Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.,
FREDERICK E. SCHMIDT, OF NEV YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN STEAM-G EN ERATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 31,329, dated February 5, 1861.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FREDERIOH E. SCHMIDT, of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Apparatus for Generating Steam or Vapor from a Fluid, or from a Fluid and Gases Combined; and I hereby declare that the lfollowing is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure I represents a front view, and Fig. II a plan, and Fig. III Aa longitudinal side view, of my improvement.
The nature of this invention consists in the arrangement and combination of boilers or generators and tanks, dto., in such a manner as to be able to feed the boilers or generators when necessary, or to mix the steam or vapors with air or gases under all pressures in the generator.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents an oven, upon which a generator, B, is fastened, above which a second generator, B', is placed, connected with the generatorB by means of the hole and coupling D, Fig. I. The generator B is in such a manner fastened on the oven A that the heat of the fire will act equally on the bottom of saidV generator B, and passes then through the pipe C into the flue E in the middle of the generator B and then into the chimney.
F is a tank provided with three cocks, l, 2, andA 3, of which cock l is for the purpose of exhausting therefrom the vapors or gases and to admit atmosphere. Cock 2 connects said tank, through the pipe G, with the generator B, which said pipe, after having entered the generator, runs the whole length of said generator near its bottom, and is provided with holes on its upper side for the equal distribution of the fluid or gases through the generator. Cock 3 is through the pipe IfI and cock 4E with the reservoir R, connected. The top of the tank F is connected, through the pipe P and cock 5, with the top of the generator B. The cocks 6 and '7, on the top of the generator B', conduct the generated steam, vapor, or gases to the engine. The cock S, on the front end of the generator B, is for the purpose of retaining the fluid in said generator always at a required height, and serves at the same time for the purpose of cleaning the same. Cock 10, on the reservoir R, connects the same, through the pipe L, with the pump K.
M is a receiving-vessel, connected, through the pipe N, with the suction-valve in the bottom of the pump K.
O O are safety-valves on the top of the reservoir R and the generator B.
Q Q are frames which carry the shaft V W and support the lfeed-pump K, which latter is worked in the usual manner from the shaft V, which receives its motion from the shaft W, through the belt T, passing over the pulleys U U', and is operated through the belt-shifter X. The shaft W receives n10- tion from the engine through the pulley U. Vhen the generator B is filled about onequarter full with any iiuid, heated steam or gases will be generated therein, which, through the cocks 6 and 7, will escape to the engine and act there upon a piston or its equivalent.
If an increase of power is desired, the feedpump KA is put inr operation, and any fluid or other substance which may have been put in the receiving-vessel M is pumped into the reservoir R to any desired pressure.
Vhen desired to mix the contents of the reservoir R, or any part thereof, with the fluid and vapor in the generators B and B', the cocks 2 and 5 are shut and the cock l is opened, whereby the tank F is filled with atmospheric pressure, when the cock l is shut again. The cocks 3 and 4 are then opened, when this tank F will be filled from the contents of the reservoir R. The cock 3 is then shut, and the cock 2 and then the cock 5 opened, whereby the contents of the tank F will be forced into the generators B and B throughthe pipe G and equally distributed throughout the same, when Vthe cocks 2 and 5 are again shut, and the same operation repeated as often as desired.
I do not wish to confine myself to the exact shape and construction of the generator, as the same may be varied; nor do I claim any part separate and by itself; but
Vhat I elailn as my invention, and desire said combined vapors and gases exert a Conto secure by Letters Patent, is tinual power upon a piston or its equiva- The arrangement and combination of the lent. generators, tank, and reservoir, substantially FREDERICH E. SCHMIDT. as described, for the purpose of combining Vitnesses: with the steam or vapor generated in the MORITZ AHL, generators any other fluid or gases when J. P. SETZER.
