Description
- 2 Sh (-811 t c. GODFREY. e88
Domestic Boileri No. 30,917. I 'Patented 0420.18. 1860.
NITED STATES CORNELIUS GODFREY, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOILERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 30,917, dated December 18, 1860.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, CORNELIUS GODFREY, of the city of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improved Arrangement of Furnaces and Boilers; and I do hereby declare that the following specification is a full and exact description, which may be fully understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, forming apart of this specification.
Figure l is a vertical sectionalviewthrough the middle of boiler, furnace, and appurtenances. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view through the boiler and furnaces. Fig. 3 is a top view of the foundation or bed-plate.
AA are two heads with flanges B B B B connected with the outside shell 0, thereby forming the boiler D.
E E E are furnaces connected to the two heads A A.
F F are flues passing through the boiler.
G G are ovens attached to the boiler and furnace.
H H are flues connecting with fiues F F.
I I are two heads with flanges J J J J connected to outside shell K K, and forming the steam-reservoir L.
M is a fine through the reservoir connecting with flues H H, and terminating in a smoke pipe or chimney.
N is a stand-pipe with flange 0 connecting the steam-reservoir with the boiler.
P is a cover resting on the shell of the boiler.
Q is a space or flue between the boiler and cover, and connecting the furnaces E with flues Fand H.
R R are the grate-bars in the furnace E.
S is a movable cover for. the hole or opening T in cover P over the furnace E.
U U U are divisions forming the ash-pits V V V under the furnaces E, and supporting the boiler.
X X X are dampers in flues H H for diverting the draft around the ovens as may be required.
Having described the construction of my invention, I will now proceed to show its usefulness and novel application.
First, for domestic purposes: After filling the boiler with water in any ordinary manner, and before a fire is made, the dampers X X are closed and the damper X is opened, giving a direct draft from the furnace E through fiues Q, H, and M into the smokepipe or chimney. After the fire is well started damper X is closed and damper X is opened, whereby the draft is diverted through the fines F F and H H under and between the ovens G G, thereby heating them sufficiently for the various culinary purposes required. The cover S over the furnace E may be removed and the various kitchen utensils inserted, as may be required. At the same time, as steam is generated in the boiler D it ascends into the reservoir L, whence it may be used for cooking or heating purposes.
Secondly. This invention is also very useful as a galley-stove for ships use, as it will not only answer all culinary purposes, but, by the aid of proper machinery, the steam can be used for pumping, hoisting cargo, working the Windlass or capstan, and many other purposes.
Thirdly. This invention is useful to the farmer and agriculturist, for the driving an engine, forcing Water, thrashing, sawing, churning, and many other purposes.
Fourthly. This invention is useful to the manufacturer and mechanic, as the steam can be used for a motive power, and the furnace or furnaces for melting metals, and the oven or ovens for drying cores, or other purposes.
Now, I do not claim a boiler for generating steam, nor a furnace or furnaces for melting metals, nor an oven orovens for drying cores, or cooking, or any of the separate parts of the above-described improvement; but
What I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The arrangement of boiler and furnace or furnaces with the steamchamber, as described, and for the purposes as set forth.
CORN. GODFREY.
