To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, FREDERICK G. HELL` MUTE, of Brooklyn, (Green Po'int,) in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fasteners for Mattings, of which the following is a speciiication.

The object of this invention is to furnish an improved fastening device for mattings, stairxo carpets, the., of such construction that the matting can be quickly andconveniently taken up at anytime, cleaned, and relaid again, and also reversed, so as to be used on the other side.'

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a plan of a piece of matting secured to the floor by my improved fasteners. Fig. 2 is a top View of the floor-socket with the locking-piece partly in section. Fig. 3 is 2o a side view of the locking-piece; Fig. 4. a section through the fastener, and Fig. 5 a bottoni of the fastener.

A in the drawings represents a socket that is preferably made in disk shape and provided With an elongated slot, a, and a bottom rim, b. The socket A is countcrsunk into the iioor. so that it is flush with the saine, and

secured by means of two or more screws, cl d, which are passed through holes d of the socket A. A locking-piece, B, of double-T shape, is passed through a slit of the matting and a washer, e, interposed between each head eof the locking-piece B and the matting; but the washers may be dispensed with. The shank of the locking-piece B is made of such a height as to correspond to the average thickness of the matting. The heads of the locking-piece 4o B are provided with longitudinal nicks for turning the same by means of a screw-driver, pocket-knife, or other device.

When it is desired to lay the matting, the sockets A are screwed down into recesses of the ioor, and the locking-pieces B of the matting then connected to the sockets. This is accomplished by inserting the head e at the under side of the matting into the slot of the socket A and then turning the lockingpiece 5o either by hand or by a screw-driver so that it is placed across the slot of the socket, in which position it rigidly retains the matting on the floor. For detaching the same the locking-piece is turned back into line with the slot of the socket, and the matting then taken up for being cleaned. It is then relaid in the same manner, or after having been reversed so as to expose the other side to wear, in which case the opposite head of the locking-piece serves for locking the matting to the socket in 6c the same manner as before described.

The advantages of my improved fastener are that a neat and reliable connection ot' the matting with the floor are obtained, and the zine strips which have been used heretofore to 6: strengthen the ends of the matting, and which are liable to split and break after the mat has been in use for some time, are dispensed with. By fastening the corners of the matting, they cannot curlV up and cause persons to fall. 7c

The fastener is cheap, strong, and durable, and can be readily detached from one matting after the same has been worn out and attached to a new matting.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. In a matting-fastener, the combination of a plate or socket piece adapted for attachment to the floor and provided with an elon- 8c gated slot, and a double-headed locking-piece whereot` one head is adapted to pass through the matting, t-hc opposite elongated head being adapted to pass through said slot and lock under said socket-piece, substantially as de- 8|: scribed.

2. rlhe combination of aslotted socket having a raised rim at the under side, means to lock the socket flush with the floor, a double- T-shaped locking-piece passed through the 9o matting, the heads of said looking-piece having longitudinal nicks, substantially as set forth.
