APPARATUS FOR MANUFACTURING LAMP-=ESLACK.
EiBPECIlE'lCATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 814,706, dated 31, 1885.
Application tum June 19, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I,PETER NEFEOT Gambier, 'in the county of Knox and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements 1 5 Volving the table, and stationary burners beneath. and so arranged that the flames will impinge against and deposit the lamp black on the under side of the table, and stationary scrapers of the ordinary construction and arrangement for removing the lamp-black at a given point and discharging it into suitable receptacles. A further object is to provide a centralchimney, and a hood and damper c011- nected therewith, by means-of which the escaping gases and smoke may be controlled and conducted, if necessary, to condensing chambers ,or apparatus. A further object is to provide gearing attached to the chimney by means ot'which the turn-table may be revolved.
A further object is to support the turn-table by means of a spindle and central column, and to guide the table by adjustable lateral wheels,
secured to the chimney and traveling around the central column.
5 \Vith these objects in view my invention consists in certain features of construction and in combination of parts hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is 40 a plan View of my improved machine with a portion of the table broken away to show the burners and pipes below. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same with the table and chimney in section. Fig. 3 is an enlarged elevation, partly in section,of a portion of the supporting mechanism. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section ofthe supporting-column, chimney, and bracket-arms, and a plan view of the lateral wheels.
Arepresentslargebracket-armswith flanges a, to which are attached the metal plates B, forming the table proper, and the flanges a,
i that are secured to the chimney C. The upper portion, A, of the arms are flat and are secured to the arms of the bevel-gear D. This gear has a pendent circular flange, d, that fits preferably on the inside of the chimney and is secured thereto by rivets or bolts. The edges of the plates 13 abut against each other about midway under the arms A, and are secured to the flanges a by bolts having countersunk heads on the under side. The plates may have an upwardly-projecti11g flange, b,
on their inner ends as a means of more firmly securing the chimney, and may have a slight pendentrib, b, on the outer edge. 'The under side of the plates B are slightly concaved in cross-section, and are straight, but-more or less inclined longitudinally, the inner ends beiug the highest, so that the under surface of the table might be called conical.
E is a central supporti ng-oolu1nn with a step or concaved end at e, that receives the end of the spindle G, that is secured centrally'in the hub of the gear D. By this arrangement of parts the entire weight of the turntable is supported by the spindle and may be made to revolve almost frictionless.
H are lateral wheels that travel on the column E and are journaled on the axles 72, So that are pivoted to the lugs 0, projecting inwardly from the chimney 0. These axles are embraced by and supported laterally by the forked ends of the rods I, the outer or screw ends of which pass through the wall of the chimney and are provided on either side of the wall with the nuts 1', and by means of which the table is adjusted and made to revolve true. Underneath the table are placed the series of small tubes J, arranged approxi- 9o mately parallel with each other and with the under surface of the table, and provided with numerous gas-burners, the flames. from which impinge against the under surface of the table. These tubes may be connected with one general supply pipe, J. The tubes may be supported in anysuitable manner-such, for instance, as the cross-pieces K, resting on posts Lbut may be varied according to thejudgment of the builder or the material at hand. If preferred, the large pipe J might be supported at the center by the column E, and the ends of all of the tubes might extend beyond the periphery of the tableand be supported by rods from the building above. M is a bar that'may be supported at the inner end by column E and the outer end by the standard m, and has attached the scrapers a. These scrapers are usually pieces of thin spring-steel secured to the bar M and projecting upward, so that their upper ends come in contact with the under surface of the revolving table and scrape the lamp-black therefrom, that falls by gravity into the trough O and is discharged into any suitable receptacle below.
I make no claim in this specification to the scraper and attachment, as my invention there in has been fully described and claimed by me in a former patent.
R is a hood secured to the gear D, and extends down between the arms thereof and joins the top of the chimney O. This hood terminates above in the pipe R,.providedwith thedamper r, by means of which the draft through the chimney may be regulated. The pipe B may lead to any condensing-chamber or elsewhere, as may be desired.
S is a gear engaging the gearD,and secured to the shaft S, that is provided with the drivin g-pulley S and is jou rnaled in suitable boxes supported by the hangers S In operating the machine, thetable,by means ofthe mechanism already described, is caused to revolve slowly. As aforesaid, the flamesof the burner impinge against the under surface of the table and deposit the lamp-black thereon, and once in every revolution every part of this surface is brought in contact with the scrapers and the lamp-black removed. The process is therefore continuous, and with the construction and arrangement of parts hereinbefore described the machine is operated with a minimum expenditure of power and requires but little labor or attention on the part of the operator.
What I claim is 1. In amachine for the manufacture of lampblack, the combination, with the stationary burners, of a horizontally-rotating table, the under surface of which is more or less conical or concaved, the, said table being .provided with a central'draftbpening, substantially as set forth. t
2. In a machine for the manufacture of lampblack, the combination, with burners and a standard, of a horizontally rotating table mounted on said standard, and a series of rollers connected to the table and bearing against the standard, substantially as set forth.
3. In a machine for the manufacture of lampblack, the combination, with stationary-burners, of a horizontally-rotating table provided with a central chimney, substantially as set forth.
4. In a machine for the manufacture of lampblack, the combination, with a horizontally-rotating table provided with a central chimney and arranged, preferably,as described,of mechanism by means of which the table may be rotated, substantially as set forth.
5. In amachine forthe manufacture of lampblack, the combination, with a horizontally-rotating table and a spindle located above and connected with said table, of a standard on which the spindle rests and moves, andstationary burners located inclose proximity. to i the under surface of the table, substantially as set forth. V
6. The combinatiomwith a horizontallyrotating table provided with a chimney and pivotally supported on a central column, of. .lateral wheels arranged to. engage the said column and journaled on axles pivotally secured to the said table or its attachments, and provided with suitable, mechanism, preferably as described, bymeans of which the relative position of the table and lateral Wheel may be adjusted radially, substantially as set forth.
7. In a machine for the manufacture of lamp; black, the combinatiomwith a horizontally-rotating table provided with a chimney and suitable hood or connections for conducting the escaping gases and smoke from the chimney, of a damper located in the chimney or attachments, and soarranged that the draft through the chimney may be controlled thereby, -sub stantially as set forth. p p In testimony whereof I sign this specification, in the presence of two witnesses, this 31st day, of May, 1884.
