V. E. HIGHER.
TOY. No. 318,952, Patented Mar. 1'7, 1885.
- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VIGTOR E. HIGHER, OF WEST MEDFORDfASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO ROBERT B. C. BEMENT, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
TOY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 313,952, dated March 17, 1885.
Application filed September 10, 18:4. (No model To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, VIoToR E. HIGHER, of Boston, county of Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Toys, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
My invention consists, essentially, in a toy composed of a figure, guide-rods on which it may be moved, and a spring-actuated platform, the depression and release of which causes the figure to be thrown from the platform in the direction of the length of the guide-rods; and to add to the interest of the toy I have provided it with means whereby 'the platform receives adiagonal movement and strikes the figure in such manner as to cause it to turn over one or more times as it descends.
Figure 1, in elevation, represents a toy embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 a righthand side View thereof.
The bottom piece, A, has attached to it a loop-like guide B B, provided with stops 2. The figure c, of any usual shape or material, preferably of india-rubber, is pivoted on a cross-rod having loops 0, said loops embracing the guide-rods and sliding thereon,as will be described. The guide-rods, at a short distance above the bottom piece,A, are provided at opposite points with inclines 4, at the upper ends of which normally stands the platform p, which is kept elevated by a spiral spring, d, placed on the rod diattached to the under side of the said platforn1,the said spring being located between the said bottom piece and platform. The rod has a projection, d
which may be graspedto lower the platform and compress the spring, and when the rod is 0 released the spring quickly throws the platform upward so that it strikes the feet of and throws or shoots the figure upward away from the platform. As the platform in its upward movement rides over the inclined parts 4. of 5 the guide-rods it is thrown to the right, (see Fig. 2,) thus giving the figure a diagonal blow, which, as the said figure is thrown away from the platform, causes it to rotate or turn somersaults. The distance to which the figure may be thrown is regulated by the stops 2. The figure is free to rotate on the crossbar extended through it near its shoulders.
To direct the platform in proper line,l have provided it with two spring-arms,h, having eyes 3, which embrace the guide-rods.
I claim 1. In a toy, the guide-rods, the figure, and eyes 0, combined with the platform and spring to throw the figure, substantially as described.
2. The guide-rods provided with the inclined portions. 4, and the spring-actuated platform, combined with a pivoted figure having connected loops or eyes to slide on the guide'rods, the platform striking the figure a diagonal blow and turning the figure on its pivotal center, substantially as described.
In testimony whereofl have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two sub- 7o scribing witnesses.
VICTOR E. RICHER.
