WATCH OASE. No. 313,360. Patented Mar. 3, 1885.
U'Nrrnn STATES PATENT @ricrea DANIEL OHARA, OF WTALTHAM, MASSACHUSETTS.
WATCH-CASE.
BPECIFICATEON farming part of Letters Patent No. 313,360, dated March 3, 1885.
Application filed June 7, 1884. '(No model.)
'To all whom, it 77mg/ concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL OHana, of Valtham, in the county ot' Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vatch-Cases, ot' which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention, in substance, consists of a band or ring to contain the movement arranged therein, in the usual or any othersuitable manner, which band is made in one piece with the annulus or central shell or body, and either of the same or of different metals, or ot' other suitable material, and either by both being made of one piece or ot' separate pieces permanently secured together, and said central shell is left open at either its back or its front side, and the open side closed, and the ring made with risers at its front and back sides, extericrly adapted for the attachment of other parts ofthe case.
This invention, in substance, also consists ot' a ring or band to contain the movement, arranged therein in the usual or in any other suitable manner, whichband is made in one piece with the central annulus or shell, and either ot' the same or oi' different metals or of other suitable material, and either by both being made of one piece or of separate pieces permanently secured together, and said central shell is left open at either its back or its front side, and the open side closed by a separate piece suitably attached for removal at pleasure, and the ring made with risers at its front and back sides, exteriorly adapted for the attachment ot' other parts ot the case.
The figures of the accompanying plate of drawings, forming a part ot' this specification, illustrate the present invention, and they are all on a similarly enlarged scale.
Figure l is in part a central transverse section and in part an edge view of a watch-case with the movement removed. Figs. 2 to 8, both inclusive, and Fig. l0 are sectional views at one side only ot' a watch-case, and they are all in illustration of the construction ofthe central shell or annulus and movement ring or band in accordance with the lirst part ot' this invention, as heretofore stated; and Fig. 9 is a sectional view at one side only ot' watch-case in illustration ofthe construction of the central shell or annulus and movement ring or band in accordance with the second part ot' this invention, as heretofore stated.
In the drawings, A is the band or ring to contain the watch movement. :Eis the central shell, or annulus or body. C is the front bezel-ring, and D its crystal. E is t-he back bezel-ring, and F its crystal. G is the front cap or plate. H is the baclrcap or plate.
The movement band or ring A interiorly is adapted in any of the usual ways or in any other suitable way for receiving and securing` the watch-movement. (Not represented in the drawings.) This ring A exteriorly is sur rounded by the central shell or body, preferably made with a recess or chamber, J; butit may be made solid, or nearly so, using` a base or inferior metal-such as albata, nichel, brass, or other metal or material-forthe inner and unexposed portions thereof, and for its exposed sides or surfaces silver, gold, or other precious metal orsuitable material. The central shellor annulus. B, and movement-ring A are either made ot' one )ieee of metal or ot' other suitable material, or ot separate pieces ofthe same metal or ot' ditt'erent metals ormaterials secured together by solder or otherwise in any suitable manner, and all so that the same together shall constitute in fact one piece ofthe case, which, combined with the other parts for the attachment ot' which said shell and ring are adapted. as hereinafter described, will secure the complete watch-case desired.
K and L are risers-one, K, at the front side, a, and the other, L, at the back side, b, ofthe central shell or body. Each of the risers is exteriorly adapted-the riser K at the front side for the attachment ota front bezel-ring, Figs. l to l0, both inclusive, and the riser L at the back side for the attachment of a back bezel-ring, E, Fig. 4, or for the attachment of a back cap or plate, H, Figs. 2 and 3, and Figs. 5 to l0, both inclusive, and for this attachment of said parts, as particularly shown in all the figures except Fig. S, a screw-thread, d, is formed exteriorly about the riser for the part it is to receive to be screwed upon it, and, as shown in Fig. S, the riser exterior-ly is left plain and smooth for the front bezel-ring to be snapped over or upon it, instead of being screwed upon it, asshown in the other tigures.
In Figs. 1 to 4, both inclusive, and Figs. 6
IOO
to 9, both inclusive, the back side, f, ot' the central shell is left open. and, except in Fi", 3, such open side closed by a separate. rirg piece or plate, M. which is suitably attached lor removal at pleasure.
ln Fig. 3 the open sidef ot'the central shell is closed by the back cap or plate, and no separate ring, M, is shown, and in Fig. 5 the central slnll or body is continuous t'rom the t'ront side to the back side ol' the ring.
The attachment otl said removable ring M, above referred to, maybe made in various ways-as, for instance, by screwing it over 'and upon the exterior ot' the riser L, bel'ore referred to, at the back side ot' the central shell or body, B, or rather movement-ring A.. Figs. 4 and 7, or over and upon a separate riser at the back side ot' the movennnt-ring A, Figs. (i and 9, or by screwing it into and upon the interior ot' the outer part or edge otn the central shell, Fig. 2, or by simply locatingl or setting it within the central shell, shoul` dei-ed, as at g, Figs. 1 and S, to make a suitable rest therefor, and thus shoulderiug may be combined with the said adaptation either ot' the central shell or body, or ot' the movement-band, for screwing the said separate ring into place; and this separate and detachable ring M may be l'ormed so as to constitute of itself a crystal bezel-ring, E, Fig. 6, or be constructed, as shown in Fig. 9, to wholly close the movement-ring A at its back side, and in such ease, it' a back cap or plate, H, is desired, said ring M is also provided with a riser, N, exteriorly constructed tor the attachment thereof-as, t'or instance. by making it with a screw-thread. rlhis separate ring M may be adapted to be snapped into place, and thus attached the sameas bezel-rings and capplates ot" watch-cases are now commonly attached, or to be otherwise fastened in place. and the same may be said ot' the l'ront bezel-ring, the back bezel-ring, and the front and back caps or plates, either or all ot' which may be hinged to their proper riser.
ln Figs. 6 to 9, both inclusive, the cap or plate is shown as located at the front side ot" the central shell or annulus, the shell having a suitable riser, P, t'or receiving it, and the attachment ot' said plate or cap may be secured by snapping or screwing it over and upon said riser, or by liinging it, all as well known, hinging being preferable for obvious reasons.
W'ith the central shell or annnlus madehollow or chambered, as at J, and left open at one side, asshown in Figs. 1 to 4, both incitisive, and Figs. 6 to 9, both inclusive, and such Open side closed` as stated, and with this chamber ot' suitable shape, an opportunity is ait'orded for the insertion therein and removal therel'rom ot' a case spring` or springs l'or operating upon either the front or back. or both the t'ront and back, plates, as well known in hunting-\\ateh cases.
The right is hereby reserved to protect by separate Letters Patent the construction, substantially as herein described, ot' a ring, M, closing the open side ot' a central shell or body, B.\\ith a riser, N, l'or the attachment of other parts ot' the ease.
lleretot'ore the central shell or body and mtwement-ring ot a watch-case have been made in one piece. and the shell constructed t'or the attachmentot' other parts ol' the caseas, t'or illustration, see Letters Patent ot' the United States issued to me, dated Hay 13, 1854. No. 298,615. ln the present invention, however, it is the movement-ring and not the shell which is constructed lor the attachment ot other parts ofthe case, and, in view ot' the Letters Patent referred to, this` invention is to be construed as strictly limited to a combined shell and movementsring having the movement-ring constructed, substantially as described, l'or the attachment ot' other parts ot' the ease.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. ln a watch-ease, a movement band or ring, A. and a central shell, B, constituting one piece, let't open at one side, and the ring A, made with risers K L, through which to attach other parts ot' the case, substantially as described, for the purpose specilied.
2. ln a atcb-case, a movement baud or ring, A, and a central shell, B, constituting one piece, left open at one side, closed by a separate plate, M, and the ring A, made with risers K L, through which to attach other parts ot' the case, substantially as described, for the purpose specilied.
In testimony whereof l have hereunto set my hand in the presence ot' two subscribing EDWIN W. BROWN, WM. S. BELLoWs.
