Description

June 9, 1964 J. c. HIGGINS 3,135,966
BABY MITT Filed May 15, 1963 INVENTOR. JAMES C. HIGGINS (0% .2". M w} W United States Patent 3,135,966 BABY MITT James C. Higgins, 18 Shaker Drive, Loudonville, N.Y.,
assignor 0f forty-five percent to Walter F. Wessendorf, Jr., Guilderland, N .Y.
Filed May 15, 1963, Ser. No. 281,386 1 Claim. (Cl. 2-158) This invention relates to a mitt to be used to facilitate dressing of an infant.
The problem in the art of dressing an infant arises from the infant squirming, fussing and especially grabbing hold of the insides of sleeves when one attempts to put the arms of the infant through the sleeves of the garment. Once the infant grabs hold of the insides of the sleeves, the infant in most cases refuses to let go of the sleeves.
This invention solves the problem in this art by providing a baby mitt to place over each of the infants hands thereby allowing the arms of the infant to be placed through the sleeves of the garment and preventing at the same time the infant from grabbing hold of the insides of the sleeves of the garment.
These and other objects of the invention should be appreciated from the detailed specification taken in conjunction with the drawing.
This application is a continuation-in-part of my application entitled Baby Mitt, Serial No. 208,327, filed July 9, 1962, since abandoned.
Reference numeral 1 generally refers to the baby mitt made of one piece of suitable plastic material such that same will not bind or snag on the inside sleeve of the garment with which same is to facilitate the dressing of the infant particularly when the arms of the infant are to be placed through the sleeves of the garment. In this connection, any type of thermoplastic is suitable as the choice of material.
The baby mitt 1 has a main body portion 3 configured similarly to the shape of an infants hand and a wrist closure portion 5 open at one end to permit the infants hand to be inserted within the baby mitt.
Between the main body portion 3 and the wrist closure portion 5 the plastic material is suitably gathered or pleated at 7 to form thereby an elastic portion which will fit snugly on the infants wrist after insertion of his hand therein to thereby prevent self-removal of the mitt by the infant.
It should be appreciated that the elastic portion at the wrist portion of the baby mitt is formed by gathering or pleating the material suitably and thereafter welding together the portions as thusly gathered or pleated together by application of heat for forming gatherings from only the thermoplastic material. And in this connection, it should be clearly understood that the pleats are welded to produce the gatherings without aid from anything such as a band or stitching. The number of places along the Wrist portion where the material is to be gathered or pleated will of course depend upon the amount of material that is gathered or pleated to form the elastic portion.
Each hand of the infant is placed within each one of the mitts utilized in such a manner that the hands of the infant are covered by the main body portions of the mitts and the elastic portions of the mitts fit snugly on the infants wrists.
The mitts thusly emplaced over the hands of the infant will prevent the infant from grabbing hold of the insides of the sleeves of the garment with which the infant is being dressed.
Having thusly described my invention, I claim:
As an article of manufacture, a baby mitt made of one piece of thermopalstic material and such that same will not bind or snag on the inside sleeve of the garment with which the infant is being dressed, said baby mitt comprising a main body portion, a wrist closure portion, and an elastic portion formed only from said thermoplastic material; said main body portion being configured substantially to the shape of the infants hand, said wrist closure portion depending from said main body portion and being open at one end to permit thereby insertion of the infants hand within said main body portion of said baby mitt, said elastic portion, being arranged and disposed between said main body portion and said wrist closure portion said elastic portion being the thermoplastic material thereat gathered or pleated and welded together, said elastic portion fitting snugly on the infants wrist.
