Description

July 14, 1964 P. P. CASSIDY BOOK AND MAGAZINE HOLDER Filed Oct. 15, 1962 IIWI United States Patent 3,140,558 BOOK AND MAGAZINE HOLDER Peter P. Cassidy, Perth Amboy, NJ. (121 Lakeshore Drive, Port Arthur, Tex.) Filed Oct. 15, 1962, Ser. No. 230,451 2 Claims. (Cl. 45-85) My invention is directed toward book and magazine holders.
It is an object of my invention to provide a new and improved holder for books, magazines and the like.
Another object is to provide a new and improved holder of the character indicated which can be easily assembled and taken apart.
Still another object is to provide a new and improved holder of the character indicated which can be easily manufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages will become apparent when this specification is studied together with the accompanying drawings wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a front elevation view of my invention;
FIGURES 2 and 3 show slightly difierent forms of the page holding elements of FIGURE 1 in rear perspective;
FIGURE 4 is a cross section through 44 of FIG- URE 1;
FIGURE 5 is a detail view showing how two of the parts of FIGURE 1 fit together; and
FIGURE 6 is another detail view of another of the parts of FIGURE 1.
Referring now to the figures, a first horizontally extending elongated member 10 rests on a suitable surface 11 such as a table and is provided with a bottom horizontally extending shallow trough 12. A bolt 14 secures member 10 at its midpoint to an inclined second elongated member 16 extending perpendicularly away from member 10. The top of member 16 has a curved slide element 18 slidably engaging the bottom straight portion 19 of an inclined third elongated member 20. Members 16 and 20 have slots 22. When these members are slid to the desired relative position, they are held securely in position by means of manually operated screw assembly 24.
The top portion 26 of member 20 is bent toward the vertical and also has a slot 27. A vertical support member 28 has its top end 30 in contact with portion 26 and at its bottom end 32 is bolted to a right angled element 34 resting on surface 11.
A second horizontally extending member 36 is secured at its midpoint to portion 26 and top end 30 by another bolt 34. Member 36 has right hand and left hand horizontal slots 38, each of which carries an adjustable positioned page holding element 40.
ice
Each element 40 has a finger 42 to hold the page of a book or magazine in position, finger 42 depending downward from a horizontal support 44 horizontally rotatable about a spring biased rod 46.
Typically all of the members can be formed from 7 inch aluminum fiat sheet.
When a book is placed in open position on the structure, the lower portion of the book rests on or in trough 12 and the open oppositely facing pages are held at the top by fingers 42 of elements 40.
While I have described my invention with particular reference to the drawings, my protection is to be limited only by the terms of the claims which follow.
I claim as follows:
1. A holder for books, magazines and the like, comprising a horizontally disposed trough for supporting the bottom of the printed matter to be held, a horizontal member spaced vertically from the trough, means connected to the horizontal member at each end for releasably holding the pages of the printed matter being supported, a first vertical member connected at one end to the trough, a second vertical member connected to the horizontal member, the first and second vertical members being slidably connected to one another for connecting the trough and horizontal member and for varying the space therebetween, means for releasably holding the first and second vertical members immovable relative to one another to maintain the space between the trough and hori zontal member, said horizontal member being movable to the second vertical member toward and away from the trough, a vertical support member connected to the end of the second vertical member to which the horizontal member is connected, the end of the second vertical member being movable along the support member, and means for releasably connecting the horizontal member and the support member to the end of the second vertical member.
2. The holder in accordance with claim 1 wherein the means connected to the horizontal member at each end is comprised of a pair of elements each slidable on the horizontal member and having a spring biased pivotal arm for engaging pages to be held.
