft and moved back.
After the keys to be out have been mounted in the machine in the manner hereinbefore described, the driving pulley e is put in gear so that all the keys turn around with the central shaft. The horizontal shaft 8 is hereupon turned by hand so that all the cutting tools a" move toward the central 7 shaft. Each of the cutting tools will thus make an incision in the bits of all the keys and exactly at the same place and of exactly the same depth.
Fig. 3 shows by way of example the different positions of the circular saws a: for cutting the key bit in the manner shown in Fig. 4:. It is obvious that if only one of the Washers is replaced by a washer of different height or if only one of the hand wheels is slightly turned the key bit is completely modified so that by means of this improved machine an almost unlimited number of key patterns can be easily obtained.
The hand wheels 0 are preferably graduated in order to facilitate the adjustment of the tool supports.
The use of circular saws as cutting tools is very practical as these saws out only with one tooth so that if this tooth is worn off it can be quickly and easily replaced by another tooth of the circular saw.
I claim An improved machine for cutting key bits comprising in combination a cylindrical frame having a certain number of radial slots in the top plate, a vertical shaft revolubly mounted in the center of said cylin drical frame, means for revolving said shaft, a threaded part of said shaft projecting from said frame, a nut screwed upon said threaded part and having radial notches in its periphery designed to receive the lower ends of the keys, a sleeve adjustablymounted upon the upper end of said central shaft, radial hookshaped arms of said sleeve designed to grip the bows of the keys, a threaded part at the upper end of said central shaft and a locking nut screwed upon said threaded part and locking the sleeve in its position, slides movably mounted in said radial slots of the frame, means for simultaneously adjusting by hand all the slides in their guide slots, the tool supports adjustably mounted in said slides, means for regulating the radial distance of the tool supports from said central shaft and a circular saw on each of said supports, substantially as described and for the purposcf'l set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto setmy hand in the presence of two witnesses. BENJAMEN KOTKOVSKY.
