SLED.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 314,837, dated March 31, 1885.
Application filed January 29, 1885. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM HASLUP, a resident of Sidney, in the county of Shelby and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sleds, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the construction of sleds the runners of which are made of T iron or steel. I
The object of my invention is to provide simple, light, and strong supporting devices for connecting the various parts of the sled together, whereby a cheap and strong struct ure is obtained, all of which will be fully set forth in the description. of the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my invention; Fig. 2,a side elevation of the same; Fig. 3, a top plan View; Fig. 4, a detail view of the fore end of the runner.
A represents the runners,whioh are formed of T iron or steel. The web a is notched out between the points 1 and 2, Fig. 4, and the T portion bent down to rest upon the end of the flange 3, so as to form a firm brace-lap.
B represents standards,preferably made with forks b at the lower end.
0 represents a knee or flange at the upper end.
0 represents a similar standard, with the knee or flange 0 turned in the reverse direction.
The standards B G are riveted at their lower ends to the web a of the runner, and at their upper ends are riveted or bolted to the cross-beams D, which unite the two runners A A.
E represents a roller connecting the two runners at their front end, to which the thills or tongue are attached in the ordinary manner.
In order to brace and support the standards B G longitudinally, I have provided the following instrumentalities:
G H represent two girders, which are riveted at their front ends upon each side of the web a, and the central portions are riveted to the standards B C. The rear ends are bent downward and riveted to the web of the rear end of the runners. These girders, together with the bent runners, form a very strong brace or truss support.
The standards B O and the girders G H diverge from each other, as shown,which braces the runners laterally, so' that in turning the sled the side strains "are resisted by the spreading knee-braces B 0, and by the girders G H.
It is sometimes desirable to have the runners A A flare or spread outward at their bottom. This can be accomplished bymaking the inner brace, B, longer than the outer brace, C.
The two principal features of my improvement are the knee-standards B 0, connecting the beams D with the runners A, and the girders G H, either of which can be employed independently of the other, but when combined form a very strong braced structure.
I, Fig. 2, represent-s a connecting-rail,whicl1 is rigidly connected to the beams D and to the terminal ends of the runners A. This rail may be used for the longitudinal connection of the beams and runners, and the girders G H be omitted, and employ some of the features of the invention herein specified. It
can also be made of the same contour as the;
girders G H and serve as a guard-rail.
Having described my invention, what I claim is 1. The runners A, formed of T iron or steel, having web a notched and bent down to overlap the web 3, to form the terminus of the bent runner, substantially as herein specified.
2. In combination with the T-runners A and beams D, the standards B G, united at their lower ends to the web a of the runner, and at their upper ends to the beams D, substantially as described.
3. In combination with the runners A and beams D, the standards B 0, provided with the forks b b at the lower end and bent flange c at the upper end, substantially as herein specified.
4. In combination with the runners A, beams D, and their supporting-standards, the girders GH, riveted to the web of the runners at their front and rear ends, substantially as herein specified.
5. In combination with the runners A. the I In testimony whereof I have hereunto set girders G H and diverging standards B C, my hand. rigidly connected together, substantially as herein specified.
