Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OPFIOE.
JOHN PORTER, OF JEFFERSON, TEXAS.
STEAM-BOILER.
Specicaton of Letters Patent No. 31,620, dated March 5, 1861.
To all whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN PORTER, of Jefferson, in the county of Marion and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Steam-Boilers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a longitudinal vertical section of a boiler with my improvement. Fig. 2 1s a transverse vertical section of the saine in the plane indicated by the line 0c, in Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section of the same, through the upper flues. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal vertical section of the lire-box detached.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
My invention consists in a detachable firebox constructed and applied in combination with the body of the boiler in the manner hereinafter described whereby I obtain a portable boiler which may be made of large capacity, is easily set, is little liable to get out of repair, and is a very eiective steamgenerator. 4
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A` represents the body of the boiler made separate from the lire-box, like an ordinary horizontal cylinder boiler. It may have any arrangement of iiues that may be desired, though represented with two lower horizontal iiues a, a, and three upper horizontal lues b, b, b.
B O O D E, is the detachable fire box made entirely of boiler plate and double, so that it contains a water space in every part. The lower part, which contains the grate Gr, is of quadrangular form in its horizontal section. The front B, is lupright and so is the part D, which constitutes the nre-bridge, and both these parts are hollowed vout for the reception of the body A, of the boiler which rests directly upon the part B, and upon raised bearings c, c, so provided on or behind the part D, as to admit of the escape of the products of combustion under the rear portion of the body. The sides C, C, which extend upward to within a short distance of the level of the top of the body A, are curved as shown in Figs. 2 and 4, to correspond with the body of the boiler, and leave spaces cl, CZ, see Fig. 2, between them and the body. From the part D, the part E, extends in the form of an inverted arc under the body of the boiler to the rear end thereof, the sides of the said part E, corresponding in form, and forming a continuation of the upper parts of the sides C, C, and the space CZ, (Z, c, between it and the sides and bottom of the body being sutlicient for the circulation of the products of combustion. The part E, may however be omitted, and the fire-box terminate at D, in which case the place of E, will have to be supplied by the setting ofthe boiler.
Then the part E, is used the only setting absolutely necessary will be at the extreme rear of the boiler to form a smoke chamber or breeching F, establishing communication from the space el, (l, c, to the lues a, a, as the lower and front part of the tire-box may rest upon the ground or upon a floor or deck. The space CZ, d, is covered at the top with plates f, f, dropped on to suitable resting places provided on the lire-box and boiler, and the whole or a portion of the upper part of the boiler above these plates may be covered with brickwork or any non-conducting material. The connection between the flues a, a, and o, b, is made in front of the boiler by a breeching I, in the usual manner, and the fines b, are connected in rear with the chimney J, by a breeching K. The water space of the fire-box is connected with the body of the boiler by a pipe L, arranged outside and in front, as shown in Fig. l, or in any other suitable manner. The feed pipe g, is connected with the rear end of the fire box, and a blow-ofi' pipe 7L, is attached to the bottom of the part D, which is extended a little below any other part of the fire-box to form a sediment well out of the circulation.
The iire-box constructed, as described and represented, with the part E, extending to the rear of the boiler, will be of about the same weight as the body of the boiler, so that in the transportation of the boiler the body may be conveyed on one wagon, and the lire-box on another. In two ordinary cotton wagons a boiler of this kind, of from fifteen to twenty horse power, may be conveyed into the woods without difficulty, while a boiler 'of the same capacity of any What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The detachable re-box, constructed of the form, and applied in combination With l5 the body of the boiler, substantially as herein described.
JOHN PORTER.
