SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 313.268, dated March 3, 1885.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, PHILLIP WEINRERG, LoUIs CLARK, J r. and EGBERT WINKLER, all of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Seal-Skin Sacque, Dolman, and Ulster Blocks, of which the following is afull, clear, and exact description.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of one of my improved blocks, illustrating its use. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view of the same, taken through the line or 00, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is 2. diagram of a sacque-front formed and cut upon my improved block. Fig. 4 is a diagram of a sacque-front formed and cutin the ordinary manner.

The object of this invention is to facilitat the forming and cutting of seal-skin sacques, dolmans, and ulsters, and economize labor in such forming and cutting.

The invention consists in a seal skin sacque, dolman, and ulster block made of two boards secured to each other at an angle at their forward edges and recessed at their angle and at the rear edge of the front board.

The invention further consists in the mode of cutting out seal-skin sacques, dolmans, and ulsters by fitting and tacking the skins, when wet, to a block and cutting them out,

when dry, to a pattern applied to them while on the block, as will be hereinafter fully described.

A B are two boards, the forward edges of which meet at an angle and are secured to each other. The upper and lower ends of the boards A B are attached to the end boards, 0, the lower one of which serves as a foot to support the block in an upright position. The part of the forward edge of the boards A B that receives the waist of the garment is cut away or recessed to bring it to such a shape as will give the required form to the waist of the garment. The rear edge of the board B is also recessed, and the outer side of the said board can be shaved down. The rear edge of the board B from its recess downward is inclined outward to give the required fullness to the skirt. The rear edge of the board B above its recess is extended to the rearward to form a support for the shoulder of the garment.

In using the block the skin is wet till it becomes soft. Then the edge of the skin that will form the side seam of the garment is folded in over the rear edge of the board B, and is tacked to the inner side of the said board, as shown in Fig. 2 and indicated by the dotted line D in Fig. 1. The skin is then drawn smoothly over the rear edge of the board B, and is worked into the recess of the said edge,and is drawn over the angular forward edge of the block,and is worked smoothly into the recess of the said edge, and its edge is tacked to the outer side of the board A, as shown in Fig. 2 and indicated by the dotted line E in Fig. 1. As the skin is being smoothed out upon and fitted to the block A B, its upper and lower edges are tacked to the said block. The block A B, with the skin attached to it, is set aside for the skin to dry and set to the form. Then the skin is fully dried, a pattern is laid over the skin, and the skin is cut to the pattern; or the outline of the pattern is drawn upon the skin, and the skin is then cut to the mark. A single dart, F, is then cut in the skin and its edges are sewed to each other.

By my improvement the forming of one of the two darts G H and the under-the-arm scam I are avoided, so that the labor in making the garment will be greatly lessened and a bettershaped garment will be produced.

The block shown in the drawings is for the left-hand front of the garment, and a similar block must be used for forming the right-hand front. 9

Having thus described our invention, what, we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A seal-skin sacque, dolman and ulster block made substantially as herein shown and described, and consisting of the boards AB, secured to each other at an angle at their forward edges and recessed at their angle and at the rear edge of the board B, as set forth.
